Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →scriptui.dll is not a standard Windows system file. It is a legacy Norton AntiVirus component named Norton AntiVirus Script Blocking UI, originally published by Symantec Corporation.
If Windows says scriptui.dll is missing, cannot load, or was not designed to run on Windows, the safest fix is to identify the Norton installation that requested it and repair or reinstall that product. Do not download a replacement DLL and copy it into System32 or SysWOW64.
What scriptui.dll belongs to
Historical file information identifies scriptui.dll as part of Norton AntiVirus’ Script Blocking feature. Older installation traces place it inside Norton’s own program directory rather than inside a protected Windows folder.
| Detail | What the evidence shows |
|---|---|
| File | scriptui.dll |
| Description | Norton AntiVirus Script Blocking UI |
| Product | Norton AntiVirus |
| Publisher | Symantec Corporation |
| Type | Legacy application DLL |
| Architecture | Historical metadata identifies it as a 32-bit Win32 DLL |
| Current status | It may be absent from modern Norton products |
The historical version, size, and installation path should not be treated as specifications for a current Norton build. A file with the same name is not automatically legitimate.

First, identify which program is requesting the file
The correct repair depends on the executable that loads scriptui.dll.
Common symptoms include:
The program can't start because SCRIPTUI.dll is missing from your computer.Error loading SCRIPTUI.dll. The specified module could not be found.Failed to load SCRIPTUI.dllThe application was unable to start correctly
The exact wording can vary because Windows displays the message generated by the calling program or loader.
If the error appears when Windows starts
The likely cause is an old Norton startup entry or an incomplete Norton removal.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an old Norton, Symantec, or security-related entry.
- Right-click it and choose Open file location if that option is available.
- Note the program name and folder. Do not delete the file yet.
- Disable only the clearly identified obsolete entry.
- Restart Windows.
If the message disappears, the DLL is probably being requested by an orphaned Norton startup component. Remove the old Norton installation properly rather than obtaining scriptui.dll separately.
If the error appears when opening Norton
The Norton installation is probably incomplete, corrupted, or too old for the current system. Continue with the Norton repair steps below.
If another application displays the error
The application may contain an old Norton integration or startup reference. Write down the executable named in the dialog, then check that program’s installation folder and support documentation. Reinstalling Norton may not remove a reference held by a different application.
Fix 1: Update and reinstall the Norton product
Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes
This is the most likely fix because scriptui.dll belongs to Norton software, not Windows. Repairing the originating product restores its files, services, registration, and dependencies together.
Try LiveUpdate first
- Open Norton from the Start menu or notification area.
- Select Security.
- Choose LiveUpdate.
- Allow the update process to finish.
- Run LiveUpdate again if Norton reports that additional updates are available.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Norton or the program that showed the error.
If the error remains, use Norton’s official Remove and Reinstall or Norton 360 Remover utility. Download it only from Norton Support or from your Norton account.

- Save open work and close Norton.
- Download the current Norton removal and reinstall utility from official Norton Support.
- Run the downloaded utility as administrator.
- Accept the license terms.
- Choose Reinstall when that option is offered.
- Confirm the uninstall.
- Allow Windows to restart.
- Let the utility install Norton again, or sign in to your Norton account when prompted.
- Restart Windows once more.
- Test the application that previously requested
scriptui.dll.
If you no longer use Norton, choose the remove-only path instead. Then restart and test again. An old startup reference may still need to be removed if another application continues to request the file.

How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded if:
- Norton opens without a missing-file message.
- The original program starts normally.
- The startup warning no longer appears.
- Norton reports that protection is active and current.
If the error names a different executable after reinstallation, that program is probably the remaining source of the request.
Fix 2: Check Norton quarantine before restoring anything
Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes
Norton may have quarantined or deleted the file after detecting suspicious activity, corruption, or a modified copy. Restore it only when you can verify that it came from the legitimate Norton installation.
- Open Norton.
- Select Security.
- Open Security History.
- Filter the results by Quarantine.
- Select the entry associated with
scriptui.dll. - Open File Insight or the available file details.
- Check the original location, publisher information, detection name, and signature details.
- Confirm that the path belongs to the legitimate Norton installation.
- Choose Restore only if the file is clearly genuine.
- If Norton offers Create exception & restore, use it only after verifying the file’s provenance.
- Restart Windows and test the affected program.
Restoring a quarantined file is a security risk. A restored file is not repaired, and a counterfeit or modified DLL can remain dangerous. If the file is unsigned, located outside the expected Norton directory, recently created without explanation, or detected by multiple reputable security products, do not restore it. Reinstall Norton instead and run a full security scan.
Recommended Free Tools
If the quarantine entry cannot be restored, the item may have been removed permanently or may be damaged. Reinstalling the originating Norton product is the correct next step.
Fix 3: Remove an old Norton installation cleanly
Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes
A partial uninstall can leave a startup entry or integration that still searches for scriptui.dll.
- Press the Windows key.
- Type Installed apps and open it.
- Search for Norton, Symantec, or the older security product name.
- Select the obsolete entry.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the uninstall wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- If Norton’s official removal utility is offered, use it rather than manually deleting folders.
- Restart again.
- Test whether the warning has disappeared.
Do not delete a Norton folder manually before uninstalling. Manual deletion can leave services, scheduled tasks, registry entries, and startup references behind.
If no Norton software remains but the error continues, identify the exact program named in the dialog. The safest fix may be repairing or reinstalling that program, or removing its obsolete startup entry.
Fix 4: Check whether the file has the correct architecture
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
Historical metadata identifies this Norton DLL as a 32-bit Win32 component. That does not mean every file with the name is correct, and it does not mean that copying a 32-bit DLL into a Windows folder is appropriate.
A 32-bit application normally needs the matching 32-bit version of its own component. Installing a similarly named file from another Norton release can produce errors such as:

- The application was unable to start correctly.
- The file is not designed to run on Windows.
- The specified procedure could not be found.
- The module could not be loaded.
To check the affected application:
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Choose Open file location.
- Right-click the main executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Record the product name and publisher.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab if it exists.
- Do not replace the DLL manually. Repair or reinstall the matching application.
Windows 11 and Windows 10 can run many 32-bit applications, but compatibility does not make a random 32-bit DLL safe. Reinstalling Norton supplies the component that matches the product’s own files.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes
This is a secondary check. scriptui.dll is associated with Norton, so Windows repair commands are not guaranteed to recreate it. They are useful when the error began after broader system corruption or when other Windows files are also malfunctioning.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Norton and the affected application.
Microsoft documents this repair process in its System File Checker and DISM guidance.
A clean SFC result does not prove that scriptui.dll is present. SFC checks protected Windows files, not every third-party application DLL.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow and uncertain. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention, while the repair feature requires the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling Norton remains the definitive fix for this Norton component.
Fix 6: Install a Microsoft runtime only if the error names it
Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes
Do not reinstall Visual C++ Redistributable automatically just because a DLL is missing. scriptui.dll is a Norton UI component, not a Microsoft Visual C++ file.
A runtime repair is relevant only when the error or diagnostic tool names a missing Microsoft dependency, such as an MSVC runtime DLL.
If that is the case:
- Note the exact missing runtime named in the error.
- Download the matching package from Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
- Choose the architecture required by the application.
- Run the installer as administrator.
- Choose Repair if the package is already installed.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
Do not use a Visual C++ package as a substitute for repairing Norton.
Fix 7: Check Windows Update and relevant drivers
Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes
A driver is not the normal cause of a missing Norton UI DLL, but system updates can resolve compatibility problems that appear alongside application failures.

Install Windows updates
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
Review Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories related to the hardware used when the error occurs, such as Display adapters, Network adapters, or Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click a device.
- Choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the provider and driver status.
- Use Update driver only when a newer driver is available from Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Do not remove a working driver merely because scriptui.dll is missing.
Finding which of several installed drivers is stale can take time, especially after repeated Windows upgrades. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers, while installing drivers requires the full version; it is optional and does not replace reinstalling the Norton application that owns scriptui.dll.
Fix 8: Check Windows Features only when the application requires one
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
Enabling a random Windows feature will not restore a Norton DLL. Check Optional Features only if the application’s own documentation or error specifically identifies a Windows component.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review the Windows Features list.
- Enable only the feature required by the affected application.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
Do not enable legacy components simply because scriptui.dll is missing. The file belongs to an application installation, not to Windows Features.
Do not use regsvr32 as a general fix
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose the appropriate COM registration entry point, usually DllRegisterServer. It does not download a missing file, repair Norton, restore dependencies, or fix an arbitrary application DLL.
Microsoft explains the command’s behavior in its regsvr32 documentation.
Use regsvr32 scriptui.dll only when the software vendor specifically instructs you to register that exact file and confirms that it supports registration. For this legacy Norton UI component, reinstalling the originating product is the normal remedy.
Why downloading scriptui.dll is unsafe
Avoid standalone DLL downloads and manual copying into System32 or SysWOW64. That approach can introduce:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Malware disguised as a familiar filename.
- The wrong Norton release.
- The wrong architecture.
- Missing dependencies.
- A file with altered metadata or no valid signature.
- A mismatch with Norton’s services and installation records.
It also fails to repair the underlying Norton installation. Even if the message disappears, the product may still have broken services, incomplete registration, or additional missing files.
Use Norton’s official installer, Norton Support removal utility, or your Norton account instead.

Causes of the error, in likely order
| Likely cause | Appropriate response |
|---|---|
| Corrupted or obsolete Norton installation | Run LiveUpdate, then use Norton’s official removal and reinstall process |
| Norton quarantined or deleted the file | Inspect Security History and restore only after verifying authenticity |
| Partial Norton uninstall | Remove the obsolete product properly and clear the stale startup reference |
| Mismatched historical DLL | Reinstall the originating Norton release instead of mixing files |
| Windows component corruption | Run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC |
| Malware or counterfeit file | Do not restore it, scan the system, and reinstall legitimate software |
| Another application still requests the DLL | Identify that executable and repair or remove its stale integration |
The likelihood order is troubleshooting guidance, not a published Norton statistic.
If the error remains after reinstalling Norton
Check the exact executable named in the dialog.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Details.
- Look for the executable named by the error.
- Right-click it and choose Open file location.
- Check whether the folder belongs to Norton or to another application.
- Review Event Viewer by right-clicking Start and selecting Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs → Application.
- Look for an error recorded at the same time as the failed launch.
- Repair or reinstall the application named in the event.
- Remove an obsolete startup entry only after confirming what it launches.
System Restore can also create mismatched security-software files. If the problem began immediately after a restore, reinstall Norton rather than copying back an individual DLL.

FAQ
Is scriptui.dll a Windows file?
No verified evidence shows it shipping as a Windows component. It is associated with legacy Norton AntiVirus software.
Should scriptui.dll be in System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Historical evidence places it in Norton’s own installation directory. Do not copy it into either Windows system folder.
Is scriptui.dll safe?
The filename alone is not enough to establish safety. Check the file’s location, publisher, digital signature, origin, and Norton detection details. Attackers can give a malicious file the same name and metadata as a legitimate component.
Is scriptui.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
Historical metadata identifies it as a 32-bit Win32 DLL. That is historical information, not a current Norton package specification. Reinstall the product instead of trying to match architecture manually.
Will Visual C++ Redistributable fix it?
Only if the actual error names a missing Microsoft runtime dependency. Visual C++ Redistributable does not replace Norton’s scriptui.dll.
Will SFC restore scriptui.dll?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows files. It does not normally restore third-party Norton application files.
Should I run regsvr32 scriptui.dll?
Usually no. The command is for DLLs designed for registration and does not repair a missing or corrupted Norton installation.
What if I no longer have Norton installed?
Remove the obsolete startup reference or repair the other application that still requests the file. Do not download scriptui.dll just to silence the message.
What is the safest fix?
Identify the Norton installation or other executable requesting the file, inspect quarantine if applicable, and then repair or reinstall the legitimate Norton product. That restores the correct files and supporting installation state without introducing an untrusted DLL.
