Tactical is the best all-round class for most Operations squads, followed by Bulwark, Heavy, Vanguard, Sniper, and Assault. This is a qualitative ranking of general squad usefulness—not an official tier list or a measured win-rate comparison. Your preferred role, build, mission, difficulty, patch version, and squad composition can change which class feels strongest.
How this Operations ranking works
Operations is the game’s cooperative PvE mode, and it has a separate progression track from Eternal War PvP: Operations experience and Armoury Data can upgrade classes and weapons, while PvE perks and weapon upgrades do not carry into PvP. Focus Entertainment’s overview of the game’s combat and mechanics explains that distinction.

The ranking below weighs four practical considerations: contribution to a mixed squad, reliability across different mission situations, flexibility of role or build, and how much a class depends on positioning, execution, or coordination. These are editorial criteria, not published game statistics. Focus confirms the six-class roster, but the official sources cited here do not provide a universal class ranking, win rates, usage shares, or comparative damage figures.
Operations classes, ranked
1. Tactical — the safest all-round pick
Tactical is the broadest recommendation if you want adaptable ranged contribution and a useful role in varied squads. Its place at the top reflects general versatility, not a claim that it has the highest damage or wins more often than every other class.
#1 Best Overall
- Embody the superhuman skill and brutality of a Space Marine. Unleash deadly abilities and devastating weaponry to obliterate the relentless Tyranid swarms. Defend the Imperium in spectacular third-person action in solo or co-op modes.
- Purge the relentless Tyranid swarms as legendary Space Marine Titus in a spectacular new campaign. Play solo or with up to 2 friends in 3 player co-op.

- Standard edition includes: Base game, Macragge’s Chosen DLC, with 3 unique cosmetics for your Bolt Rifle, Chainsword & Power Armour
Build choice matters. Official Patch 15.0 notes describe a Tactical perk rework and options involving two primary weapons, Gun Strike, or close combat. Those choices support flexibility, but do not establish that every build performs equally well.
2. Bulwark — valuable front-line support
Choose Bulwark if you want a durable front-line role and value supporting the squad. That team-oriented profile earns it a high general-purpose position, though a shield-focused approach may suit some encounters and party compositions better than others.
Balance details can change: Patch 14.0 changed the damage cap associated with knocking Bulwark out of shield stance from 300 to 200. Treat older descriptions of that interaction as potentially out of date.
3. Heavy — dependable ranged pressure
Heavy is a strong fit if you prefer sustained ranged fighting and want a protective contribution to the team. Its third-place spot is a role-based editorial judgment, not an official balance position or a measured comparison with Tactical and Bulwark.
Rank #2
- Brand new. UK Import PAL version. Game in English. UK PSN account may be required for any online features.
4. Vanguard — an aggressive, flexible hybrid
Vanguard suits players who like closing distance and fighting up close while retaining ranged options. Its value is more dependent on preference and encounter than the broadest all-round picks above it.
Patch notes matter here too: Patch 14.0 increased Vanguard’s ability charges from two to three. Descriptions based on an earlier charge count may no longer be accurate.
5. Sniper — precision with a narrower default role
Sniper is the specialist choice for players who enjoy precision and prioritizing targets. It ranks lower only in this broad squad-usefulness list because that role is narrower by default; the available official sources do not establish that Sniper deals less damage or is weaker overall.
6. Assault — mobile melee specialist
Assault is built around mobility and melee, so its value depends heavily on execution and mission context. Sixth place here does not mean the class is unusable or incapable of strong play; it reflects a preference-sensitive judgment about broad, mixed-squad usefulness, not a proven universal disadvantage.

Which class should you choose?
| If you want… | Start with… |
|---|---|
| An adaptable all-round role | Tactical |
| A defensive, team-support role | Bulwark |
| Ranged fighting | Heavy |
| An aggressive close-range hybrid | Vanguard |
| Precision and target prioritization | Sniper |
| Mobile melee combat | Assault |
Use the ranking as a starting point, not a rule. Class value can shift with difficulty, patch version, weapon and perk choices, and who else is in your party. If you already know the role you enjoy, choosing the class that fits it is more useful than chasing a universal “best.”
Patch and matchmaking context
Patch 15.0 is the latest official class-related update cited here; it also introduces Crucible, an endgame PvE mode for level-25 classes. Patch 14.0 documents the Vanguard and Bulwark changes noted above. The class order in this article is not an official ranking, and no comparative performance statistics are established by those notes.
Class-based matchmaking is intended to reduce, not eliminate, matches with teammates using the same class. Focus’s Patch 7.0 notes call it “a first iteration of the system that is designed to reduce frequency of matchmaking with other people with the same classes” and say same-class matches can still occur in edge cases. That limitation concerns matchmaking, not class strength.
