Counting the original Game Boy and Game Boy Color, the best Pokémon games on the handhelds are Pokémon Crystal among the role-playing games and Pokémon Trading Card Game among the spin-offs. This ranking covers the principal Game Boy-era RPGs and three notable Game Boy Color spin-offs; it is not a guarantee of every regional release, variant, or special cartridge. The order is an editorial judgment, not an objective score.
What counts as a Game Boy Pokémon game?
Here, “Game Boy” includes both the original Game Boy and Game Boy Color. Regional labels and launch histories do not always line up: The Pokémon Company dates Red and Green to Japan in February 1996, while its chronology dates the US release of Red and Blue to September 1998. Nintendo UK labels Red and Blue as Game Boy games, but lists Yellow, Gold, Silver, and Crystal as Game Boy Color titles. These are regional and catalogue conventions, not a single worldwide launch story. (The Pokémon Company’s chronology; Nintendo UK’s feature)
The RPGs are ranked for their adventures, mechanics, version identity, replay appeal, and approachability today. The card game, pinball game, and puzzle game use different genres, so they are judged on how well each delivers its own kind of play—not against RPG length or world design. Catalogues document the principal games discussed here, but do not establish a definitive worldwide inventory of every variant or special cartridge.
Mainline Pokémon RPGs, ranked
1. Pokémon Crystal
Crystal is the strongest all-around Game Boy Pokémon RPG: it builds on the Johto-and-Kanto adventure of Gold and Silver while giving the paired generation a distinct, later entry. Its most notable documented addition is the choice between male and female Trainers, a first for the games in Nintendo UK’s feature. That option makes starting a new journey feel more personal without changing the basic appeal of exploring, collecting, and battling. (Nintendo UK)
#1 Best Overall
- This renewed game will not come with the original case or manual; cartridge only. It has been cleaned, tested, and is in nice condition.
- The game is an authentic copy and a new save battery has been installed!
It ranks first for refinement and identity rather than because it makes the earlier versions obsolete: Gold and Silver remain the paired starting point for the generation’s major new systems and Pokémon.
2. Pokémon Gold and Silver
Gold and Silver make the most consequential leap in the handheld RPG line represented here. Nintendo says they introduced 100 newly discovered Pokémon and a day/night cycle that changes which Pokémon can be found at different times. The time-based encounters give the world a rhythm that earlier entries lack, while the new roster makes the journey feel like a genuine expansion rather than a small revision. Nintendo dates the Japanese release to November 1999. (Nintendo UK; The Pokémon Company)
Rank #2
- This renewed game will not come with the original case or manual; cartridge only. It has been cleaned, tested, and is in nice condition.
- The game is an authentic copy and a new save battery has been installed!
The pair ranks just below Crystal because Crystal offers a more distinct individual version, but the choice between Gold and Silver is part of their appeal. They are paired releases, not one game that contains every version-specific Pokémon.
3. Pokémon Yellow: Special Pikachu Edition
Yellow gives the original adventure a clear personality twist: Pikachu follows the player during the journey. That companion presence is its defining attraction and makes it an inviting pick for players who want the series’ mascot at the center of the trip. Nintendo UK identifies it as a Game Boy Color title. (Nintendo UK)

Rank #3
- This renewed game will not come with the original case or manual; cartridge only. It has been cleaned, tested, and is in nice condition.
It sits below the Johto games because its strongest distinction is that companion experience, rather than the broader mechanical changes introduced by the later generation.
4. Pokémon Red, Green, and Blue
The original Kanto adventure remains the foundation: choose a starter, travel through the region, challenge Gym Leaders, and build a team. Red and Green began the series in Japan; Red and Blue became the familiar international pair in markets such as the United States. The versions differ in which Pokémon are available, so one copy does not provide the complete collection. Nintendo’s guidance is direct: “to collect every Pokémon, you’ll have to trade with friends.” (The Pokémon Company; Nintendo UK; Nintendo UK’s Blue page)
Rank #4
- This renewed game will not come with the original case or manual; cartridge only. It has been cleaned, tested, and is in nice condition.
- The game is an authentic copy and a new save battery has been installed!
These games rank fourth not for lack of historical importance, but because the later entries add features that make their adventures richer. Their trade-dependent collection is also a meaningful practical consideration for anyone hoping to complete a Pokédex.
Game Boy Color Pokémon spin-offs, ranked
These games are not RPG substitutes. Each offers a different way to spend time with Pokémon, and the ranking reflects the strengths of that format.

1. Pokémon Trading Card Game
The card-battling adaptation earns the top spin-off spot by translating Pokémon collecting and strategy into a different kind of game. Its appeal is planning a deck and thinking through battles, rather than travelling through a region or catching Pokémon in the RPG sense. The Pokémon Company dates its Japanese launch to October 1996; Serebii’s catalogue lists a Game Boy Color release entry, which should not be taken to mean every region used the same platform label or release date. (The Pokémon Company; Serebii’s Game Boy catalogue; Serebii’s Game Boy Color catalogue)
2. Pokémon Pinball
Pokémon Pinball turns the collection theme into a pinball structure. Its strength is a focused arcade-style loop rather than the breadth of an RPG or the tactical choices of the card game. It is a good choice when a quick, score-focused spin-off sounds more appealing than a long adventure. Serebii lists it in its Game Boy Color catalogue. (Serebii)
3. Pokémon Puzzle Challenge
Pokémon Puzzle Challenge is the puzzle-focused entry in this selection. It offers a different kind of test from collecting, battling, or pinball, making it the best fit for readers who want a compact puzzle game with Pokémon branding. It ranks third here because its appeal is naturally narrower than a card battler or an arcade game with a collection hook. Serebii lists it in the Game Boy Color catalogue. (Serebii)

- For Pikachu as a companion: choose Yellow.
- For the original Kanto journey: play Red, Green, or Blue, bearing in mind that completing the collection involves trading.
- For a non-RPG: pick the Trading Card Game for deck strategy, Pinball for arcade play, or Puzzle Challenge for a puzzle-focused game.

A Game Boy Color is one possible way to play original Game Boy releases, and it is also the platform category Nintendo assigns to Gold, Silver, and Crystal. Serebii’s catalogue notes that earlier Game Boy games could be played on Game Boy Color. Check the exact handheld model and cartridge compatibility before buying: regional listings, special releases, and current product condition are not established by these catalogues.
