Eevee has eight recognized evolutions, each with a different type. The commonly described methods are elemental stones for Vaporeon, Jolteon, and Flareon; friendship combined with time of day for Espeon and Umbreon; special locations for Leafeon and Glaceon in games that use them; and friendship plus a Fairy-type move for Sylveon. The exact method available can vary by game, so treat these as franchise-wide reference rules rather than a walkthrough for every Pokémon title.
If you are asking how to evolve Eevee into a particular form, first identify the form and its type, then match it to its trigger category. The quick reference below distinguishes the eight outcomes and the extra conditions that matter. For exact item sources, locations, friendship requirements, or timing rules, check the instructions for the specific game you are playing.

All eight Eeveelutions: types and commonly described methods
Eevee is a Normal-type Pokémon. Pokémon’s official Pokédex lists eight evolved forms, each with its own type. The table summarizes the commonly described evolution triggers; it does not establish that every trigger is available in every game.

Pokémon’s official Eevee feature describes these familiar methods, while its RPG explainer notes that leveling and Evolution items are among the series’ common evolution mechanisms. Neither reference is a complete compatibility chart for every release. Before following a location or timing instruction, check the rules for the particular game you are playing.

The table is useful as a first decision, not as a promise that a particular step will work in every title. It tells you what kind of trigger to investigate: a stone, friendship and time, a special location, or a combination of friendship and a move. It does not say where an item can be obtained, how a particular game measures friendship, or which releases implement a given location method.
How the evolution methods differ
Stone evolutions: Vaporeon, Jolteon, and Flareon
The three stone evolutions use distinct item-to-form pairings: Water Stone to Vaporeon, Thunder Stone to Jolteon, and Fire Stone to Flareon. The trigger is using the corresponding stone on Eevee, not leveling up near a landmark or meeting a friendship-and-time condition. If you are playing a specific title, use its own item name and instructions; the broad reference method does not tell you where a stone can be found or whether it is available at a particular point in that game.
The easiest way to keep these three straight is to treat the stone as the selector. The target type and the item name correspond directly in the official overview: Water produces the Water-type form, Thunder the Electric-type form, and Fire the Fire-type form. A stone method is therefore a different kind of decision from the friendship evolutions: the key question is which item to use, rather than when Eevee levels up or what move it knows.
That distinction is helpful when comparing choices, but it should not be stretched into an unsupported claim about item availability. The overview supplies the pairing, not an inventory route, shop, price, or point in the game when a stone becomes obtainable. If you need a practical walkthrough, look for one that names your exact title and identifies the item source and the steps required there.
Friendship and time of day: Espeon and Umbreon
Espeon and Umbreon share the same broad requirement: Eevee needs high friendship and must level up. The in-game time at that level-up separates the two outcomes in the commonly described method. Day points to Espeon; night points to Umbreon. “Day” and “night” refer to the game’s conditions, not necessarily the time displayed on a real-world clock. Different games may represent or handle time differently, so check the title’s own rules before relying on the condition.
For this pair, friendship and timing are both part of the description. Meeting the friendship condition does not, by itself, tell you which of the two forms the method will produce; the day-or-night condition supplies that distinction. Likewise, the time condition is not a replacement for high friendship. When checking a game-specific guide, make sure it explains both the friendship requirement and the relevant in-game time condition.

The official overview calls for high friendship but does not give a numerical threshold or a universal way to measure it. It also does not define a single clock system for every Pokémon title. That means a general reference can identify the factors to check, but it cannot responsibly tell you an exact friendship value, a menu path, or a real-world schedule that works across the franchise.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteLocation-based evolutions: Leafeon and Glaceon
The classic location explanation ties Leafeon to leveling up near a Moss Rock and Glaceon to leveling up near an Ice Rock. These are not universal travel instructions: a game must use that location mechanic for it to apply. The general reference does not identify every game that includes the rocks, give their locations, or establish what alternative methods later games may offer. Do not assume that a particular map landmark or a nearby area with the right terrain is sufficient; verify the method and exact location for your game.
These two forms are the location-based pair in the familiar summary, but their triggers are not simply “be near grass” or “be somewhere cold.” The named landmarks matter in games that use the Moss Rock and Ice Rock method. A description of the broad mechanic does not establish that a rock appears in the title you have, or that the same location is used in another release.
If a guide tells you where to go for Leafeon or Glaceon, check that it names the same game you are playing. A useful game-specific explanation should identify the relevant rock and clarify that Eevee must level up near it. Without those specifics, the general rule is only a pointer to the kind of method, not a route you can follow on a map.
Friendship, plus a Fairy-type move: Sylveon
Sylveon’s commonly described condition combines two requirements at the level-up: Eevee must have high friendship and know at least one Fairy-type move. The move is an additional condition, not a substitute for friendship. Conversely, high friendship alone does not cover the move requirement in this method. The official overview does not specify a friendship threshold, which move to teach, or the steps for learning one; those details depend on the game’s own systems.

This is the only method in the overview that explicitly pairs friendship with a move condition. Keep both parts in view when you check a game-specific guide: a Fairy-type move alone is not the whole condition, and the friendship condition remains relevant. The phrase “at least one” also means the overview does not call for a specific named move or multiple Fairy-type moves; it establishes the type of move required, while the game determines the available moves and how Eevee learns them.

Because the guide does not name a move or explain how to teach it, avoid assuming that one learning route works everywhere. Check the title’s move-learning rules as well as its evolution rules. A reliable walkthrough should state the exact game and tell you how to confirm that Eevee knows a Fairy-type move before the level-up.
Compare the eight methods at a glance
There are four useful trigger categories in the broad overview. Three forms use a stone item, two use friendship together with a time condition, two use a special location in games that implement it, and one uses friendship plus a Fairy-type move. This comparison is a quick way to narrow down what to verify; it is not a count of how many titles support each method.
- Stone item: Vaporeon, Jolteon, and Flareon. The stone selects the form: Water Stone, Thunder Stone, or Fire Stone, respectively.
- Friendship and time: Espeon and Umbreon. Both require high friendship and a level-up in the commonly described method; in-game day or night distinguishes the result.
- Special location: Leafeon and Glaceon. The classic method uses a Moss Rock or Ice Rock, respectively, in games with those location mechanics.
- Friendship and move: Sylveon. Eevee needs high friendship and at least one Fairy-type move when it levels up.
The categories also explain why “How do I evolve Eevee?” does not have one answer. If you have a particular outcome in mind, use the corresponding row rather than treating every Eeveelution as a level-up evolution. Some methods are described through an item, while others make the conditions around a level-up central. Within the level-up methods, the extra check differs: time for Espeon and Umbreon, location for the classic Leafeon and Glaceon method, and a Fairy-type move for Sylveon.

Types are the other useful comparison axis. Vaporeon is Water, Jolteon Electric, Flareon Fire, Espeon Psychic, Umbreon Dark, Leafeon Grass, Glaceon Ice, and Sylveon Fairy. Those are the distinct types listed for Eevee’s eight evolved forms in Pokémon’s official Pokédex. The type tells you which form you are looking at; the trigger tells you what evolution mechanic to investigate. Neither list supplies a title-specific route or broader battle advice.
How to choose the right method in your game
Start with the Eeveelution you want, then match its method to the evolution rules actually implemented in your title. The table gives the broad franchise reference; it cannot confirm an item’s availability, a rock’s location, a friendship threshold, or the way a game defines day and night.
- Identify the target form and type. Use the table to confirm the outcome you want before using an Evolution item or preparing a level-up. This first check prevents mixing up the three different stone pairings and helps distinguish the two friendship-and-time outcomes.
- Check the game-specific method. Look up the evolution instructions for that exact Pokémon game. This is especially important for Leafeon and Glaceon, whose familiar Moss Rock and Ice Rock methods apply only in games that use those locations. The same check is useful for every form if you need an exact item source or step-by-step procedure.
- Confirm every condition before triggering evolution. For a stone method, check the item-to-form pairing. For a friendship method, check the friendship and level-up conditions; for Espeon or Umbreon, also check the game’s time condition. For Sylveon, confirm the Fairy-type move as well. For a location method, confirm both that the title uses it and where the relevant landmark is.
- Follow the title’s own prompts and item behavior. The franchise-wide description does not provide a universal menu path, item source, or step-by-step route. Those details must come from the specific game’s instructions. Do not substitute an assumed route from another title.
This approach avoids treating a familiar method as a guarantee. A game-specific guide should name the game and give its exact steps; without that context, the most reliable answer is the broad trigger and the conditions it requires.

For a search or guide you consult, the game name matters as much as the Pokémon name. “Eevee to Glaceon” describes the desired result, but not whether the particular game uses the classic Ice Rock method. “Eevee to Umbreon” identifies the form, but a useful walkthrough still needs to explain how that title handles friendship and in-game night. The same principle applies to the stone forms and Sylveon: the broad pairing or condition is not an item-location guide or move-learning tutorial.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using a stone associated with a different form. Each of the three stone evolutions has its own pairing. Check the table before using an item.
- Assuming high friendship is enough for every friendship evolution. Espeon and Umbreon also use time of day in the commonly described method, while Sylveon additionally requires a Fairy-type move.
- Confusing real-world time with the game’s time condition. The Espeon and Umbreon distinction is stated in terms of in-game day and night. How a specific title determines those conditions is game-dependent.
- Expecting every game to have a Moss Rock or Ice Rock. These are location-based methods for games that use them, not a universal requirement confirmed for every release.
- Assuming the table supplies a complete walkthrough. It does not list item locations, friendship thresholds, move-learning instructions, or all game-specific alternatives. Confirm those particulars in the game you are playing.
- Remembering only one half of Sylveon’s condition. High friendship and a Fairy-type move are both part of the commonly described method. One should not be mistaken for the other.
- Treating a broad rule as a version compatibility list. The overview describes familiar triggers across the franchise, but does not establish which exact releases offer each method or whether a title uses an alternative.
What the official franchise references establish
Pokémon’s official Pokédex lists Eevee and its eight evolved forms with their types. Pokémon’s Eevee feature gives the commonly described stone, friendship-and-time, special-location, and Fairy-move methods. A separate official RPG explainer characterizes Eevee as able to evolve into eight differently typed Pokémon and notes leveling and Evolution items among common evolution mechanisms. Together, these references support a dependable overview of the eight forms, but they do not settle every version-specific step.
That boundary is important. A broad reference can be precise about the form-to-type list and the kinds of trigger associated with each evolution while remaining cautious about implementation details. It does not supply exact friendship values, item prices, item locations, named move-learning instructions, rock coordinates, or a complete list of games. Those details should be checked against the rules for the title in question rather than inferred from a franchise-wide summary.
For a quick memory aid: three forms are linked to stones, two to friendship and time of day, two to special locations in games using those locations, and one to friendship plus a Fairy-type move. The game-specific instructions determine how to carry out the method in a particular release.
Frequently Asked Questions
What type is each Eevee evolution?
Vaporeon is Water, Jolteon is Electric, Flareon is Fire, Espeon is Psychic, Umbreon is Dark, Leafeon is Grass, Glaceon is Ice, and Sylveon is Fairy. Eevee itself is Normal-type.
How do I evolve Eevee into each Eeveelution?
The commonly described methods are: use a Water Stone for Vaporeon, a Thunder Stone for Jolteon, and a Fire Stone for Flareon; level Eevee up with high friendship during the in-game day for Espeon or at night for Umbreon; level up near a Moss Rock for Leafeon or Ice Rock for Glaceon in games using those locations; and level up with high friendship while Eevee knows at least one Fairy-type move for Sylveon. Exact availability and steps can vary by game.

Are Eevee’s evolution methods the same in every Pokémon game?
No universal game-by-game compatibility list is established by these broad reference rules. The stone, friendship, time, location, and move methods are commonly described franchise-wide, but a particular title may handle availability or steps differently. Check a guide for the exact game.
What is the difference between evolving Eevee into Espeon and Umbreon?
Both commonly require high friendship and a level-up. The in-game time condition distinguishes them: day for Espeon and night for Umbreon. Check how your specific game defines day and night.
Does Sylveon need a Fairy-type move or high friendship?
The commonly described method requires both: Eevee must have high friendship and know at least one Fairy-type move when it levels up. A Fairy-type move alone does not replace the friendship condition.
