They cover cup racing, checkpoint eliminations, customizable races, item battles, and open-ended exploration. Local, wireless, LAN, and online play describe how you connect with other players—not additional game modes.
How the five activities differ
| Activity | What you do | Structure | Competitive pressure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grand Prix | Race a cup | Four connected races | Compete across the cup |
| Knockout Tour | Stay above elimination thresholds | Continuous course chain with checkpoints | High; drivers are eliminated at checkpoints |
| VS Race | Race with configurable rules | Settings vary by play setup | Set by the group’s chosen rules |
| Battle | Compete using items | Battle rounds | Focused on battle rules and items |
| Free Roam | Drive and explore | Open-ended | Low; no conventional race or battle is required |
Grand Prix: race a four-course cup
Grand Prix is the structured cup-racing choice. Each cup has four races, and roads between courses are part of the connected race experience rather than a set of unrelated course selections. Choose it when you want a multi-race competition with a defined cup structure. Nintendo’s game information describes the connected world, while its modes overview lists Grand Prix among the available activities.

Knockout Tour: survive checkpoint eliminations
Knockout Tour sends 24 drivers through back-to-back courses, with five checkpoints along the route. At each checkpoint, drivers below the displayed placement threshold are eliminated. It is the most survival-focused option: there is no conventional stop between races, and the field shrinks as the tour continues. Nintendo’s January 21, 2026 announcement of version 1.5.0 describes the format and documents team play.
Team Knockout Tour in version 1.5.0
In local wireless and online play, version 1.5.0 supports two teams of 12, three teams of 8, or four teams of 6. CPUs fill vacant places when there are not enough human players. The winning team is determined by its members’ combined points, based on individual finishing placements. These team formats are update-dependent; the cited rules are those Nintendo announced for version 1.5.0.

- Race from one course to another through interconnected paths that span the world
- Traverse mountains, forests, cities, and more—with shifting weather patterns and a day/night cycle
- Ride on rails, jump off walls, skim across water, and more as you race for the finish line
- Take on the adrenaline-packed Knockout Tour—a fierce 24-driver elimination mode
- Explore courses at your own pace and wander the world to discover fun surprises in Free Roam
VS Race: set up a race for your group
VS Race is the flexible choice when you want to configure a race rather than enter a fixed cup or elimination tour. Nintendo’s multiplayer instructions list options such as class, teams, item rules, CPU difficulty, number of races, and intermission. Which controls are available depends on the play setup, and Nintendo’s update history records changes to VS Race rules. Check the choices shown in your lobby instead of assuming every setting appears in every context. See Nintendo’s multiplayer overview, multiplayer support instructions, and update history.
Battle: compete with items
Battle is the item-focused competitive category, distinct from racing toward a finish line. Nintendo names Balloon Battle and Bob-omb Blast as Battle rule choices. Battle setup can include team count, item settings, number of rounds, and intermission; Bob-omb Blast also has a course-selection option. These are choices within Battle, not separate ways of connecting to other players. Nintendo’s multiplayer support instructions describe the modes and setup.

Free Roam: explore without entering a race
Free Roam is for casual driving and exploring the world rather than joining a conventional race or battle. Nintendo says the map can help you find other players and warp to a course or player. The launch description also mentions hundreds of single-player missions, and online or wireless rooms can place players in Free Roam while they gather or wait. Connection context determines how players join; it is separate from the activity they select. Nintendo describes local play on one system, local wireless across systems without an online connection, online play, and LAN Play over wired connections. Online matchmaking offers Race, Knockout Tour, or Battle, while friends’ rooms and other setups have their own menus and rule availability. Nintendo Australia’s overview and Nintendo Support give the following setup limits:
