Short answer: Everything Is Crab captures the most appealing part of Spore—the idea of shaping a strange animal as it survives and changes—but it is not a full spiritual successor to Spore. It is a focused, single-player action roguelite built around repeated ecosystem runs, feeding, combat, evasion and trait selection.
Odd Dreams Digital developed the game and Secret Mode published it for PC on Steam and the Epic Games Store on May 8, 2026. The developer explicitly cites Spore’s early creature phases as a core inspiration. That makes the comparison fair at the creature-evolution level, not at the level of Spore’s entire multi-stage simulation.

What Everything Is Crab actually is
Everything Is Crab begins with an amorphous creature in a living ecosystem. You search for food, survive threats, gain levels and choose evolutionary traits that change how the creature handles danger and opportunity. Each attempt is a run rather than one continuous campaign, so the central question is not simply how to make one perfect animal. It is how to adapt a new build to the ecosystem in front of you.

You can hunt, scavenge, avoid fights, exploit safer environmental niches or build a creature that can stand its ground. Official descriptions present more than 125 abilities and specialisations, while the launch announcement separately lists more than 100 evolutions, more than 20 specialisations and over 200 starting-build combinations. Those figures come from the store and publisher rather than an independent audit, and the categories overlap, so they should be read as indicators of intended breadth rather than a promise of 345 completely separate options.

The title’s joke is also its design premise: everything is on a path toward becoming a crab. Crab-like traits are not merely cosmetic. They feed into a carcinisation value that affects the run’s difficulty and the appearance of better-quality food. The result is a risk-and-reward system in which leaning harder into crab traits can make the world more dangerous while improving the incentives for continuing.
How a run works
1. Start with a vulnerable creature
You begin as an amorphous animal rather than a finished species. That starting point matters because the run is about responding to circumstances. The game does not ask you to design every detail before entering the world; it gives you a creature that has to earn its next advantages through survival.
2. Feed to gain levels
Food is the immediate currency of progression. Finding and consuming it raises your level and creates opportunities to select traits. Because food exists inside the ecosystem rather than in a menu detached from play, movement, risk assessment and route choice are part of character development. A safer food source may let a fragile build grow steadily, while a dangerous area may offer a faster route to power.

Trait choices gradually turn the amorphous starter into a specialised creature. The available options are intended to support different patterns of play rather than one mandatory evolutionary ladder. PC Gamer’s launch review describes builds ranging from agile precision fighters to tougher brawlers, while the official copy also emphasizes predation, scavenging and evasion.
4. Adapt to enemies and environmental pressure
Survival is broader than defeating every hostile creature. Hunting can provide food but exposes you to combat; scavenging can reduce direct confrontation but may require careful positioning; fleeing preserves a run when a fight is unfavorable. The ecosystem therefore acts as a decision engine. You are constantly weighing the value of a meal, the danger of reaching it and the way your current traits handle the surrounding threats.

5. Treat failure as information
Permanent stat upgrades do not carry over between runs, according to the developer. The intended lasting progression is knowledge: learning how the ecosystem behaves, what particular evolutions do and which enemies punish a given approach. That structure makes each restart a new experiment instead of a continuation of an ever-growing numerical advantage.
Carcinisation is both the joke and a mechanic
Carcinisation is the game’s central conceit: unrelated organisms are imagined as repeatedly developing crab-like characteristics. Everything Is Crab uses that idea playfully, not as a scientific demonstration. The available descriptions do not establish a scientific model of evolution, and the game should not be read as evidence that real organisms follow a universal path toward crab forms.
Recommended Free Tools
In gameplay terms, crab traits contribute to a carcinisation value. PC Gamer reports that increasing this value raises difficulty while also increasing the spawn rate of higher-quality food. That creates a deliberate tension. The same evolutionary direction that makes later survival harder can improve the quality of the rewards available in the ecosystem.
This system gives the title more structure than a purely visual crab gag. Choosing a crab-oriented trait has consequences for the run’s economy and danger level. A player who wants a calmer, more evasive attempt may avoid pushing that value quickly; a player who is confident in combat may accept the extra pressure in exchange for better food opportunities. The mechanic also reinforces the game’s theme without pretending that the joke is a biological rule.
What the build variety means in practice
Predator builds
A predatory approach treats other creatures as both threats and resources. It can accelerate feeding when the build is strong enough to win fights, but it also places you in situations where damage, positioning and enemy behavior matter. The attraction is momentum: successful hunts can make the next trait choice arrive sooner. The cost is that every aggressive encounter can end a run before the build reaches its intended form.

Scavenger builds
Scavenging emphasizes opportunity rather than dominance. You look for food left by the ecosystem and choose routes that reduce unnecessary confrontations. This style suits players who enjoy reading a space and exploiting what is available instead of forcing every encounter. Its limitation is dependence on the quality and location of available resources; a cautious route can become inefficient if it produces too little food.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsEvasion-focused builds
Evasion treats survival itself as the primary objective. Rather than turning every advantage into offensive power, you can select traits that help a creature remain mobile or avoid unfavorable fights. This approach highlights the game’s claim that adaptation is not synonymous with becoming the strongest combatant. It also makes route planning important, because escaping one threat can place you in another part of the ecosystem with different risks.
Why the option count needs context
The headline numbers—more than 125 abilities and specialisations, over 100 evolutions, more than 20 specialisations and over 200 starting combinations—suggest a large design space. They do not guarantee that every option produces a radically different experience. Some choices may fill related roles, and the value of a trait depends on the enemies, food and environmental conditions encountered in a run. The meaningful measure is whether the combinations encourage different decisions, not whether the menu contains a large number.
Is it really a spiritual successor to Spore?
The strongest connection is specific: Everything Is Crab is inspired by the experience of evolving an animal during Spore’s early phases. In a Steam Community Q&A, game director Denis said, “I love Spore, but I don’t feel the execution was ideal, and the first and second phases were the only ones that gave you a feel of evolving your own animal.” That explains why the comparison exists and also why it should be kept narrow.
| Comparison point | Everything Is Crab | Spore comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Focused action roguelite runs in an ecosystem | Broader multi-stage evolution and simulation structure |
| Creature authorship | Select traits and specialisations during a run | Creature creation and progression within a larger game framework |
| Progression shape | Repeated runs with no permanent stat upgrades carrying over | A broader progression structure rather than run-based resets |
| Survival and combat | Feed, hunt, scavenge, fight or evade according to the current build | Creature evolution is part of a wider sequence of game phases |
| Replay value | Build experimentation and adaptation to ecosystem conditions | Variety comes from the larger creation and progression system |
PC Gamer calls Everything Is Crab an action roguelike inspired by Spore’s creature phase and says it is nowhere near as ambitious as Spore. That is a useful distinction, not a contradiction. The newer game concentrates on one appealing idea—making an animal and learning how it survives—and turns that idea into short, repeatable runs. It does not attempt to reproduce Spore’s full ambition.

What the launch review liked
PC Gamer’s May 8, 2026 review gave the game 72/100 and praised its creativity and unusual ecosystem ideas. The review’s positive case is easy to understand: the game combines a memorable theme with a system that lets feeding, evolution and environmental danger affect one another. It offers a fresh angle on the roguelite format instead of presenting another run-based combat game with a superficial animal skin.
The most interesting decisions arise when the ecosystem is treated as a set of relationships. Food is not simply experience placed along a path, and enemies are not merely obstacles to clear. Choosing when to attack, when to flee and which trait to take can change the conditions of the next part of the run.
Where the same structure can wear thin
The review also criticized the pace of trait acquisition and the limited, slow-feeling meta-progression. If a run delivers new traits rapidly but those choices do not remain meaningful for long, level-ups can begin to feel repetitive rather than transformative. The absence of permanent stat upgrades means that players who expect a steadily accumulating power curve may find restarts less rewarding.
That criticism is one reviewer’s assessment, not a universal consensus. It does identify the key trade-off in the design. Everything Is Crab prioritizes experimentation and learning over an ever-expanding account-wide arsenal. The game may be most satisfying when you enjoy discovering how a build interacts with the ecosystem, and less satisfying when you want a roguelite whose long-term progression steadily removes early-game friction.

Visual identity and the “pixelated” question
The title’s description of a pixelated form is an editorial characterization rather than a technical fact established by the available material. Official descriptions refer to creature visuals and component sprites, but they do not provide a precise classification of the rendering style as pixel art. It is safer to judge the visual presentation from current gameplay footage or the live store pages than to assume a particular pixel-art specification from the name alone.
What is clear is that the game uses a deliberately stylized creature presentation to support its modular evolution premise. The visual appeal comes from seeing an initially amorphous organism acquire recognizable traits and move toward the game’s crab-themed endpoint. The exact pixel density or rendering technique is less important to the design than the readability of those changes during a run.

Verdict
Everything Is Crab earns the Spore comparison by isolating the creature-evolution fantasy and rebuilding it as an action roguelite. Its best ideas are tightly connected: food drives growth, traits define the way you survive, the ecosystem makes every route a calculation and crab-focused evolution changes the pressure of the run. That is a coherent, unusual design rather than a broad simulation.
Its limitations come from the same focus. The game is much smaller in scope than Spore, and the lack of permanent stat upgrades plus concerns about repetitive trait acquisition may limit its appeal as an endless roguelite. The fairest expectation is a novel single-player experiment that is close to Spore’s creature phase, not a replacement for Spore’s entire ambition.
