How Hero Talents work
Hero Talents are self-contained talent trees that build on a character’s class and specialization abilities. Blizzard introduced them with The War Within as an additional way to develop a character’s identity and gameplay. Its stated design goal was to make players “what you are, but more,” according to the World of Warcraft development team’s design overview.
Unlocking and filling a tree
Hero Talents unlock at level 71. Each tree has 11 nodes, including a keystone at the beginning and a capstone at the bottom, with three or four choice nodes along the way. You earn one Hero Talent point per level from 71 through 80, enough to fill the tree by level 80.

Choosing and switching trees
A character activates one Hero Talent tree at a time. Each specialization has two tree options, and players can switch between them in the same way they change class talents. The number of trees differs by class: Blizzard’s roster lists four for Druid, two for Demon Hunter, and three for each of the other 11 classes.

The War Within launched on August 26, 2024, and Hero Talents were introduced as an evergreen progression system. Blizzard’s launch announcement establishes that date and context, but these launch-era materials do not establish the game’s expansion status or current talent tuning as of October 8, 2026.
