Path of Exile 2’s cited wiki lists seven ailments: Bleeding, Ignite, Chill, Freeze, Shock, Electrocute, and Poison. Three deal damage over time, while four do not; Pin and Stun are immobilization effects discussed alongside ailments, but they are not on that seven-ailment list. The key distinction is how an effect builds up: many ailments use an ailment threshold, while immobilization effects such as Freeze, Electrocute, Pin, and Stun use poise.

The seven ailments at a glance

Ailment Category What the research supports
Bleeding Damaging Listed as a damaging ailment. The reviewed sources do not establish a complete current explanation of its damage calculation.
Ignite Damaging A fire damage-over-time ailment. The wiki reports a four-second default duration and baseline damage equal to 20% of the fire damage dealt by the hit; confirm these patch-sensitive details before relying on them.
Chill Non-damaging Slows the target. Its magnitude depends on the hit and the target’s threshold; the reviewed sources do not settle every current cap or duration detail.
Freeze Non-damaging Prevents the target from moving or acting. Cold hits build Freeze; the wiki reports a four-second default duration.
Shock Non-damaging Increases damage taken. The wiki reports 20% increased damage taken, with default durations of four seconds on players and eight seconds on non-player targets. These values may change by patch.
Electrocute Non-damaging Interrupts actions and prevents the target from acting. The wiki reports a five-second default duration.
Poison Damaging Listed as a damage-over-time ailment. The reviewed sources do not establish a complete current account of its calculation, duration, or stacking.

These definitions and reported values come from the community-maintained Path of Exile 2 Wiki and may lag game updates. Treat the listed durations and magnitudes as reference values, not guaranteed current values.

How ailment buildup differs from immobilization

The Path of Exile 2 Wiki describes many ailment applications as depending on damage before mitigation relative to the defender’s ailment threshold. Bleeding and Poison are exceptions in its overview: they use static numerical application chance rather than that general threshold formula.

Immobilization effects use a different measure. Freeze, Electrocute, Pin, and Stun use poise rather than the ailment-threshold value used for many ailment calculations. This distinction matters when interpreting chance-to-inflict modifiers or trying to understand why an effect builds up differently on different targets.

Other effects commonly grouped with ailments

Pin and Stun are immobilization effects, not entries in the wiki’s seven-item ailment list. Light Stun is also discussed separately in official patch notes. Avoid treating every disabling effect or combat debuff as an ailment: the game’s categories and buildup rules are not interchangeable.

Patch changes and version context

Status-effect behavior can change between updates, so date any balance figures you cite. Grinding Gear Games said in its December 16, 2024 announcement that Electrocute was made 25% harder to build up and that Freeze buildup applied after a Freeze was reduced to make chain-freezing more difficult. Those are historical patch facts, not assurances about current values.

In its April 15, 2025 version 0.2.0f notes, Grinding Gear Games described reducing monsters’ Light Stun capacity by reducing stun damage and increasing the minimum required to Light Stun. The notes also added passive-tree investment in stun and ailment thresholds based on Energy Shield. These changes describe that dated update, not a complete current guide to stun.
