Mega Evolution returns in Pokémon Legends: Z-A: a Trainer’s Key Stone resonates with a Pokémon-held Mega Stone, temporarily unleashing the Pokémon’s hidden energy. The official Pokémon game pages confirm the mechanic and some forms, while Nintendo Life’s dated guides provide the broadest roster lists covered here. Those guides mix base-game, update and reward forms, so their counts should not be read as an official Pokémon Company total.
How to read the roster
The Pokémon Company’s Mega Evolution index visibly names Mega Charizard X, Mega Charizard Y, Mega Kangaskhan, Mega Ampharos, Mega Gardevoir, Mega Sableye, Mega Altaria, Mega Absol and Mega Lucario. That readable index is not a complete roster. The longer lists below draw on Nintendo Life’s December 10, 2025 base-game guide and December 17, 2025 Mega Dimension guide. Treat them as dated guide coverage, not an official final count; availability can depend on updates, online rewards or DLC.
The base-game guide’s table contains 72 entries, but the later DLC guide classifies Mega Baxcalibur as a newly introduced Mega Dimension form. Because those two dated lists conflict on its placement, Mega Baxcalibur is marked separately rather than presented as an unqualified base-game form. The base-guide table also includes forms distributed through updates and Ranked Battle rewards.
Forms in the base-game guide
The following 72 names appear in Nintendo Life’s December 10, 2025 base-game guide. This is the guide’s reported table, not a guarantee that every form is available from ordinary offline story play.

Special availability: Ranked Battle and Mewtwo
Chesnaught, Delphox and Greninja
A September 12, 2025 Pokémon announcement says the Mega Stones for Mega Chesnaught, Mega Delphox and Mega Greninja are promotion rewards in online Ranked Battles, rather than items normally obtained through regular gameplay. That announcement said redistribution in future seasons was planned; it does not establish the current season’s availability. Check the in-game Ranked Battle notices for the current reward window.
Mewtwo X and Y
According to the Pokémon Company’s December 2, 2025 Mewtwo notice, the Mega Stones for Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y are received through Mystery Gift, and either game edition can receive them. An additional Mewtwo side mission requires completion of the main story. These are dated instructions, so confirm current Mystery Gift availability in-game.

Mega Dimension is post-main-story DLC, not part of the base game. The official DLC overview names some forms, including Mega Raichu X and Mega Raichu Y, Mega Chimecho, Mega Baxcalibur, Mega Zeraora, Mega Lucario Z and Mega Garchomp Z. Nintendo Life’s December 17, 2025 DLC guide provides this broader list of newly introduced forms:

The guide says Mega Tatsugiri has three forms. The list is secondary-source coverage; the official DLC overview does not name every entry above.

Returning forms also listed for the DLC
The DLC guide also identifies these returning forms, which it distinguishes from newly created Mega Evolutions:
- Primal Kyogre
- Primal Groudon
- Mega Rayquaza
- Mega Latias
- Mega Latios
Do not rely on the DLC guide’s acquisition or type details for Primal Kyogre and Primal Groudon: its table appears internally inconsistent on both points. The names are useful roster references, but those specific details are not established here.

What Mega Evolution changes
The official Pokémon game page describes Mega Evolution as temporarily releasing a Pokémon’s hidden energy. A Pokémon holds its Mega Stone while its Trainer’s Key Stone resonates with it; the Pokémon changes appearance, and some Mega Evolutions may change type. That general description does not establish a particular form’s type or battle role, so those specifics are not inferred in this roster.
For the distinction that matters when collecting forms, use the relevant category: the base-game guide’s roster is broad but includes later-distributed entries; three starter-line Mega Stones were tied to Ranked Battle promotions in the dated announcement; and the additional Mega Dimension forms require the post-story expansion. Official Pokémon pages establish the named mechanics and selected DLC forms, while the fuller lists above rely on the two dated Nintendo Life guides.
