The Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition adds five Switch 2-specific features: higher resolution in TV mode, Joy-Con 2 mouse controls, a microphone-powered megaphone, CameraPlay support, and online sessions for up to 12 players when everyone is using the Switch 2 Edition. The resort hotel and other new content are part of a separate free update available on both Switch generations.
What’s new in the Switch 2 Edition?
Nintendo’s edition features are tied to Switch 2 hardware or the expanded online capacity. Here is what changes when you play on that console.

Enhanced resolution in TV mode
The Switch 2 Edition supports enhanced resolution up to 4K when played in TV mode. A 4K-capable display is required to see output at that resolution; the feature does not mean every screen or play mode displays at 4K. Nintendo’s feature page and its UK edition page describe the resolution enhancement.
Joy-Con 2 mouse controls for creative tasks
You can use the right Joy-Con 2 as a mouse for tasks that benefit from precise pointing. Nintendo lists moving furniture and decorating indoors, creating Custom Designs, and writing bulletin-board messages as supported uses. This is an additional control option for those activities, rather than a change to the game’s overall premise or a requirement for playing.

- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
A megaphone that uses the console microphone
The in-game megaphone uses the Switch 2’s built-in microphone: call a resident’s name to help locate them. Nintendo’s UK page says the item can be purchased at Nook’s Cranny. This feature uses the console microphone, not a separately purchased camera.
CameraPlay video features
With a compatible, separately sold USB camera, CameraPlay lets you use video features and see friends’ reactions through GameChat. Nintendo names its Switch 2 camera as one compatible USB-C camera. The accessory is optional for the core game; it is relevant if you want these camera-enabled features.

Online sessions for up to 12 players
The Switch 2 Edition supports online sessions of up to 12 players when every participant has the Switch 2 Edition. Nintendo’s UK page lists local wireless play for up to eight players. Online features require a Nintendo Account and a Nintendo Switch Online membership. The 12-player capacity is therefore not a general increase for mixed groups where some players are using the original Switch version.
Which additions come from the free update?
The resort hotel is not exclusive to the Switch 2 Edition. Nintendo announced a free content update for both the original Switch and Switch 2 versions, including a resort hotel run by Kapp’n’s family, themed items and characters, and Slumber Island for Nintendo Switch Online members. These game-content additions are separate from the Switch 2 Edition’s resolution, mouse controls, microphone megaphone, CameraPlay support, and larger online sessions. Nintendo’s announcement explains the distinction.

How to get the Switch 2 Edition
You can buy the full Switch 2 Edition or, if you already own Animal Crossing: New Horizons, use the Upgrade Pack route. Nintendo’s US digital listing says the Upgrade Pack requires the original game, and its UK product page also describes an upgrade pack for existing owners.
| Option | What it’s for | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| Full Switch 2 Edition | Buying the game as a complete edition | Nintendo lists a physical edition separately on its US store page. |
| Digital Upgrade Pack | Adding the Switch 2 Edition for an existing owner | Nintendo’s US listing says the original game is required. |
Nintendo’s US announcement stated a January 15, 2026 launch date and US launch prices of $64.99 for the full edition and $4.99 for the Upgrade Pack. Those are launch prices, not confirmation of current pricing or availability. Nintendo says the Switch 2 Edition is playable only on Nintendo Switch 2; inserting its game card into an original Switch plays the original Switch version without the Switch 2-exclusive features.
Quick Recap
Which version makes sense for you?
- You already own the original game: The Upgrade Pack is the specified route to the Switch 2 Edition; Nintendo’s US listing requires the base game.
- You do not own the game: Consider the full Switch 2 Edition, available as a separately listed physical edition. Check Nintendo’s store for current regional availability and pricing.
- You plan to play on the original Switch: The Switch 2 Edition’s exclusive features require Switch 2. The separate free update is available to both generations.
- You want CameraPlay video features: You will need a compatible separately sold USB camera. It is not required for ordinary play.
- You want a 12-player online session: Every participant needs the Switch 2 Edition, and online play requires Nintendo Switch Online and a Nintendo Account.
