Everything Is Crab Builds: How Physical, Ability, and Hybrid Choices Work

Physical and Ability are damage-scaling choices in Everything Is Crab, not fixed character classes. Physical determines damage from physical attacks, while Ability determines damage from Ability effects. A direct attack such as Horns generally points toward Physical investment; ranged or poison-style effects are examples of an Ability direction in a secondary build guide. Trunk is the important exception: that guide says it uses whichever value is lower, Physical or Ability, so raising only one stat can leave its damage limited.

There is no official, current ranking showing that one route always wins. Your best choice depends on the attack or evolution offered, how reliably you can land it, and whether you can stay fed, mobile and safe long enough to use it. The framework below explains the confirmed stat rules, the guide-based examples, and a practical way to choose during a run.

What Physical and Ability mean

The game’s attribute guide gives the basic distinction:

  • Physical: determines damage from physical attacks.
  • Ability: determines damage from Ability effects.

Those definitions tell you what each stat scales, but they do not by themselves classify every evolution. A build label describes the source of your damage. It does not guarantee a particular range, animation, safety level or set of available upgrades.

For example, a close-range attack can be a poor choice even when its damage uses Physical if you cannot reach prey without taking too much risk. Conversely, an Ability effect is not automatically safe simply because it can be used from farther away; its effect pattern may require you to remain in danger, wait for a cooldown or keep targets in a particular area. The attack attached to your current evolution is therefore more important than the label alone.

Physical builds: direct damage and contact risk

What a Physical build is trying to do

A Physical direction concentrates on attacks whose damage is classified as physical. The secondary guide cited for the game discusses Trunk and Horns when describing physical builds, although Trunk has a hybrid rule and should not be treated as a pure Physical evolution. The practical idea is straightforward: select a direct attack you can connect consistently, then make the rest of the build help you reach targets, survive contact and escape when the engagement turns bad.

Physical is attractive when the offered attack rewards decisive positioning. You can often understand the question in concrete terms: can the attack connect with the prey you want, and can you leave before the surrounding ecosystem overwhelms you? If the answer is yes, Physical investment supports the damage source you are already using. If the answer is no, a higher displayed stat will not solve the positioning problem by itself.

How to evaluate a physical attack

  • Connection reliability: Prefer an attack whose range, timing and direction you can use repeatedly. The guide’s recommendation to choose an attack that can connect consistently is more useful than choosing an evolution solely because its label sounds strong.
  • Exposure: Direct attacks generally put you closer to danger. Account for the time spent approaching, attacking and withdrawing, not just the hit itself.
  • Movement support: Movement helps you close distance, avoid retaliatory contact and reposition when another creature enters the fight.
  • Sustain and food access: A successful hit does not help if the engagement leaves you unable to feed or recover. Keep a reliable food option available before committing to a difficult target.
  • Location: Fight where you have room to maneuver and a clear retreat. A narrow or crowded area can turn a favorable Physical attack into an avoidable loss.

Horns and the limits of examples

The secondary guide names Horns as a Physical-oriented example. That is useful as a build illustration, not as a universal rule that every Horns configuration, every patch or every direct attack must be Physical. Use the game’s actual attack description and the stat behavior shown in your run to confirm what you are scaling. The same caution applies to the guide’s other examples: they describe recommended directions, not an official taxonomy of every evolution.

Ability builds: effects, range and uptime

What an Ability build is trying to do

An Ability direction invests around damage produced by Ability effects. The secondary guide uses ranged and poison-style attacks as examples. These examples suggest a common practical advantage: you may be able to influence a target without making the same kind of direct contact required by a close attack. They do not establish that every ranged or poison effect scales with Ability, so verify the attack’s classification rather than inferring it from appearance.

Ability builds are often judged by uptime: how reliably the effect can be applied, how long it remains useful and whether you can keep using it while moving. A projectile that misses, a poison effect that cannot be applied safely or an ability that leaves you trapped in a bad location can erase the theoretical value of the stat you selected.

How to evaluate an Ability attack

  • Effect pattern: Determine whether the attack is a single hit, a persistent effect or a repeatable ranged action. The pattern affects how you approach prey and when you disengage.
  • Distance and line of attack: More distance can reduce contact risk, but only if you have sightlines and enough room to retreat. Do not treat “ranged” as a guarantee of safety.
  • Application reliability: An Ability build needs a practical way to land or apply its effect. Check whether targets move out of the effect or whether you must remain nearby to maintain pressure.
  • Movement while attacking: Movement remains a survival stat in practice. You may need to circle, kite, or retreat while waiting for another use of the effect.
  • Sustain and food safety: Ranged pressure does not replace feeding and recovery. Pair the effect with a route to food and a safe place to fight.

Poison and ranged examples are guide advice

The poison and ranged examples come from a secondary build guide rather than an official statement that all such effects use Ability. Treat them as starting points when an evolution is offered, then check the attack’s displayed behavior and scaling in your current version. If the game does not clearly identify the scaling, avoid assuming that an effect’s visual style proves its stat.

Trunk: the hybrid exception

Trunk matters because it does not reward a one-stat approach in the cited guide. Its damage uses the lower of your Physical and Ability values. In simplified form:

Trunk damage scaling = min(Physical, Ability)

If Physical is 12 and Ability is 7, Trunk is limited by 7; raising Physical alone does not remove that bottleneck. If Ability is the lower value, investing only in Ability produces the same kind of limitation from the other side. The practical consequence is that a player choosing Trunk should watch both values and avoid allowing either one to fall far behind the other.

When Trunk changes your decision

  • Do not read Trunk as a pure Physical choice. Its direct appearance does not override the lower-stat rule described above.
  • Compare opportunity cost. A choice that raises only Physical may be attractive for another attack but less useful while Trunk is your main damage source.
  • Reassess after an evolution offer. If a later option clearly favors one stat, decide whether you are switching away from Trunk or continuing a balanced plan.
  • Keep survival in view. Balancing two stats is not a reason to take an unsafe fight. A lower damage ceiling is preferable to losing the run while chasing an upgrade.

Physical vs. Ability at a glance

Decision point Physical direction Ability direction
What scales Damage from physical attacks. Damage from Ability effects.
Guide-based examples Horns is named as a Physical example; Trunk is mentioned in the same discussion but is hybrid under the lower-stat rule. Poison and ranged attacks are cited as Ability-oriented examples.
Typical tactical question Can you reach the target, connect reliably and escape contact? Can you apply the effect consistently while preserving distance and movement?
Main practical risk Exposure while approaching or staying in attack range. Missed or poorly timed effects, plus the false assumption that range guarantees safety.
Support that matters Movement, food safety, sustain and a location with a clear retreat. Movement, food safety, sustain and enough space to maintain the effect.
Hybrid caveat Trunk uses the lower of Physical and Ability in the cited guide, so either stat can limit it.

How to choose during a run

Everything Is Crab is an evolution roguelite, so the ideal plan has to respond to what the game actually offers. A build that would be excellent in theory may not be available, while an apparently modest evolution may be the only option that fits your current stats and survival route. Use this sequence whenever you receive an attack or evolution choice.

  1. Identify the damage source. Read the attack or evolution description and determine whether its damage is Physical or Ability. Do not infer the answer only from whether the animation looks close-range, ranged or poisonous.
  2. Check for a hybrid rule. If the option is Trunk, remember that the lower of Physical and Ability governs its scaling in the cited guide. A one-sided investment can leave the attack constrained.
  3. Test connection conditions. Ask what must happen for the attack to work: contact, a line of sight, a projectile hit, an effect applied at a location or repeated use. Select the option you can execute consistently, not merely the one with the most attractive description.
  4. Map the engagement. Before hunting, identify where you will approach, where food is available and where you will retreat. The guide specifically recommends combining a main attack with food safety, movement, sustain and a safe fight location.
  5. Match the stat to the attack you will actually use. If you have committed to a Physical attack, Physical investment is meaningful only when that attack remains your reliable source of damage. If the new evolution changes your damage source, reconsider the stat direction rather than continuing automatically.
  6. Reassess after every major change. An evolution can change your range, contact risk or ability to disengage. Recheck whether the current stat, attack and survival plan still fit together.

Survival support is part of the build

The Physical-versus-Ability decision is not just a damage calculation. The cited guide’s practical recommendation is to combine a main attack with four forms of support: food safety, movement, sustain and a safe fight location. These supports determine whether you can use your chosen scaling repeatedly.

Food safety

Plan how you will eat before starting a fight. A target that leaves you stranded away from safe food can be a bad target even if your attack connects. Keep an accessible option in mind and avoid spending your last safe route on a marginal engagement.

Movement

Movement serves both build directions. Physical attacks use it to close distance and retreat; Ability attacks use it to preserve space, reposition and avoid threats while an effect is applied. Treat movement as part of the attack’s operating requirement rather than a separate luxury.

Sustain

Sustain is whatever lets you remain functional through repeated encounters, including access to recovery or a way to avoid taking unnecessary damage. The evidence available for this game does not establish a particular sustain value or universal upgrade order, so judge each option by whether it helps you survive the encounters you can realistically take.

Safe fight location

Choose terrain and space that let you see danger and leave the encounter. This is especially important for a contact-oriented Physical attack, but Ability effects also fail when you are cornered or forced to fight in a crowded area. If the location removes your retreat, change locations instead of assuming a higher stat will compensate.

Common build mistakes and corrections

Mistake: treating the labels as classes

Physical and Ability describe scaling, not permanent classes with fixed weapons or routes. Correction: start with the attack you can use reliably, then invest in the stat that actually scales it.

Mistake: assuming every ranged or poison attack is Ability

Those are examples from a secondary guide, not a complete official classification. Correction: confirm the attack’s scaling in its description or attribute information before committing your upgrades.

Mistake: building Trunk as Physical only

Under the cited guide’s rule, Trunk uses the lower stat. Correction: monitor both Physical and Ability, and recognize that whichever is lower is the immediate limitation.

Mistake: choosing damage without a retreat

A high-scaling attack that cannot be landed safely is not a dependable build. Correction: pair the attack with movement, food access, sustain and a location that permits disengagement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake: forcing a planned evolution

Roguelite choices are constrained by what appears. Correction: adapt to the offered evolution and preserve a workable damage-and-survival loop instead of waiting for an ideal option that may not arrive.

What is and is not known about balance

No official current comparison establishes that Physical or Ability is universally stronger, and no verified source provides a win rate, damage benchmark or higher-difficulty ranking for the two directions. Official patch notes comparing their present balance were not identified in the material available for this guide. Exact performance can therefore change with updates, attack availability and player execution.

The defensible conclusion is conditional: choose Physical when a physical attack is your most reliable way to deal damage; choose Ability when an Ability effect gives you a repeatable, survivable way to pressure targets; and treat Trunk as a hybrid that is limited by the weaker stat. If an update changes an attack’s scaling or an evolution’s behavior, the in-game description and current patch information should take precedence over older build advice.

Game and release context

Everything is Crab: The Animal Evolution Roguelite is listed on Steam as a single-player PC game developed by Odd Dreams Digital and published by Secret Mode, with a listed release date of May 8, 2026. A launch announcement describes the PC release through Steam and the Epic Games Store. Storefront availability and descriptions can change, so check the current listing for the latest platform information.

The official Steam description summarizes the intended loop as: “Hunt, Flee, Scavenge and Thrive in a living ecosystem.” That wording matches the build decision’s real priority: damage scaling matters, but fleeing, scavenging and choosing survivable fights determine whether the scaling gets used.
