Vecna: Eve of Ruin is a Dungeons & Dragons campaign for high-level characters, officially spanning levels 10–20. It begins in Neverwinter and sends the party across the multiverse to stop Vecna from reshaping existence. Along the way, the heroes work with three archmages and seek to rebuild the Rod of Seven Parts.

What is Vecna: Eve of Ruin?

Vecna: Eve of Ruin is an official Dungeons & Dragons adventure built around a multiverse-spanning threat. Vecna is preparing a secret-powered ritual to remake the universe. After encountering his cult in Neverwinter, the characters become linked to Vecna and pursue the pieces of the Rod of Seven Parts with help from three archmages. The campaign culminates in an attempt to stop the ritual at its center.

The publisher’s product description frames it as a high-stakes campaign across multiple settings and planes. Its setting roster includes material associated with Planescape, Spelljammer, Eberron, Ravenloft, Dragonlance, and Greyhawk. It is a tabletop roleplaying adventure, not a standalone video game.

What level is the adventure, and where does it start?

The official campaign range is levels 10–20, and the usual starting point is level 10. D&D Beyond’s Dungeon Master overview says the opening chapter can be adjusted for characters at levels 7, 8, or 9. Level 11 characters can also begin, but they do not gain a level at the end of chapter one. The campaign is designed for the party to reach level 20 by the end.

What worlds and planes does the party visit?

The adventure opens in Neverwinter, in the Forgotten Realms. Its chapter progression then moves through Sigil, the Astral Sea, Eberron, Barovia, Krynn, Oerth, Avernus, and Pandesmos before returning to Sigil and Neverwinter. The breadth is central to the premise: the characters move between established D&D worlds and planes rather than staying in one region.

Can you play it after another D&D campaign?

D&D Beyond names several published campaigns that can lead into Eve of Ruin:

  • Curse of Strahd
  • Dragon of Icespire Peak, followed by Storm Lord’s Wrath and Sleeping Dragon’s Wake
  • Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden
  • Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk
  • Storm King’s Thunder
  • The Wild Beyond the Witchlight

Some of those campaigns reach level 12, but D&D Beyond notes they can be concluded at level 11. The Dungeon Master overview also says characters from other realms can join the story if the group gives them a reason to arrive in Neverwinter. A previous campaign is therefore a possible bridge, not a requirement.

Is there a prequel?

Vecna: Nest of the Eldritch Eye is a level 3 one-shot prequel that introduces Neverwinter and the Whispered One’s cultists. D&D Beyond’s overview says it became separately purchasable after Eve of Ruin was released. It is an optional lower-level introduction, not the level range for the main campaign.

What should a group consider before starting?

Before choosing the campaign, a group should decide whether its characters are ready for high-level play and whether it wants a story that jumps between multiple settings and planes. The official material also makes prior campaign continuity flexible: a listed adventure can provide a route into the story, but characters from elsewhere can be brought to Neverwinter with an in-world reason.

The Dungeon Master overview contains plot details and explicitly warns of spoilers. Players who want to preserve surprises should avoid reading that overview; the publisher’s product description offers a higher-level premise.
