Many players and media outlets call it “PSSR 2” or “PSSR 2.0,” but Sony’s own announcements generally describe it as upgraded PSSR or improved PSSR.
The technology uses a different neural network and reconstruction algorithm to improve fine-detail clarity, image stability, and motion reconstruction. It can help developers balance visual quality and frame rate, but it is not a universal PS5 Pro upgrade, does not add frame generation, and does not guarantee 4K output or 60fps in every game.

What is PSSR?
PSSR stands for PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution. It is Sony’s machine-learning-based image-reconstruction technology for PS5 Pro. Rather than rendering every pixel of the final output at full resolution, a game can render internally at a lower resolution and use PSSR to reconstruct a sharper, higher-resolution image.

Sony describes PSSR as an AI library that analyzes game images pixel by pixel while upscaling them. In practice, reconstruction can also use information from previous frames, motion data, depth data, and other rendering inputs to preserve detail over time.
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
- Native rendering: The game renders the target image directly at the chosen resolution.
- Upscaling: A lower-resolution image is enlarged to the display output resolution.
- Temporal reconstruction: Current and previous frames, plus motion and scene data, are used to rebuild detail and stabilize the image.
- PSSR: Sony’s proprietary, machine-learning-assisted reconstruction system designed for PS5 Pro.
The advantage is that a developer may spend fewer GPU resources on internal resolution and use the savings elsewhere: higher frame rates, ray tracing, denser effects, better shadows, or more stable performance. The resulting image is not the same as native 4K rendering, even if it looks close at normal viewing distances.
Is “PSSR 2” the official name?
Terminology: Sony generally calls the technology an “upgraded version of PSSR” or “improved PSSR.” “PSSR 2” and “PSSR 2.0” are common shorthand, not a consistently established Sony product name.
This distinction matters because Sony has not published a public version-numbering system comparable to the names used for technologies such as DLSS or FSR. This article uses “PSSR 2” because it is the term readers are likely to encounter, while treating upgraded PSSR as Sony’s safer official wording.

What changed in the upgraded PSSR?
Sony says the new version uses a substantially different neural network and overall reconstruction algorithm. Its stated goals include:
- More stable image detail during camera movement.
- Clearer small and fine geometry.
- Improved temporal consistency and motion stability.
- Better reconstruction of detail from lower-resolution inputs.
- More flexibility for developers choosing between image quality and performance.
That can mean less shimmering on foliage, fences, wires, hair, and other thin geometry, as well as fewer moments where detail breaks apart or changes noticeably between frames. Reflections, particles, and transparencies can also benefit when a game supplies suitable inputs.
However, Sony has not disclosed a complete consumer-facing technical specification. Details such as model size, training data, exact input buffers, memory requirements, latency, and universal processing cost remain undisclosed. There is also no guarantee that every game will show the same improvement.
Project Amethyst and AMD FSR 4
Sony says the upgraded PSSR work comes from its Project Amethyst collaboration with AMD. Sony also describes the technology as related to AMD’s FSR 4 upscaling technology.
That does not mean PSSR 2 and FSR 4 are identical products. AMD’s FSR 4 is a PC-facing implementation, while PSSR is integrated into the PS5 Pro software and hardware environment. Shared research, algorithms, or development lineage do not establish that the two use identical binaries, feature sets, input requirements, or performance characteristics.
A report from PC Gamer described the newer PSSR as sharing a core with AMD’s FSR Redstone/FSR 4 family. That is useful context, but it should not be read as proof that PS5 Pro’s implementation can be installed on PC or that every AMD graphics card receives PSSR technology.
When did PSSR 2 launch?
- February 27, 2026: Sony announced the upgraded PSSR and said it would roll out globally to PS5 Pro players in the following weeks. Resident Evil Requiem was identified as the first named game using it. Sony’s announcement
- March 16, 2026: Sony announced broader support through a PS5 system-software update, along with the optional “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” setting for compatible PS5 Pro games that already support PSSR. Sony’s rollout announcement
The rollout applies to PS5 Pro players. Standard PS5 owners do not receive PSSR, although individual games may use their own reconstruction techniques.
How to enable the PSSR image-quality enhancement
PS5 Pro owners should install the latest system software and update the relevant game. Sony added an optional system setting called “Enhance PSSR Image Quality.” The exact menu path and wording can vary with system-software revisions, so check the current option under the PS5 Pro’s display or game-related settings rather than relying on an outdated guide.
The setting does not add PSSR to a game that never implemented it. It also does not necessarily force every graphics mode to use the upgraded algorithm. A title may use different reconstruction paths in performance, quality, ray-tracing, or other modes.
To compare the result, use the same game mode and scene with the option enabled and disabled. Watch a camera pan rather than relying only on a paused screenshot. Fine geometry, foliage, reflections, hair, particles, and moving objects are often more revealing than a static menu screen.
A report from PlayStation LifeStyle, citing a Digital Foundry interview, said the toggle may not automatically move to every future PSSR revision and that some games instead received backend updates replacing older implementations. Treat that as reported behavior rather than a universal Sony-published rule.
Games announced with upgraded-PSSR support
Sony’s March announcement named the following games in connection with the upgraded technology. This is a rollout snapshot, not a guaranteed permanent master compatibility list. Current game patches and individual graphics modes can change how support works.

Other PS5 Pro games may support the original PSSR, another reconstruction method, or no PSSR at all. A game can also receive PS5 Pro enhancements without using PSSR.
What should players see in supported games?
Fine detail and thin geometry
The most likely improvements are cleaner fences, wires, leaves, hair, distant geometry, and other details that are difficult to reconstruct from a low-resolution input. Better temporal stability should reduce distracting shimmer and breakup.

Motion clarity
Upscaling quality must be judged while the camera moves. A paused image can look sharp while motion reveals crawling edges, ghosting, or unstable detail. Sony specifically highlights improved motion stability, so camera pans and traversal are important comparison tests.
Reflections, particles, and transparencies
These effects remain difficult for reconstruction systems. Upgraded PSSR may preserve them more consistently, but artifacts can still appear around smoke, foliage, hair, water, glass, and fast-moving objects.
Performance modes
A developer may use the improved reconstruction to lower internal resolution while retaining more perceived detail. That can make a performance mode look closer to a quality mode, or leave more GPU headroom for ray tracing and effects. It does not automatically change the mode’s frame-rate target.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does PSSR 2 increase frame rate?
Potentially and indirectly, but not automatically. Rendering fewer internal pixels can free GPU resources for a higher frame rate, ray tracing, shadows, effects, or improved frame pacing. The developer must decide how to spend those resources.
PSSR cannot remove a CPU bottleneck, override a 30fps cap, redesign a game’s engine, or guarantee a 60fps mode. A game may look clearer at the same frame rate, run faster with reduced internal resolution, or show little performance change at all.
Do not confuse image reconstruction with frame generation. PSSR reconstructs pixels for rendered frames; it is not a system-wide frame-generation feature.

No. Support falls into several separate categories:
- Games using the original PSSR.
- Games natively updated by developers for upgraded PSSR.
- Games that can use the system-level enhancement setting because they already support PSSR.
- Games using another reconstruction method.
- Games with PS5 Pro enhancements but no PSSR.
- Unpatched games receiving no meaningful PSSR benefit.
The PS5 Pro product page presents PSSR alongside ray tracing and high-frame-rate capabilities, but individual game and graphics-mode support remains title-dependent.
Limitations and common misunderstandings
- It is not native 4K: PSSR reconstructs a higher-resolution output from a lower-resolution render.
- It is not universal: Unsupported games cannot gain full PSSR support simply because they run on PS5 Pro.
- It cannot fix every artifact: Poor assets, bad anti-aliasing inputs, animation problems, CPU limits, and problematic motion vectors can remain.
- Sharper is not always better: Oversharpening or unstable fine detail may be more distracting than a softer image.
- Modes can differ: Performance and fidelity modes may use different internal resolutions, algorithms, or settings.
- Display matters: Differences are easier to see on a good 4K, high-refresh display than on a small or distant 1080p screen.
- Performance can vary: An image-quality enhancement may carry a performance cost in some implementations. Judge the specific game and mode.
Why a screenshot may not show the improvement
PSSR’s benefits are often temporal. A compressed screenshot may hide shimmer, crawling edges, and detail breakup that become obvious during movement. For a fair comparison, use the same output settings, graphics mode, camera movement, and scene.
Unnecessary TV sharpening and motion processing can also mask or exaggerate differences. Keep display processing consistent, and compare both image quality and frame pacing rather than choosing whichever paused frame looks sharper.
Should you buy a PS5 Pro for PSSR 2?
Existing PS5 Pro owners
Update the console and supported games, then test the enhancement setting in the titles you actually play. The benefit is strongest when a game uses a lower internal resolution, offers a demanding performance mode, or has visible instability in foliage, reflections, and fine geometry.
Players with a 4K, high-refresh display
This is the strongest use case. A suitable 4K display can make reconstruction and motion improvements easier to notice, particularly in supported PS5 Pro games where you want higher frame rates without giving up as much visual detail.
Players with a 1080p 60Hz display
The practical benefit is likely weaker. PS5 Pro may still improve selected games, but PSSR’s most visible advantages are easier to appreciate at higher output resolutions and during high-refresh motion.
Players whose favorite games lack PSSR support
Do not buy the console for PSSR alone. Consider the game’s complete PS5 Pro patch, ray-tracing improvements, frame-rate targets, and existing compatibility. Waiting is sensible if the titles you play have not received meaningful support.
The official PS5 Pro product page is the appropriate place to check current product details and availability. Pricing, bundles, regional stock, and promotions can change, so they should be verified at the time of purchase.
The bottom line on PSSR 2
Sony’s upgraded PSSR is a meaningful evolution of the PS5 Pro’s reconstruction technology, with a new neural network and algorithm aimed at more stable detail and clearer motion. “PSSR 2” is useful shorthand, but upgraded PSSR is the more accurate official description.
Its value depends on implementation. It can make supported performance modes look cleaner and give developers more room to balance resolution, frame rate, ray tracing, and effects. It cannot upgrade every PS5 game, guarantee 60fps, create native 4K, or replace a game-specific patch. For buyers, it is best treated as one part of the PS5 Pro’s case—not a standalone reason for every PS5 owner to upgrade.
