1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThis ranking covers six standalone Jak and Daxter releases: The Precursor Legacy, Jak II, Jak 3, Jak X: Combat Racing, Daxter, and Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier. That scope includes the racing spin-off and the two handheld-led adventures, not just Naughty Dog’s PS2 trilogy or every crossover appearance. The order is an editorial judgment based on how well each game delivers its own genre and premise, alongside its story, level design, and variety.
Every Jak and Daxter game, ranked
The series changes genres enough that a platforming-only yardstick would miss what several entries are trying to do. A racing game should be judged as a racer; a handheld adventure led by Daxter should not have to imitate the mainline trilogy. Readers who prize a particular style may reasonably choose a different order.

Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier
The least essential entry in this ranking is also the one with the most distinct pitch: Jak and Daxter take on Sky Pirates in an adventure that puts flight combat at the center and adds Dark Daxter. High Impact Games developed it as a later handheld-focused release, so it feels apart from the Naughty Dog console games in both authorship and design emphasis. The flight-combat premise gives it an identity, but it is a less cohesive fit for the series’ strongest traditions of exploration, platforming, and action.
-
Jak X: Combat Racing
Jak X is a combat racer, not a platforming sequel. It builds on the driving introduced in Jak 3, returns to the Wasteland, and uses a Dark Eco meter that connects damage taken or dealt with weapon boosts. That mechanic gives combat and risk a role in the driving, while the racing focus makes this the clearest genre detour among the six. Its placement depends heavily on whether you want a Jak game to be a racer; as a spin-off built around that premise, it has a clear reason to exist.

Daxter
This PSP adventure puts Daxter in the lead, with a bug-exterminator setup, gadgets, vehicles, and comedy. Ready At Dawn developed it, rather than Naughty Dog, and its handheld scale and character-led tone distinguish it from Jak’s console adventures. It succeeds most naturally when treated as a Daxter game rather than a smaller version of the trilogy: the premise gives the sidekick room to carry the action and humor himself.
-
Jak 3
Jak 3 continues the darker action direction and story established by Jak II, while making the Wasteland and open-world driving central to its identity. Light Jak abilities and additional gun modifications broaden the combat options, and the setting gives the game a different rhythm from the city-focused sequel. Its range makes it a strong culmination of the later games’ action-and-driving blend, though its appeal is tied to wanting that broader mix rather than the original’s focused platforming.

Jak II
Jak II is the series’ most consequential pivot. Released for PS2 on October 14, 2003, it gives Jak a speaking role and shifts from the first game’s largely bright platforming adventure toward a grittier world, an open city, weapons, and a more developed character arc. That change is a defining strength if you want a more dramatic action-adventure, and a likely sticking point if you prefer the lighter exploration of the original. Its ambition and tonal shift make it one of the series’ essential entries, even if the transformation is not what every fan wants.
-
Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
The original remains the best all-round expression of the duo’s platforming foundation. Released for PS2 on December 3, 2001, it centers on exploration, platforming, and discovering Power Cells, introducing Jak’s story in a bright adventure before the series moved into open-city action, desert driving, and racing. Its focused design is its advantage: the world invites exploration without needing the later games’ weapons or genre shifts to make the journey distinctive. For readers seeking the classic Jak and Daxter feel, this is the strongest place to start.

Why the ranking changes with your favorite kind of game
The top spots favor the entries that most convincingly deliver a distinctive Jak and Daxter adventure: the first game’s exploration and platforming, then the sequels’ expanded action and world design. The lower placements are not a claim that racing or handheld games do not count. They reflect how far those games sit from the core platforming-to-action arc, while still giving them credit for distinct premises. If combat racing is your priority, Jak X may be your personal favorite; if you want Daxter’s humor and a handheld adventure, Daxter may rise above entries built around Jak.
