Path of Exile 2 is a standalone action RPG sequel from Grinding Gear Games, not an expansion that replaces the original Path of Exile. The key things to check before starting are whether you can access the current build, whether your platform is supported, and whether you want to play solo, locally with someone beside you, or online with a group. The sources available here document Early Access and several later league details, but do not establish the game’s live release status or current price as of October 8, 2026; check the official game and platform listings before making a purchase.

What is Path of Exile 2?

Path of Exile 2 is a separate action RPG developed by Grinding Gear Games. The PlayStation Blog described it as a distinct game rather than an update to the first Path of Exile. It is built around campaign progression and a substantial endgame, with solo and multiplayer play among its options.

At the start of Early Access in 2024, the developer described the game as having three campaign acts, an endgame, 50 bosses, and around 400 monster types. Those numbers describe the launch-era Early Access scope, not a confirmed count for the current build. A 2024 PlayStation preview also referred to 12 character classes and 1,500 passive skill nodes; those preview figures likewise should not be treated as a current roster or system specification.

Is Path of Exile 2 free?

The available official sources do not establish the current price or release status as of October 8, 2026. During Early Access, Grinding Gear Games described access through an Early Access key, including keys associated with Supporter Packs, or through certain qualifying previous purchases. In August 2025, the developer held a free-play weekend and said players could buy an Early Access key after the event or wait for the game to become free to play at full release. That was a statement about the planned full-release model at that time, not confirmation that the game is free now.

Before paying, check the current official Path of Exile 2 Early Access FAQ and the store page for the platform you intend to use. Access entitlements and storefront availability can differ, so confirm that the account and client you plan to use are covered.

What platforms can I play it on?

Grinding Gear Games’ November 2024 Early Access FAQ listed standalone PC, Steam, Epic Games Store, Xbox Series, and PlayStation 5 clients. It said macOS was not supported at the start of Early Access. These are launch-era platform details, not a verified current compatibility list.

Choose the client and platform you actually plan to play on, then verify its current listing and access requirements. The FAQ also said existing Path of Exile accounts could be used and that many, but not necessarily all, Path of Exile 1 microtransactions and relevant stash tabs would carry over. Compatibility depended on the item and platform, so check your account and the in-game store rather than assuming every purchase transfers.

Can you play Path of Exile 2 with friends?

Yes. The game supports different group setups, but local couch co-op and online co-op are distinct modes. Grinding Gear Games’ Early Access FAQ documented couch co-op on one account, while Steam’s listing describes online co-op for up to six players. Check the current in-game mode and platform requirements for the setup you want; the Steam feature description is not a guarantee that every mode or platform combination works identically.

  • Brand New in box. The product ships with all relevant accessories
  • Solo: Play through the game on your own.
  • Couch co-op: Play locally with someone sharing your screen; the developer FAQ said this could run on one account.
  • Online co-op: Join other players online. Steam lists groups of up to six, but confirm platform and mode details for your setup.

The PlayStation Blog’s 2024 preview also said cross-play was confirmed. Because that is preview-era information, check current platform listings and game settings to confirm how cross-play is supported now.

Will your character get wiped?

Grinding Gear Games’ November 2024 Early Access FAQ said characters would not be wiped and would be placed in an Early Access league. A later league launch illustrates the distinction between keeping a character and resetting an economy: in its August 2025 Third Edict FAQ, the developer said existing characters would remain playable in Standard Early Access while the new Rise of the Abyssal league would have a fresh economy.

A fresh league economy means a new starting environment for that league; it does not, by itself, mean your existing character has been deleted. The 2025 statement documents that particular league transition, so check the current league announcement for the rules that apply to a new season or update.

What should you know before you start?

Check access and platform first

Confirm current availability, price, access entitlement, and platform support on the official game page and the storefront you plan to use. The documented Early Access terms and platform list are historical and should not be relied on as a live purchasing guide.

Set expectations about Early Access content

The launch-era three-act campaign and counts of 50 bosses and around 400 monster types describe what the developer said was present at Early Access start in 2024. They do not tell you how much content is in the current version or whether the campaign and endgame have since changed.

Choose your league with persistence in mind

If you already have a character, look at the current league announcement before starting another one. Standard and a new league can preserve different kinds of progress: existing characters may remain available while the new league begins with its own economy.

Verify account and cosmetic compatibility

The Early Access FAQ said existing Path of Exile accounts could be used and that many, but not all, Path of Exile 1 microtransactions and relevant stash tabs would carry over, depending on item and platform. Check the current account details for the exact purchases you care about.
