The main Super Mario platform games, in release order, run from Super Mario Bros. (1985) to Super Mario Bros. Wonder (2023). This list counts original 2D and 3D platform games, including the Game Boy adventures, but not ports, remakes, compilations, mobile games, or level-creation games as separate debuts. Years follow Nintendo’s official US history and are not worldwide first-release dates.
Every main Super Mario game in release order
Nintendo’s official Mario history supplies the dated sequence below. The years are the ones shown on that US-region page; Nintendo’s investor schedule cautions that release dates may differ by region. Use this as a year-based chronology, not a claim that each game launched everywhere in the same year.

What counts as a main Super Mario game?
“Mainline” can be used differently across game lists. Here it means original 2D and 3D platform adventures, on home consoles or handhelds. That includes the two Super Mario Land games: they are portable platform entries, not spin-offs to omit simply because they first appeared on Game Boy.
Nintendo’s history page includes a “Mainline” filter, but its broader franchise history also shows other kinds of releases. Applying a clear rule matters: a new platform-game debut belongs in the chronology; a later edition or a game built around making levels does not become a new original platform entry just by appearing in the series history.

Which Mario releases are not separate original entries?
Nintendo’s history also lists these releases. They are relevant to the franchise, but their release type distinguishes them from the original platform-game debuts in the chronology:
- Super Mario Maker (2015) and Super Mario Maker 2 (2019) are level-creation games.
- Super Mario Run (2016) is a mobile game.
- New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe (2019) is a later edition of New Super Mario Bros. U.
- Super Mario 3D All-Stars (2020) is a compilation.
- Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury (2021) is an expanded re-release of Super Mario 3D World.
These distinctions describe why the releases are not counted as new original debuts here; they do not imply that they are unimportant or that players should skip them.
Rank #2
- A variety of playable characters are available, some with unique attributes that affect gameplay and platforming physics.
- Younger and less-experienced players will love playing as Toadette, who is brand new to both games, and Nabbit, who was formerly only playable in New Super Luigi U. Both characters offer extra assistance during play.
- Multiplayer sessions are even more fun, frantic, and exciting thanks to entertaining character interactions. Need a boost? Try jumping off a teammate’s head or getting a teammate to throw you.
- Features a wealth of help features, like a Hints gallery, reference videos, and a Super Guide in New Super Mario Bros. U that can complete levels for you if they’re giving you trouble.
- Three additional modes—Boost Rush, Challenges, and Coin Battle—mix up gameplay and add replayability, while also upping the difficulty for players who want to try something harder. Players can use their Mii characters in these modes.
How to choose a starting point
If you are deciding what to play rather than tracing the series’ history, start with the format and era that appeal to you. The list spans classic 2D games, portable entries, and 3D adventures. You can follow the chronology for a view of how the series changed, or choose an individual game based on its original platform and style. Super Mario Bros. Wonder is the latest original platform entry in this list, according to Nintendo’s history.
What about the 2026 Switch 2 edition?
Nintendo’s investor launch schedule published February 3, 2026 lists Super Mario Bros. Wonder – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup in Bellabel Park for 2026. It is an edition of the 2023 game, not a new original platform-game debut for this chronology. Nintendo says scheduled dates may change and can differ by region.
