Not according to any confirmed Sony explanation. Former Blizzard boss Mike Ybarra argues that Valve’s move into living-room gaming could make Sony more protective of console exclusivity, but the reported shift—and its cause—remain unconfirmed by Sony.
What Mike Ybarra said about Sony and Steam Machine
HotHardware reported on March 4, 2026, that speculation had emerged about PlayStation stepping back from bringing some single-player games to PC. Ybarra, identified by the outlet as a former Blizzard boss, said the move would make sense to him if true. He suggested Sony sees Valve as a major new competitor as Steam Machine brings PC gaming into the living room. His reproduced statement says: “Most important: they view Valve as a major new competitor. Valve will enter the living room and console market with…”
That is Ybarra’s interpretation, not a statement from Sony. HotHardware presented the possible retreat as speculation, and the material available does not establish that Steam Machine caused Sony to change its PC strategy.
What Sony’s past PC releases establish
Sony Interactive Entertainment’s FY2025 supplemental information lists selected first-party games released on PC, including Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, Ghost of Tsushima, Returnal and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. This confirms that Sony has brought some PlayStation titles to PC; it does not establish how the company will handle future releases.

- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
The same Sony report gives examples of combined PlayStation and PC sales: Horizon Zero Dawn at 20.0 million units as of November 28, 2021; God of War at 23.0 million as of November 1, 2022; and Ghost of Tsushima at 13.0 million as of August 11, 2024. These are totals across both platforms, not PC-only sales, and they do not show the profitability of individual ports or explain a later strategy decision. Sony’s listing of Ghost of Yōtei for PS5 likewise does not prove that a PC version will never appear. Sony’s FY2025 supplemental information is a record of selected releases and figures, not an announcement of a PC-port policy change.
What has been reported about a possible change
A May 19, 2026 PC Guide article summarized reporting attributed to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier: PlayStation Studios business CEO Hermen Hulst reportedly told staff that narrative single-player games would remain console exclusive going forward. PC Guide also noted that the report did not necessarily cover every single-player game and described multiplayer titles as being treated differently.

This is secondary reporting about an alleged internal message, not an official Sony announcement. It does not establish a blanket end to PlayStation PC releases, and the reviewed reporting does not identify Steam Machine as the reason. The distinction reported between narrative single-player releases and multiplayer games matters: a change affecting one category would not automatically mean Sony is abandoning PC ports across the board.
Why Steam Machine figures into the theory
Valve’s official Steam Machine page establishes that the hardware is a real product. A device designed to bring Steam gaming to the living room makes Valve relevant to Ybarra’s competition argument: Sony could, in theory, see a living-room PC as competing more directly with consoles than a conventional desktop does.

- Operating System: SteamOS 3.0
That logic remains a hypothesis about Sony’s thinking, not evidence of it. A separate PC Guide story published March 13, 2026, quoted former Bluepoint Games technology head Peter Dalton saying “the Steam console could effectively offer the best of all worlds.” That is another industry opinion, not confirmation of Sony’s rationale. The available material also does not establish a definitive Steam Machine price or general retail availability.

HotHardware also mentioned reports about a future Xbox with PC functionality as a possible competitive factor. More broadly, PC-port economics or the wider competition between console and PC platforms could be relevant considerations. But these remain possible explanations, not established reasons for any Sony decision. No verified market-wide statistic in the cited material measures Steam Machine’s threat to PlayStation or demonstrates that it caused the reported shift.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
What can be concluded
- Sony has released selected first-party PlayStation games on PC, as its investor-relations materials document.
- Media reports in 2026 described a possible move to keep some narrative single-player games console exclusive, while suggesting multiplayer could be handled differently.
- Ybarra believes Valve’s living-room ambitions could help explain such a move, but Sony has not confirmed that explanation in the cited material.
The accurate reading is not that Sony has officially blamed Steam Machine or ended all PC ports. It is that a possible change has been reported, and Ybarra has offered Valve’s living-room push as one plausible explanation.
