Among the fox-inspired Pokémon, the Zorua line makes the strongest overall case: its illusion-centered identity is clear, distinctive, and carried from its Pokédex descriptions into its regional forms. This is an editorial ranking, not an official classification or a measure of battle strength.
There is no official exhaustive “fox Pokémon” roster. For this list, the core group is Vulpix, Ninetales, Zorua, Zoroark, Fennekin, Braixen, Delphox, Nickit, and Thievul. Hisuian Zorua and Hisuian Zoroark are treated as variants of their species rather than separate entries, so the ranking has nine spots.
How the ranking works
The order weighs how readable and distinctive each design is as a fox, how well its concept and lore fit together, the payoff of its evolution line, and its overall character appeal. The criteria are subjective; category labels, types, forms, and Pokédex descriptions below are factual details from official Pokémon sources. This is not a competitive ranking, and no single game or battle ruleset is being judged.
Every fox Pokémon, ranked
-
Zorua
Zorua is the most immediately compelling fox concept in the group. The official Pokédex calls it the “Tricky Fox” Pokémon and says it transforms into people and Pokémon to hide its identity. That gives its small, expressive design a clear personality and makes its foxlike cleverness part of the character rather than just an appearance.

- Beautiful and collectable
- Limited availability
- Size: approx. 7 x 4 x 7 cm.
Hisuian Zorua adds a striking variant: the official Pokémon Legends: Arceus site identifies it as Normal/Ghost and describes its story and illusion behavior. Keeping that form within Zorua’s entry makes the species’ identity feel broader without inflating its place in the ranking.
-
Zoroark
Zoroark earns second place by scaling Zorua’s trickery into a memorable larger-than-life ability. Its official category is “Illusion Fox,” and its Pokédex entry says each can fool a large group simultaneously. The idea feels like a natural evolution of Zorua’s disguises, while the dramatic design gives the line a satisfying payoff.

Hisuian Zoroark is included as a regional form, not a separate ranked species. Official material distinguishes Hisuian forms from their previously discovered forms; the form adds another interpretation of the Zoroark identity without changing the ranking’s counting method.
-
Ninetales
Ninetales is the most iconic classic fox silhouette in this roster: elegant, unmistakably foxlike, and built around its many tails. The official UK Pokédex gives it the category “Fox,” making its connection to the animal unusually direct. It ranks just below the Zorua line because its appeal is strongest as a finished design, while Zorua and Zoroark have a more tightly integrated concept-and-lore hook.

-
Vulpix
Vulpix turns the fox idea into a compact, appealing starting point. Its design is easy to recognize, and its relationship to Ninetales gives the line a satisfying transition from small fox to graceful, many-tailed final form. Vulpix is a strong standalone design, but its greatest strength is how naturally it sets up Ninetales.
-
Fennekin
Fennekin has an appealing fox identity and a clear place in a three-stage line. Its strongest role is as the beginning of that progression: it establishes the fox-like character before Braixen and Delphox take the concept in more theatrical and mystical directions. The official Pokémon TCG: Sun & Moon—Forbidden Light checklist includes Fennekin and its two evolutions, reflecting the line’s distinct three-part structure.

- AUTHENTIC DETAILS: Eevee looks like it jumped right out of the Pokémon Animated Series

-
Braixen
Braixen makes the most focused middle-stage turn in the Fennekin line. Its design develops the fox concept while introducing a more characterful, spellcaster-like direction, so it feels like a real bridge rather than a simple size increase. It lands below Fennekin because the line’s first impression is especially strong, and below Delphox because the final form carries the more complete statement.
-
Delphox
Delphox completes Fennekin’s shift toward a mystical, theatrical character. That evolution gives the line a distinct identity, though it moves farther from a straightforward fox design than Vulpix or Ninetales do. It is a coherent destination for the line, even if its concept is less instantly fox-centered than the entries above it.

-
Nickit
Nickit earns a place through a sly, streetwise take on the fox archetype. Its appeal comes from a different register than the more mystical lines: it reads as a small, crafty character rather than a magical or elegant one. That makes it a useful contrast in a roster otherwise dominated by illusion, folklore, and spectacle.
-
Thievul
Thievul carries Nickit’s crafty theme into a more composed, roguish design. The concept is legible, but it makes a less distinctive impression than the other lines here: it has neither the Zorua line’s illusion-focused lore nor the Vulpix line’s instantly recognizable fox silhouette. It rounds out the core roster, even if it is the least memorable entry for this ranking’s criteria.
Which Pokémon count as fox Pokémon?
“Fox Pokémon” is a practical fan and editorial grouping, not an exhaustive formal Pokédex taxonomy. The defensible core used here covers four lines: Vulpix and Ninetales; Zorua and Zoroark; Fennekin, Braixen, and Delphox; and Nickit and Thievul. Official entries explicitly use fox category labels for Ninetales, Zorua, and Zoroark, while the other inclusions are grouped by their fox-inspired designs and evolution lines.
Hisuian Zorua and Hisuian Zoroark are regional forms of species already on the list. Counting them as separate entries would change the scope and make the comparison inconsistent with how the other lines are counted, so they are discussed alongside their species instead.
What is the best fox Pokémon?
For this ranking, Zorua is the best overall pick because its recognizable fox design, disguise ability, and character concept reinforce one another. If the deciding factor is a classic fox silhouette, Ninetales is the strongest choice; if it is a dramatic evolution payoff, Zoroark stands out. These are design and concept judgments, not claims about which Pokémon performs best in battle.
