Everything but the Beholders: D&D Updates Core Rules and Keeps the CC License

D&D creators can build compatible products from SRD 5.2.1 under CC BY 4.0, but the Beholder, Forgotten Realms lore, and other excluded IP are not included.

Creators can now use Wizards of the Coast’s revised Dungeons & Dragons rules as the basis for compatible products under a Creative Commons license—but the permission covers only the material included in the System Reference Document (SRD), not every monster, setting, or brand element. The current reference is SRD 5.2.1, released under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0).

What changed in D&D’s SRD?

Wizards announced on May 6, 2024, that it would expand the earlier SRD 5.1 using the revised Player’s Handbook, Dungeon Master’s Guide, and Monster Manual. The expanded SRD 5.2 followed in 2025. The current official page lists SRD 5.2.1, published May 1, 2025, and includes a conversion guide for creators moving material from 5.1 to 5.2.1. D&D Beyond’s SRD page was last updated March 2, 2026. Wizards’ 2024 announcement set out the plan, and its 2025 release article announced that creators could use the new document.

D&D Beyond now labels the revised rules “5.5e,” while material from 2014 remains “5e.” The page’s March 2026 clarification concerns naming; it does not change purchases or gameplay. SRD 5.1 remains the reference for products based on the 2014 rules, while SRD 5.2.1 is the reference for the revised rules.

What the revised document includes

SRD 5.2 updates rules and options including character creation, classes, character origins, feats, equipment, and the rules glossary. The official FAQ also describes new backgrounds and species, additional feats, weapon mastery properties, and changes to wording and mechanics. Version 5.2.1 adds 15 magic items that were missing from the initial 5.2 release. The official page lists German, Spanish, French, and Italian SRDs as published December 8, 2025.

What CC BY 4.0 lets creators do

Wizards says creators may publish and sell products compatible with 5e or 5.5e using the corresponding SRD, including printed products, provided they follow the license’s terms and give the required attribution. The SRD can also be used commercially through crowdfunding and ongoing-support platforms. Wizards’ May 27, 2025 release article says, “Anything you create using SRD 5.2 is yours!” In context, that means creators retain their original work and may use SRD material as CC BY 4.0 permits—not that they receive rights to D&D material omitted from the document.

The license applies to the released SRD version. Wizards’ FAQ says it cannot revoke or alter a document after releasing it under CC BY 4.0. It may issue errata in a later version, such as 5.2.1 or 5.2.2, but each released version remains available under its own Creative Commons terms. Creators should identify the version they are using, follow its attribution requirements, and check which content it actually includes.

Why the Beholder is still out

The SRD is a selective rules reference, not a license to use all D&D intellectual property. Wizards names the Artificer, Aasimar, and Beholder among the excluded classes, species, and monsters. It says exclusions reflect brand identity, licensing strategy, and intellectual property, and encourages creators to make original equivalents. A CC license on SRD material does not by itself grant permission to use excluded names, creatures, D&D trademarks, setting lore, or other material outside the document.

Choosing between SRD 5.1, SRD 5.2.1, and DMsGuild

Route Best fit Key boundary
SRD 5.1 Compatible products based on the 2014 rules. Use the content and terms of SRD 5.1; it is not the revised-rules reference.
SRD 5.2.1 Compatible products based on the revised rules, labeled 5.5e by D&D Beyond. Only SRD-covered material is available under CC BY 4.0; excluded D&D IP is not included.
DMsGuild Publishing content set in D&D worlds such as the Forgotten Realms. Wizards identifies it as the route for setting-based publishing, distinct from using an SRD to make independent compatible products.

Wizards distinguishes SRD publishing from DMsGuild: the SRD supports compatible products based on its included rules, while DMsGuild is the route it identifies for content set in D&D worlds such as the Forgotten Realms. Before publishing, decide which rules edition the product targets, whether it uses only included rules or also relies on setting material, and whether independent sales or publication within an official setting is the goal.

Do you need to buy the core books to use the SRD?

No. The SRD is available as a free download from the official SRD page; buying the 2024 revised core books is not necessary just to access it. The books and the SRD serve different purposes: the books are the complete core rulebooks, while the SRD is the material Wizards has made available for creators under CC BY 4.0.
