Dragon Age: The Veilguard does not have one fixed ending: companion and faction outcomes, final-mission assignments, and your decision about Solas combine to shape the result. To improve survival outcomes, finish relevant companion and faction content before the point of no return, the quest “When Plans Align.”
What changes the ending?
The guides consulted describe several interacting outcomes rather than a definitive number of discrete endings. Your choices can affect companion and faction casualties, character-specific epilogue slides, how Solas is dealt with, and whether an optional post-credits scene appears. “Best” depends on what you want: fewer deaths, a particular character’s fate, a preferred Solas resolution, or the secret scene.
- Preparation: companion questlines and Hero of the Veilguard status, faction strength, and suitable assignments in the finale can affect survival outcomes.
- Finale assignments: one sacrifice is unavoidable, while other choices can affect whether later tasks succeed and who survives.
- Solas: the final confrontation offers different methods of binding him to the Veil.
- Post-credits: the secret scene has its own unlock conditions and is not a separate choice in the Solas confrontation.
The ending mechanics below are reported by guides from PowerPyx (October 30, 2024), GameSpot (November 2, 2024), and PC Gamer (November 6, 2024). They are guide-reported mechanics, not a detailed official account from BioWare.
Prepare before “When Plans Align”
“When Plans Align” is the point of no return identified by the guides: after it, only finale tasks remain. Finish the side content you care about before starting it, especially companion personal quests and faction-related work. The guides connect Hero of the Veilguard status, faction strength, and appropriate finale assignments with better survival outcomes.

Build faction strength
GameSpot reports that three stars, or 3,000 points, is maximum faction strength. PowerPyx recommends selling valuables to faction merchants to raise strength; it also describes a wisp merchant in the Crossroads who can support the faction whose city was lost. These are walkthrough strategies, not an official guarantee of a particular outcome.
Consider the Minrathous and Treviso decision
GameSpot recommends saving Minrathous to preserve Shadow Dragon vendor access and reduce the faction-strength penalty described in its guide. Treat this as that guide’s strategy recommendation, not a universal requirement for every ending.

Which companion dies in the forced sacrifice?
During the distraction assignment, you must choose either Harding or Davrin to lead. The selected companion dies during the Ghilan’nain sequence, according to both PowerPyx and GameSpot. If you want to keep one of them alive, assign the other to the distraction team. This is the forced sacrifice; it is separate from casualties that can depend on preparation and later assignments.
What happens to Neve or Bellara?
Later, you choose Neve or Bellara to disable the wards. The chosen companion is captured or temporarily unavailable, but can be rescued later; this choice is not itself a permanent-death decision. The guides emphasize completing the chosen companion’s personal quest and securing Hero of the Veilguard status for their survival.

How do final mission assignments affect casualties?
Use the role hints and prepare the team
In “The Last Gambit,” companion suitability, Hero status, and faction strength influence whether assignments succeed and whether companions or faction allies die. The guides give specific assignments for their recommended routes, but the outcome depends on the people and factions you have prepared. Read the in-game role hints and match companions to tasks where they are suited; do not assume an assignment is safe simply because it advances the mission.
What the ending slides can reflect
GameSpot notes that epilogue slides can reflect choices such as who becomes Minrathous’s archon and where the griffons go. These are consequences of choices made across the game, rather than additional options in the last conversation with Solas.

What are the choices in the final Solas confrontation?
The guides describe three broad routes: fight Solas, trick him, or persuade him to accept redemption. Across these routes, Solas ends bound to the Veil, but the method and surrounding events differ.
Fight or trick Solas
GameSpot describes both a direct fight route and a trick route. Either still results in Solas being bound to the Veil; choose between them based on the kind of confrontation you want rather than expecting one to avoid that outcome.

Persuade Solas with Mythal’s Essence
The redemption option is tied to “Regrets of the Dread Wolf” and obtaining Mythal’s Essence. PC Gamer reports that this makes the dialogue response “You don’t have to do this” available. In this version of the scene, the Inquisitor, Morrigan, and Mythal appeal to Solas. The guides present this as a distinct resolution, not a guarantee that every companion or faction outcome will also be favorable.
How to unlock the secret post-credits scene
The guides identify three Mysterious Circles as a requirement for the secret scene after the credits. PowerPyx also lists completing “Regrets of the Dread Wolf” before “When Plans Align.” The scene is an optional post-credits addition, separate from the main ending branches and the final Solas choice.
Is there one “best” ending?
No single outcome is established as objectively best. If your priority is minimizing avoidable casualties, complete companion quests, build faction strength, and make suitable assignments; the Harding-or-Davrin sacrifice remains unavoidable. If you want Solas’s redemption route, pursue “Regrets of the Dread Wolf” and Mythal’s Essence before the point of no return. If you want the secret post-credits scene, collect the three Mysterious Circles and follow the additional PowerPyx prerequisite. These goals can be pursued together, but they represent different parts of the finale rather than one alternate ending.
BioWare’s release announcement describes the game’s design aim through Creative Director John Epler: “We wanted to give you the choice to really express yourself, and do that in a world full of adventure and danger.” The statement is about the game’s approach to choice, not a specification of its ending mechanics: BioWare’s release announcement.
