Everything Is Crab: The Animal Evolution Roguelite is a single-player action roguelite in which every run asks you to shape an animal-like creature through evolutionary choices, survive a changing ecosystem and decide how far to pursue each build. The title borrows its joke from carcinization: a real pattern in which non-crab crustaceans independently evolve crab-like body forms. That process is neither a rule that applies to all organisms nor a one-way march toward becoming a crab.
This guide explains the run structure advertised by the official listing, the decisions that matter most to a new player, the game’s requirements and the biology behind its central gag.

What Everything Is Crab is
Everything Is Crab combines creature-building with action-roguelite runs. Instead of selecting a permanent hero with a fixed class, you begin with an animal-inspired character and make evolution choices that alter both its mechanics and its appearance. A run is therefore a build experiment: you are trying to assemble traits that let your creature function in the current ecosystem, then seeing how long that combination can survive.

Steam describes the concept as “Spore meets Modern Roguelites.” The comparison points to two parts of the design: visible, animal-like transformation and repeatable runs in which choices, threats and outcomes vary. The store description does not establish one correct route or a single best creature. It presents several strategies and play styles, so your first objective should be learning how choices affect movement, offense and survivability rather than copying an alleged perfect build.

The beginner run loop
The listing gives you the ingredients of a run but not a fixed mission script. The safest way to approach your first attempts is to treat each run as a sequence of decisions: establish a workable starting creature, read the environment, take evolutions that solve immediate problems and preserve enough flexibility for the next threat.
- Choose a starting character and genetics. The genetics system affects your starting character, so compare the available starting options before launching a run. On a first attempt, favor a trait that makes the creature easy to control or hard to kill rather than a choice that only pays off after several specific evolutions.
- Learn what the current biome is asking of you. Each of the four biomes has its own rules, plants and animals. Look for the hazards that are actually limiting your movement or survival, then select an evolution that addresses that limitation. Do not assume an ability that was useful in one biome will remain the best choice in another.
- Build around a coherent function. An evolution can change how the creature attacks, travels or withstands danger. Keep a mental note of what your current build is good at and what it cannot do. A powerful attack is less useful if it leaves you unable to escape; a mobility trait may be the better choice when the environment is forcing constant repositioning.
- Investigate points of interest when the route is safe. Points of interest are part of the listed world structure. Treat them as opportunities to discover content or improve a run, but do not enter an unknown location at the worst possible moment. If a climate event or nearby enemy has already reduced your margin for error, stabilize first.
- Adapt to time and climate changes. The day/night cycle and climate events mean that the same area can demand different behavior later. Reassess visibility, movement and threat patterns instead of repeating the route you used earlier in the run.
- Prepare for the boss that appears. Bosses are variable, so a build that handles one encounter comfortably may have a bad matchup with another. Keep at least one reliable way to avoid damage and do not spend every useful option on short-term damage before you know what the next major encounter requires.
- Record discoveries and learn from the outcome. The Codex tracks discoveries and progression. Use it to identify what you have already encountered and to turn failed runs into information for the next starting choice. Endless runs and challenge scenarios give you reasons to keep testing builds after you understand the basic loop.
The exact controls, resource names and unlock conditions are not specified on the official store listing. If a tutorial prompt or an update changes a step, follow the current in-game explanation rather than relying on a generic control guide.
How to choose evolutions without chasing a “perfect” build
Because the game advertises 125+ abilities, a new player can waste a run by selecting impressive-looking traits that do not work together. Use a simple decision check each time an evolution is offered:
- What problem does this solve now? Choose an ability that fixes a current weakness—poor escape, fragile defenses, difficulty reaching targets or trouble navigating the biome—unless you have a clear reason to plan ahead.
- Does it reinforce the traits already installed? A movement-focused creature benefits from choices that let it keep distance or reposition. A close-range creature needs ways to survive contact long enough to use its damage. Mixing unrelated effects can leave you mediocre at everything.
- What will it cost? The listing establishes that abilities produce mechanically distinct creatures, but it does not provide a universal numerical ranking. Assume every choice has an opportunity cost and judge it by the situation in your run.
- Can the build function if the next offer is bad? Builds that require one particular evolution are risky in a variable roguelite. Prefer a foundation that works before its ideal follow-up appears.
| Approach | Useful when | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Mobility-first | You need to cross dangerous terrain, avoid contact or react quickly to climate and boss patterns. | Low staying power if you cannot create space or if an encounter limits movement. |
| Durability-first | You are learning enemy behavior or entering unfamiliar points of interest. | Survival alone may not solve a fight that requires damage or repositioning. |
| Offense-first | You can reliably reach targets and already understand the local threats. | A glass-cannon build can collapse when a variable boss or climate event removes its preferred range. |
These categories are decision aids, not named classes or guaranteed builds. The store listing emphasizes multiple play styles rather than prescribing one route.
Using the four biomes, events and bosses to your advantage
Biomes are rule changes, not just scenery
The four biomes are advertised as having their own flora, fauna and rules. That means you should enter a new area expecting the environment to change what “safe” means. Pause before committing to a fight and identify the local answer to three questions: where can the creature move, what can damage it from outside its preferred range and which terrain or environmental condition could interrupt an escape?

Climate events reward spare capacity
Climate events can alter the conditions under which your build operates. A creature that is barely functional in normal weather has no room to adapt when conditions shift. Keep at least one dependable movement or defensive option instead of spending every evolution on maximum damage. When an event begins, reassess the route and avoid treating the previous section of the biome as a permanent safe zone.
Day and night change your information
The day/night cycle is a strategic warning that visibility and encounter expectations may change over time. Use safer periods to explore or visit points of interest when possible, and avoid beginning an uncertain detour just before conditions shift. The listing does not document a universal day-versus-night modifier, so rely on what the current game communicates rather than assuming a particular bonus or penalty.
Variable bosses punish autopilot
Since bosses can vary between runs, save a reliable answer for an encounter you have not seen. Keep track of whether your build depends on staying close, maintaining distance or having a clear escape line. If a boss invalidates that plan, prioritize survival and repositioning over forcing the damage pattern you used previously.
Genetics, challenges, endless runs and the Codex
Starting-character genetics
Genetics shape the beginning of a run. Compare them by asking what they let you do consistently, not by choosing the most dramatic description. A predictable starting advantage is valuable while you are learning biomes and enemy behavior; once you understand the loop, you can test more specialized openings.
Challenge scenarios
Challenge scenarios are structured opportunities to test a constraint or a different style of play. Use them after you can explain why a normal run failed. Otherwise, a challenge may hide the actual lesson by adding another variable before you understand the basic systems.

Endless runs
Endless runs extend the experiment beyond a normal endpoint. They are useful for seeing how a build scales and where it eventually breaks, but they are not automatically the best place to learn every system. A shorter run can give you cleaner information about a single evolution choice or biome.

Codex progression
The Codex records discoveries and progression. Check it between attempts so that you know which creatures, environments or abilities you have already encountered. Treat it as a learning log: the value is not only completion, but also remembering which combinations produced a workable creature.
What a new player should expect from the difficulty
A roguelite run is supposed to make failure useful. You may lose because your evolution choices do not complement one another, because a biome exposes a movement weakness or because a variable boss counters the strategy you brought. That does not prove the game requires one hidden build. It means the next run should change one or two decisions while keeping the rest understandable.
- Change one major variable at a time so you can tell which evolution helped.
- Do not judge an ability only by its appearance; test whether it improves the specific situation that ended the previous run.
- When a route becomes unsafe, retreating or taking a longer path is a strategic choice, not wasted progress.
- Use the Codex and challenge content to broaden your options rather than repeatedly forcing one familiar creature.

What carcinization means in real biology
Carcinization is a form of convergent evolution in which non-crab crustaceans independently develop a crab-like body form. The key words are “convergent” and “independently”: separate lineages arrive at similar solutions rather than inheriting a crab body from one recent crab ancestor.
In an official game news description, carcinization is summarized as “a form of convergent evolution where non-crab crustaceans independently evolve into a crab-like body.” Javier Luque, a senior research associate and crustacean curator at the University of Cambridge, gave a broader explanation in an NPR interview published September 18, 2024: “Convergent evolution is the processes through which organisms that are not directly related to one another start looking alike and resembling each other, mostly because of similar lifestyles and dietary habits, and also how the environment and the lifestyle is selecting or seeking for such forms.”

Why the crab shape can recur
The familiar crab body is relatively flattened and sturdy, with front claws, four pairs of walking legs and a small tail tucked beneath the body. Luque contrasts that form with the large muscular tail associated with lobster- and shrimp-like bodies, which is useful for swimming. A crab-like form can support movement and life in other environments, but that is an evolutionary interpretation, not a promise that the form is best everywhere.

When similar pressures occur in separate crustacean lineages, similar body plans can emerge. The resemblance does not mean the animals are closely related or that evolution is aiming at a predetermined endpoint.
How often has it happened?
Luque told NPR that carcinization has occurred at least five times in the past 180 million years. The qualifier matters: it is a minimum reported in that interview, not a claim that exactly five events are known forever.
The same interview reports at least seven instances of decarcinization, in which a lineage loses or substantially departs from a crab-like form. Those reversals show that crab-like anatomy is not an irreversible destination. Evolution can favor a different shape when conditions change.
How many crab species are known?
In the NPR interview, Luque estimated approximately 7,500 living crab species and approximately 3,500 fossil crab species—roughly 10,000 to 11,000 known fossil and living species in total. These are attributed estimates from that 2024 interview, rather than a definitive census.

No. The phrase is a joke built on a real but narrow pattern among crustaceans. Carcinization does not predict that every organism, every animal or every human will become a crab. Humans are not on a demonstrated evolutionary path toward a crab body, and the cited evidence concerns repeated body-form changes within crustacean lineages.

Even among crustaceans, the pattern is not one-way. The reported decarcinization events show that a crab-like form can be lost when another body plan better fits a lineage’s circumstances. Luque explicitly cautioned against treating crab form as universally ideal: “I don’t think crabs will be the answer to all forms.”

| Evolution choices can rapidly create a mechanically and visually different creature during a run. | Evolution acts across generations in populations; it is not an instant menu selection. |
| The title exaggerates the idea that every organism ends up as a crab. | Carcinization describes repeated crab-like forms in non-crab crustaceans, not all life. |
| Runs encourage experimentation with many abilities and outcomes. | Convergent evolution reflects environmental and lifestyle pressures, with no guaranteed endpoint. |
| Crab-like traits can be a fun goal or obstacle in a run. | Decarcinization demonstrates that lineages can move away from crab-like anatomy. |
Game fiction versus scientific claim
The most useful way to read the title is as a playful premise layered over a genuine evolutionary concept. The game turns adaptation into a visible, controllable system so that each run can ask what happens when a creature takes a different path. Biology supplies the inspiration, but the game’s abilities, biomes, bosses and progression are designed for play rather than as a simulation of real evolutionary timescales.
That distinction also explains why the premise works. “Everything becomes a crab” is funny because carcinization really has happened repeatedly, yet the scientific version is more interesting than the meme: similar forms can arise independently, can be advantageous in some environments, and can later be abandoned.

The game’s 125+ listed abilities, four biomes, challenges and endless mode provide room to experiment.
“Everything becomes a crab” is the game’s comic question, not a scientific law. Carcinization is a real example of convergent evolution among crustaceans, documented at least five times in the past 180 million years according to Javier Luque’s 2024 NPR interview, but the same source reports at least seven reversals. In the game and in nature, adaptation is about fit—not an inevitable final shape.
