Find and speak with him in each chapter, then return to his cart in Chapter 5 after progressing through the later boss sequence to complete the quest and earn the Dark Thunder transformation. The route below follows the chapter order and identifies nearby landmarks.
Chapter 1: Black Wind Mountain
After defeating Lingxuzi, continue toward the pond and the enemies ahead. Look to the left for a small cave or temple entrance. Ma Tianba is inside, near a Meditation Spot. Speak with him and exhaust his dialogue before leaving. Shacknews’ route guide describes this as a short detour from the path forward.
Chapter 2: Yellow Wind Ridge
In Sandgate Village, look for Ma Tianba tied to a pole inside a pavilion. You can approach through the front or circle around the right side. Speak with him; he cannot be freed during this encounter. Finish his dialogue before moving on.
Chapter 3: The New West
Ma Tianba is in New Thunderclap Temple. After entering, head left and climb the large double staircase into the building. Go up the next staircase and turn left to find him. He is on the temple’s left side, before the side hall where the Non-Void fight takes place, according to GameSpot’s transformation guide. Speak with him until his dialogue is exhausted.

Chapter 4: The Webbed Hollow
After the Centipede Guai encounter, follow the route up and to the right. Ma Tianba is trapped inside a cocoon. Break it, then speak with him before continuing.
Chapter 5: Flaming Mountains
The final encounter is a two-part stop in Furnace Valley. Find the inert cart after the Valley Entrance Shrine and interact with the whip or rope inside to trigger Ma Tianba’s dialogue. This does not finish the quest immediately.

Return to the cart after the later boss sequence
Continue through the relevant later boss sequence, then return to the cart and interact with it again. This return completes the quest and awards Dark Thunder. GameSpot describes the transformation as immune to thunder and able to inflict thunder bane.

At each meeting, continue speaking with Ma Tianba until his dialogue ends. GameSpot’s guide cautions that the earlier encounters should be completed before the Chapter 5 cart step; according to its playthrough, missing an earlier meeting can prevent the reward. The route has five listed meetings, one in each of Chapters 1–5; no Chapter 6 meeting is listed in these walkthroughs. The detailed directions come from guides published in 2024, and the available sources do not establish whether a later game patch changed any trigger.
