Metro Exodus ranks first if you value exploration and variety, while Metro 2033 remains the strongest starting point for the series’ underground survival-horror identity. This is an editorial ranking, not a universal verdict: the games offer different strengths, and the VR-only Metro Awakening is harder to compare directly with the mainline releases.
Here, “every Metro game” means the four released standalone games: Metro 2033, Metro: Last Light, Metro Exodus, and Metro Awakening. Redux is an edition and collection of the first two games, while The Two Colonels and Sam’s Story are Exodus expansions—not separate entries.
How this ranking works
The order weighs story and character payoff, atmosphere, level design and exploration, combat and stealth, and how broadly accessible each game is. It is a considered comparison, not a claim that critics or players have agreed on a single order. The available official descriptions help distinguish the games’ scope and features, but do not publish a shared comparative score.
That matters most for Metro Awakening: it is a VR spin-off, so its platform requirements make it less accessible to the general audience than the mainline games. Its lower placement reflects that scope and accessibility difference, not evidence that it is objectively worse.

Every Metro game ranked
4. Metro Awakening
Metro Awakening is a distinct VR release listed for SteamVR, Meta Quest, and PlayStation VR2. Its format makes it a different proposition from the mainline games: players need a compatible VR setup, which narrows its audience. The official listings establish its platforms and release year, but the material available here does not provide a directly comparable critical score or quality verdict.
For readers who already play VR, that distinction may matter less, and Awakening could rank higher on personal preference. For a broad series ranking that includes accessibility alongside atmosphere and story, it lands fourth.

3. Metro: Last Light
Last Light is the second mainline chapter, following Artyom’s story after Metro 2033. Deep Silver places its events in 2034 and describes a conflict centered on the station-cities and D6. That makes it an important continuation rather than an ideal entry point: its character and story payoff depend on what came before.
It sits below the other mainline games here because it occupies the middle of the trilogy’s arc, rather than defining the series’ initial survival-horror identity or expanding its world as broadly as Exodus. Its place is not a judgment that the middle chapter is dispensable; it is the bridge between the first game’s introduction and the later journey.

2. Metro 2033
Metro 2033 establishes the series’ defining contrast between the claustrophobic Moscow underground and the dangerous wasteland above. Deep Silver describes Artyom’s mission as taking him from the metro into that surface world. As the beginning of the mainline story, it gives the strongest foundation for understanding the characters and stakes that continue into Last Light and Exodus.
It ranks second because its narrower, more confined design is a strength for tension but offers less breadth than Exodus. Readers who most value oppressive atmosphere and survival horror may reasonably put it first.

1. Metro Exodus
Exodus takes the top spot for its broader range of spaces and play styles. Its official description highlights vast, non-linear levels alongside survival systems, combat, stealth, and exploration, as Artyom’s journey spans post-apocalyptic Russia. The result is the series’ most expansive entry, with a greater sense of travel and discovery than the earlier underground-focused games.
Its larger scale is not automatically better for every player. Someone seeking the tight, claustrophobic pressure of the metro may prefer Metro 2033 or Last Light. But when breadth, exploration, and varied encounters are the deciding criteria, Exodus is the strongest overall package.

What order do I play the Metro games?
For the mainline story, play Metro 2033 → Metro: Last Light → Metro Exodus. Deep Silver’s descriptions place the stories in 2033, 2034, and 2036, respectively. Metro Awakening is a VR spin-off, not the next mainline chapter in that sequence.
If you want the first two games together, Metro Redux is a collection of Redux versions of Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light, not a separate story entry. Deep Silver describes it as a double-game collection. The Two Colonels and Sam’s Story belong to Metro Exodus as expansions.
Which Metro game should you start with?
- For the complete mainline story: begin with Metro 2033, then continue to Last Light and Exodus.
- For exploration and a wider range of environments: choose Metro Exodus, while recognizing that it is the third mainline story.
- For VR: consider Metro Awakening if you have a compatible platform and want a spin-off rather than the mainline sequence.
The official Metro listings describe Exodus as inspired by Dmitry Glukhovsky’s novels, but the book is optional; the games have their own playable story progression.
Why storefront ratings do not settle the ranking
Store scores are snapshots, not an apples-to-apples series ranking. The Steam Metro Exodus listing showed 87% positive English-language reviews from 34,775 reviews in a 2026 access snapshot. The PlayStation Store Metro Saga Bundle showed 4.53 out of five from 64,979 ratings in a separate 2026 access snapshot. Those figures cover different products, platforms, and rating systems; the bundle score is not a rating for each game.
