There is no single reliable way to fight every mutant in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl. Swarms and chargers are best handled with movement and economical fire; cloaked or leaping enemies call for timing; telekinetic and psi threats make cover and line of sight essential. Against Chimeras and pseudogiants, retreat is often the sensible choice.

Windows Central’s November 28, 2024 guide lists 16 categories, including rats, while explicitly questioning whether rats count as mutants. Treat that as the guide’s roster, not an official in-game bestiary total. SEGA’s Japanese overview describes a selection of mutants rather than a complete list. Windows Central’s guide and SEGA’s announcement provide those respective scopes.

How to choose a response

Identify what the mutant is doing before spending ammunition. A charging animal rewards a sidestep; a Controller punishes exposure; a Burer may turn your own weapon against you. The tactics below are guide recommendations, not guaranteed counters: enemy behavior and balance can change between updates.

  • Swarm or rush: keep moving, avoid being surrounded, and use low-cost ammunition on weaker targets.
  • Leap or charge: watch the attack wind-up, dodge laterally, then fire during recovery.
  • Cloak or illusion: track visual cues and wait for a close, clear shot rather than firing blindly.
  • Telekinesis or psi: break line of sight with cover and attack when the threat is exposed or distracted.
  • Overwhelming durability: use terrain and a powerful weapon only if you must fight; otherwise withdraw.

Small and pack-based mutants

Rats

Windows Central describes rats as dangerous in numbers despite being weak individually, and questions whether they qualify as mutants. Climb onto nearby objects to limit their access and, if a swarm gathers, consider a grenade rather than spending ammunition on each animal.

Rodents

These oversized rat-like creatures are described as low-health enemies that often appear in groups. Use pistol ammunition where practical and save stronger rounds for more durable threats.

Blind dogs

Listen for barking and avoid letting a pack close around you. Backpedal while firing, then sprint in one direction to break the encirclement before turning to shoot again.

Fleshes

Fleshes are slower and tougher than blind dogs, but can leap. Maintain distance and dodge sideways when one launches its attack instead of retreating in a straight line.

Boars

Boars can charge in groups and knock you down. Sprint sideways or jump as a charge comes in; a shotgun is a strong option if you have to stand and fight. A short object you can climb onto may buy a brief safe moment, but should not be treated as dependable cover in every encounter.

Snorks

Snorks leap quickly and may evade shots. Fire as one jumps, move away before turning to aim again, and use lateral sprint-jumps to make yourself a harder target.

Cloaked, telekinetic, and psi threats

Bloodsuckers

Bloodsuckers cloak, circle, and rush in for melee attacks. Watch for the shimmer; at night, a flashlight can help you follow it. A shotgun is most useful when the creature commits to its approach, so avoid wasting shells at long range. Epic Games recommends positioning with your back to a wall and preparing a close-range blast, which can reduce the angles from which it circles you. Bloodsucker appearances may vary by habitat, according to GSC Game World’s Update 2.0 notes.

Poltergeists

Poltergeists throw nearby objects and may form a protective barrier of rocks. Dodge the incoming debris, close the distance when safe, and attack the visible electrical form rather than firing into the barrier. SEGA’s overview also describes their telekinetic use of objects.

Zombies

Windows Central’s guide says body shots can knock zombies down without finishing them. Aim for the head, and use cover when several are present so you are not exposed while lining up shots.

Controllers

Controllers use psi attacks that disrupt the player and can cause hallucinations. SEGA also describes them using zombies. Break line of sight behind cover, use a psi-blocking consumable if you have one, and attack during an opening instead of remaining exposed. If zombies are present, avoid letting them pin you in the open while the Controller attacks.

Burers

A Burer can manipulate guns, pull weapons away, and raise a shield. Keep cover between you and it; peek and fire when it is vulnerable, then wait out the shield rather than wasting ammunition. Keep a backup weapon ready. Epic’s guide specifically suggests using a pistol from a safe position if the Burer takes your primary gun.

Psy-Dogs

Psy-Dogs create illusory copies. Epic’s guide reports that the real dog may glow when duplicates appear, but that cue should not be treated as a guaranteed tell in every encounter. Windows Central notes that distinguishing the real target can be difficult; if the fight is consuming too much ammunition, retreat or seek help rather than spraying at every copy.

Bayun cats

Bayun cats may imitate calls for help to lure players close before attacking. Approach suspicious cries cautiously, keep space to dodge, and have a shotgun ready for a close encounter.

Mutated deer, or pseudodeer

SEGA describes a deer-like mutant that emits low-frequency sounds, disrupts electronics, and confuses people. Windows Central adds that it can summon and control other mutant animals, as well as charge at the player. Keep room to maneuver and watch for the supporting animals instead of focusing only on the deer.

High-risk mutants: fight only when necessary

Chimeras

SEGA describes the Chimera as an apex predator combining feline agility with great strength. If you cannot avoid the fight, use terrain and seek high ground where possible. Epic recommends avoiding a direct confrontation and getting above it; Windows Central advises changing direction to bait its leap, then using a strong shotgun if escape is not possible. Treat those as situational tactics, not a guarantee that the Chimera will be safely contained.

Pseudogiants

Pseudogiants are highly durable and can attack with powerful arm swings and shockwaves, according to SEGA. Retreat where possible. If forced to fight, kite around substantial cover and use a shotgun or RPG only when you have a safe opportunity to fire.

Patch and platform context

Combat behavior can change with updates, so avoid relying on exact health, damage, or spawn-rate claims unless current official notes support them. GSC Game World’s Update 2.0 announcement describes gameplay changes and habitat-dependent Bloodsucker appearances.

SEGA’s November 18, 2025 announcement concerns the Japanese PS5 release and provides a selected mutant overview; its regional product details should not be generalized to other markets. It lists PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5, and says the PS5 Standard Edition is packaged while PC and Xbox editions are digital-only in that product description.
