Fallout 76 has six numbered vaults tied to its Appalachia setting: Vaults 51, 63, 76, 79, 94, and 96. They range from the player’s starting home to secret government facilities and research sites. Vault-Tec University and the Whitespring bunker are also vault-related locations, but they are separate facilities—not additional numbered vaults.
All six numbered Fallout 76 vaults at a glance
| Vault | Purpose or experiment | How its story reaches the player |
|---|---|---|
| 51 | A computer was tasked with managing residents and selecting an overseer. | Its history is associated with the former Nuclear Winter mode; lore and access through that mode are not the same thing. |
| 63 | A vault with residents whose fate is tied to a storm and the Lost. | The Skyline Valley questline asks players to work with the vault’s leaders and make choices affecting residents. |
| 76 | A control vault intended for its dwellers to emerge and help rebuild society. | The player character begins here; leaving the empty vault is the game’s opening premise. |
| 79 | A secret facility designed to hold the United States gold reserves under Secret Service protection. | Its gold becomes the focus of the Wastelanders heist storyline. |
| 94 | An experiment involving a nonviolent religious community confronted with post-apocalyptic conditions. | Its lore is distinct from its former Vault Raid content, documented in Bethesda’s 2019 Patch 12 notes. |
| 96 | A research vault associated with experiments on mutated fauna. | Its story is encountered through the game’s vault lore; the concise available account does not establish additional chronology. |
What is the story behind each Fallout 76 vault?
Vault 51: a computer chooses the overseer
Vault 51’s experiment placed its residents under the management of a computer system charged with selecting an overseer. The vault is strongly associated with Nuclear Winter, Fallout 76’s former battle-royale mode. That association describes how much of its story was presented; it does not mean the mode remains part of the live game.
Vault 63: residents, the storm, and the Lost
Vault 63’s location and residents came into focus with Skyline Valley, which launched June 12, 2024. Its questline has players work with the vault’s leaders to investigate the storm and the Lost, while choices affect the residents’ fate. It is the vault in this list with a questline centered on those people and events.
Vault 76: the player’s starting home
Vault 76 is a control vault, and it is where the player character’s story begins. Bethesda’s official Fallout 76 overview opens with the player waking to an empty vault and setting out to rebuild society in Appalachia. In its 2018 official reveal, Bethesda described the dwellers emerging “Twenty-five years after the bombs fall” to help rebuild post-nuclear America.

Vault 79: the secret gold reserve
Vault 79 was intended to protect the United States gold reserves, with the Secret Service guarding the facility. The gold-reserve story drives the Wastelanders heist storyline. For the fine-grained order of events, the game’s quests are the appropriate reference; the concise vault summary does not establish a detailed chronology.
Vault 94: a pacifist-community experiment
Vault 94’s experiment centered on a nonviolent religious community facing the conditions of the post-apocalyptic world. Separately, Bethesda’s Patch 12 notes from August 2019 documented the vault as the game’s first instanced Vault Raid, with three rotating missions and Vault Armor-related rewards. Those notes document the raid’s historical design, not whether the raid or its rewards are currently accessible.
Rank #2
Vault 96: research on mutated fauna
Vault 96 is a research vault associated with experiments on mutated fauna. That concise description captures its established role; more detailed chronology or present-day access claims are not established here.
