The ranking below weighs how broadly each rune helps, how its effect is triggered, and what limits its usefulness. It is a practical recommendation, not an official or measured ranking; your build and play style can change the order.
How Great Runes work
Most Great Runes need three steps before their effects work: restore the rune at its corresponding Divine Tower, equip it at a Site of Grace, then consume a Rune Arc. The effect lasts until you die or switch to a different Great Rune. Having one in your inventory alone does not activate it. GameSpot’s Great Rune guide explains the activation process.

The rankings cover the six conventional combat Great Runes. Rennala’s Great Rune of the Unborn enables rebirth rather than providing a combat buff, so it is discussed separately. The base game also has a Phantom Great Rune associated with multiplayer invasions and Mohg’s Great Rune; it is not a conventional character-stat option. Gamer Guides’ overview lists the base-game runes.
The combat Great Runes, ranked
1. Morgott’s Great Rune — best for general survival
Morgott’s rune increases maximum HP by 25%, according to Gamer Guides; GameSpot describes the increase as about 25%. That substantial health boost is straightforward and useful across many builds, especially when surviving a hit matters more than improving damage or resource pools. It ranks first here for players who want a broadly helpful defensive effect. Restore it at the Divine Tower of East Altus. Gamer Guides; GameSpot.
#1 Best Overall
- Collaborating with George R.R. Martin to create the ELDEN RING mythos has been a genuinely delightful experience and a source of wonderful inspiration. The team is working hard to ensure that the world of ELDEN RING will be a fascinating place for players to explore, filled with peril and wonder from its furthest reaches to its lowest depths. This is a FromSoftware title through and through, rich in fantasy and RPG action. We sincerely hope you look forward to it.
- Building the world of ELDEN RING with Miyazaki-san and his team was a treat! The graphics, mythos, and action-RPG gameplay will deliver an unforgettable experience. I can’t wait for people to see what ELDEN RING has in store for them.” Said George R.R. Martin.
2. Godrick’s Great Rune — best broad boost for developing builds
Godrick’s rune raises all attributes by five. Because it improves a wide range of character stats at once, it can benefit many builds, particularly while your character is still developing and you have not settled into a narrower set of priorities. Its broad coverage makes it a dependable alternative to a specialized buff. Restore it at the Divine Tower of Limgrave. Gamer Guides; GameSpot.
3. Radahn’s Great Rune — a three-resource boost
Radahn’s rune boosts HP, FP, and stamina, covering health, spell or skill use, and actions that consume stamina. The two guides differ on the exact values: GameSpot reports 15% more HP and 12.5% more FP and stamina, while Gamer Guides summarizes the effect as 15% for all three. The practical appeal is the mix of resources, but the precise split should not be treated as settled between these sources. Restore it at the Divine Tower of Caelid. GameSpot; Gamer Guides.
4. Rykard’s Great Rune — best while clearing enemies
Rykard’s rune restores health after you defeat enemies. That makes it useful during stretches of exploration where kills are frequent, but less suited to a fight against a lone boss with no additional enemies to defeat. Restore it at the Divine Tower of West Altus. Gamer Guides; GameSpot.
Rank #3
- Discover where the journey began - Experience the original brutal challenge, completely remade from the ground up. All presented in stunning visual quality with enhanced performance, this is the world of Boletaria as you have never seen it before.
- Become the Slayer of Demons - Venture to the northern kingdom of Boletaria – a once prosperous land of knights, now beset with unspeakable creatures and ravenous demons. Meet strange characters, unhinged and twisted by the world around them, and unravel the unsettling story of Demon’s Souls.
- Face the world’s greatest warriors in ferocious PVP combat - With online invasions adding to the danger of your quest. Or play cooperatively by summoning allies to aid in your fight against the demons. Active PS Plus subscription required for online multiplayer.
5. Malenia’s Great Rune — for aggressive recovery
Malenia’s rune gives you a short window to recover some recently lost health by attacking. It rewards an aggressive response to damage, but Crimson Flask healing is reduced while the rune is active. That trade-off makes it more dependent on how confidently you can keep attacking than the broad stat boosts above it. Restore it at the Isolated Divine Tower. Gamer Guides.

6. Mohg’s Great Rune — a situational, summon-oriented option
Mohg’s rune is tied to its Blessing of Blood effect and summons; it is not a direct, all-purpose solo-stat buff. That dependence makes it less reliable as a default choice for a solo player, though its fit can improve in situations where its summon-related effect is relevant. Restore it at the Divine Tower of East Altus. Gamer Guides.

The Great Rune of the Unborn enables rebirth, allowing you to reallocate your character’s attributes. It does not work like the combat Great Runes: it does not need restoration at a Divine Tower or activation with a Rune Arc. Since its role is changing a build rather than temporarily improving combat stats, it sits outside the ranking. Gamer Guides.
