The main Resident Evil story chronology starts with Resident Evil 0 on July 23, 1998, then reaches the Mansion Incident in Resident Evil the next day. The Raccoon City chapters are the tricky part: Resident Evil 3 begins on September 28, while Resident Evil 2 is dated September 29, and their stories overlap. Here is Capcom’s listed game timeline, with the principal entries first and selected side stories placed separately.
What is the chronological order of the main Resident Evil games?
This order follows the fictional events, not the games’ release dates. Capcom’s official chronology dates the central entries as follows:
- Resident Evil 0 — July 23, 1998.
- Resident Evil — July 24, 1998; the Mansion Incident.
- Resident Evil 3 — begins September 28, 1998; its events overlap with Resident Evil 2.
- Resident Evil 2 — dated September 29, 1998; its events overlap with Resident Evil 3.
- Resident Evil Code: Veronica — December 1998.
- Resident Evil 4 — autumn 2004.
- Resident Evil 5 — March 2009.
- Resident Evil 6 — June 2013.
- Resident Evil 7 biohazard — 2017; the timeline graphic gives July.
- Resident Evil Village — February 2021.
These dates and placements follow Capcom’s official Resident Evil chronology. The list is a useful backbone for the central story, not a claim that every licensed, mobile, multiplayer, or otherwise peripheral release is included.
Where do Resident Evil 0, 2, and 3 fit?
Resident Evil 0 comes immediately before the first game
Resident Evil 0 is set on July 23, 1998, one day before the July 24 Mansion Incident in Resident Evil. That makes it first by story chronology, even though it was released later.

Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 overlap
Do not read the numbered list as meaning that all of Resident Evil 3 happens before all of Resident Evil 2. Capcom dates RE3’s beginning to September 28 and RE2 to September 29, and describes both stories as taking place in Raccoon City at around the same time. RE3 continues through the city’s final days, so these are concurrent chapters of the same crisis rather than a clean handoff from one complete game to the next.
Capcom’s chronology describes Resident Evil 3 as the remake of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, and Resident Evil 2 as the remake of Resident Evil 2. The dates above are story placements; they do not mean the remakes and their original versions are separate consecutive incidents.

Where do the Resident Evil side stories fit?
Capcom’s listed chronology also places selected spin-offs and story collections within the broader game timeline. Their narrative scope can span more than one event, so they do not all fit neatly between single mainline entries.
| Game | Chronological placement | How it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Resident Evil Outbreak | September 1998 | During the Raccoon City incident. |
| Resident Evil Outbreak File 2 | September 1998 | Also during the Raccoon City incident. |
| Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles | Stories from 1998–2002 | Its Operation Javier story is set during the periods of Resident Evil 2 and Code: Veronica. |
| Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles | Stories from 1998–2003 | Includes the Raccoon City incident and Umbrella’s end. |
| Resident Evil Revelations | 2005 | Falls after Resident Evil 4 and before Resident Evil 5. |
| Resident Evil Revelations 2 | 2011 | Falls after Resident Evil 5 and before Resident Evil 6. |
These placements and descriptions come from Capcom’s listed chronology. It is a curated timeline, not an exhaustive inventory of every game bearing the franchise name.

Is chronological order the same as release order?
No. The chronology starts with Resident Evil 0, but the first game in the franchise’s release history was Resident Evil, released in March 1996. Capcom’s franchise history records release-history milestones; its dated story timeline is the relevant guide for in-universe order.
If you are choosing a version to play, check the exact title and platform in Capcom’s game lineup. Platform support differs by title, so confirm the current regional listing rather than assuming every entry is available on the same systems.

Do the Resident Evil films belong in this game order?
No. Capcom separates the live-action movies as “Parallel World Live-action Movies” and identifies Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City as being on a different timeline from the video games. Do not insert the live-action films into the game chronology. Capcom’s page also includes selected computer-animated films among its dated media entries; those belong to a broader franchise-media chronology, not this game list.
