What is the best Black Ops game? This ranking weighs each of the seven main releases as a complete package: campaign 40%, multiplayer 35%, and Zombies or another third mode 25%. The order is an editorial judgment, not a consensus ranking, and favors a strong campaign and multiplayer without treating the third mode as an afterthought.

Scope: the seven main releases from Call of Duty: Black Ops (2010) through Black Ops 7 (2025). This excludes World at War and Black Ops-branded side or mobile games. Release order and story setting do not line up: for example, Cold War is described as a direct sequel to the original Black Ops, while Black Ops 6 and 7 move the setting into the 1990s and 2035, respectively.

Every main Black Ops game, ranked

  1. Call of Duty: Black Ops II — The strongest all-around balance of campaign ambition, competitive multiplayer identity, and Zombies. Its split-era story gives the campaign a distinctive shape, while the three-mode package feels unusually complete.
  2. Call of Duty: Black Ops (2010) — The series’ defining spy-thriller package, with a focused campaign and the foundation of the modern Black Ops identity. It ranks just below II because its overall package is less ambitious across its modes.
  3. Call of Duty: Black Ops III — A compelling multiplayer-and-Zombies choice, with a campaign structure that makes the whole package less cohesive. Activision’s launch-era description presents campaign, multiplayer, and Zombies as core parts of the game.
  4. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War — A Cold War espionage campaign and familiar round-based Zombies give this entry a clear identity. It lands in the middle because its overall mode combination is less distinctive than the entries above it.
  5. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 — A broad, polished-feeling package on paper, pairing an early-1990s campaign with multiplayer and returning round-based Zombies. It sits lower here because the available official descriptions establish breadth and launch content, not a case for ranking it above the series’ most distinctive packages.
  6. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 — A multiplayer-first entry that replaces a traditional single-player campaign with other modes. That makes it a natural fit for players focused on online competition, but a less complete choice under a ranking that gives campaign the largest share.
  7. Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 — The newest entry, with a solo-or-co-op campaign, multiplayer, and round-based Zombies. The package is broad, but its co-op campaign emphasis makes it a different proposition from the more campaign-led entries; this ranking places it last as an overall fit, not as a claim that every mode is weakest.

Why the ranking weighs all three modes

Black Ops games are not interchangeable campaign sequels. Their packages vary: some are built around a traditional solo story, some emphasize multiplayer, and several make Zombies a major pillar. The weighting here is campaign 40%, multiplayer 35%, and Zombies or another third mode 25%. That gives story-led entries a modest advantage while still giving substantial credit to multiplayer and the third mode.

Official descriptions establish what each game offers, but they do not provide a consistent scorecard comparing all seven. The placements are therefore a transparent editorial assessment rather than a claim of universal agreement. GamesRadar+, for instance, placed the original Black Ops second in its broader Call of Duty all-time list, an example of one publication’s view rather than a series-wide consensus: GamesRadar+’s ranking.

#1 Best Overall

What each Black Ops game offers

1. Call of Duty: Black Ops II

Black Ops II earns the top spot for combining a distinctive campaign concept with a strong multiplayer-and-Zombies identity. It is the pick for someone who wants one game to represent the series’ full range rather than a specialist entry for just one mode.

2. Call of Duty: Black Ops (2010)

The original is the essential starting point for the series’ spy-thriller tone. Its place near the top reflects how clearly it establishes that identity while delivering the complete campaign, multiplayer, and Zombies package that the later games would reinterpret.

Rank #2
Activision Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 & 2 Combo Pack (Xbox 360)
  • An epic campaign and story that takes you to a variety of locations and conflicts all over the world where if you are caught, captured or killed, your country will disavow all knowledge of your existence.
  • Call of Duty's signature multiplayer gameplay returns with new perks and killstreaks, deeper levels of character and weapon customization, and all new modes including:
  • Theater Mode: View, record, and edit your favorite moments form multiplayer, and share with your friends
  • Fan favorite Zombie mode is back providing endless hours of Zombie-slaying entertainment, solo or Co-Op

3. Call of Duty: Black Ops III

Black Ops III is a strong choice for players drawn to multiplayer and Zombies. Activision’s announcement described the three-part package and noted that nearly 100 million registered players had played Black Ops and Black Ops II combined; that was a historical publisher statement in 2015, not a current player count or an independently audited figure: Activision’s Black Ops III announcement.

4. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War

Cold War is explicitly described by Activision as a direct sequel to the original Black Ops, set in the early 1980s. Its campaign, multiplayer, and Zombies give it the expected series breadth, while the setting makes it a useful choice for players interested in the franchise’s espionage side. The sequel relationship is a story connection, not a claim that it follows the original in release order: Activision’s Cold War announcement.

Rank #3

5. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6

Activision lists Black Ops 6 as released October 25, 2024, developed by Treyarch and Raven Software, and available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC storefronts. Its campaign is framed around a clandestine force and the Gulf War; multiplayer launched with 16 maps, and round-based Zombies returned with two launch maps. Those map counts describe launch content, not the current live map pool. Official details: Black Ops 6.

PlayStation describes the story as an early-1990s spy thriller around the Gulf War. That puts it later than Cold War’s early-1980s setting without making release order a guide to story chronology: PlayStation’s Call of Duty overview.

  • Cinematic single player campaign
  • Signature multiplayer
  • Zombies
  • DLC 1 First Strike

6. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

Black Ops 4 is the clearest mode-specialist in this ranking. Its lack of a traditional single-player campaign hurts its score under the stated weighting, but that does not make it a poor choice for a player whose priority is multiplayer and the game’s other modes. Treyarch’s official archive identifies the entry and its place in the series: Treyarch.

7. Call of Duty: Black Ops 7

Black Ops 7 released November 14, 2025, making it the latest released main entry as of October 8, 2026. Activision describes a campaign playable solo or in co-op, multiplayer with 16 launch 6v6 maps and two 20v20 maps, and round-based Zombies. Those multiplayer map figures are launch counts, not a statement of the current selection. The official product page lists PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Game Pass platforms: Black Ops 7.

PlayStation and Activision place Black Ops 7 in 2035 and connect its story to Black Ops 2 and Black Ops 6. Its campaign is a co-op-capable entry rather than a strictly solo proposition, which may make it the better fit for players who want to tackle the story with others. Activision’s June 2025 announcement called the 2024 and 2025 releases the first back-to-back releases within the Black Ops series: “This is the first time we’re staying within the Black Ops series with back-to-back releases,” said Tyler Bahl, Head of Activision Publishing Marketing. Activision’s June 2025 announcement.

Which Black Ops game should you choose?

If you want… Start with… Why
The best overall series package Black Ops II It ranks highest here for balancing campaign, multiplayer, and Zombies.
The clearest introduction to the series’ identity Black Ops (2010) It establishes the spy-thriller tone and provides the core three-mode mix.
Multiplayer and Zombies as the main attraction Black Ops III Its overall package is especially appealing when those modes outweigh campaign.
A Cold War-era espionage story Black Ops Cold War Activision describes it as a direct sequel to the original, set in the early 1980s.
A recent entry with solo or co-op campaign play Black Ops 7 Its campaign supports either approach, alongside multiplayer and round-based Zombies.

Release order and story setting are different

For release order, the seven games are Black Ops (2010), Black Ops II, Black Ops III, Black Ops 4, Black Ops Cold War, Black Ops 6, and Black Ops 7. Their story settings do not simply follow that sequence: Cold War is a direct sequel to the original but set in the early 1980s; Black Ops 6 is set around the Gulf War in the early 1990s; and Black Ops 7 takes place in 2035 and connects to Black Ops 2 and 6. These official descriptions establish selected links, not a complete chronology of every game.

The newer entries also arrived unusually close together. Black Ops 6 released October 25, 2024, followed by Black Ops 7 on November 14, 2025, according to Activision’s product pages. Those dates make the pair back-to-back releases within the sub-series, not evidence that every part of their content or live-service support is identical.
