What Layden said about Sony’s disc decision
In comments from an appearance on The Expansion Pass podcast, as reported by GamesRadar+, Layden said, “I don’t agree with that decision.” He acknowledged the convenience of digital games, but argued that players who still buy physical copies matter to PlayStation.
Layden described the deeper concern as a shift in the buying conversation: “do you own a game?” or “do you have access to a digital asset?” He also argued, “If you can’t sell a thing, that means you don’t own a thing. And if you don’t own it, then what are you buying?” These quotations are attributed to Layden as reported by GamesRadar+; the podcast recording or transcript was not independently verified.
His point is about player expectations and PlayStation’s relationship with people who collect physical games. Layden said he did not know Sony’s internal financial rationale, so his comments should not be read as an explanation of why Sony made the decision.

When will PlayStation stop releasing new games on disc?
Sony announced that production of physical discs for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting in January 2028. Sony says those new releases will be available digitally through PlayStation Store and retailers. It also says the change does not affect games already released, or scheduled to be released, on disc before that date. The timing and scope are Sony’s announced plan, not a claim that existing discs or all physical PlayStation games disappear in January 2028.
In its July 1, 2026 announcement, Sid Shuman, senior director of SIE Content Communications, said physical game disc production for new PlayStation releases would end starting January 2028. Sony did not publish a market-share figure to quantify the shift toward digital in that announcement.
Does buying a digital PlayStation game mean you own it?
For PlayStation Store purchases covered by Sony’s US Terms of Service, the terms say the buyer receives a personal license to use the product for private, non-commercial purposes. They say the license is not transferable unless applicable local law requires otherwise, and that users do not own the product. See PlayStation’s US Terms of Service.
That is a statement about PlayStation Store purchases under the US terms. It should not be extended automatically to other regions, physical discs, or every digital store. Local law can also affect how terms apply. The distinction helps explain Layden’s concern: a disc is a tangible object a player can collect, while a digital purchase is governed by the relevant account and license terms.

The available information does not establish that every physical disc can be resold or lent without restrictions, that every disc game works fully offline, or that a digital game will necessarily become inaccessible. Those questions depend on the particular game, its requirements, and applicable terms; the broad ownership distinction alone does not answer them.

GamesRadar+ reported Layden’s rough estimate that 80% of purchases are downloads and 20% physical. That is his estimate, not an independently verified industry-wide sales statistic. Sony’s announcement gives no supporting market-share number, and the sources cited here do not establish an independently published figure for the overall split.

That distinction matters because Layden’s argument is not a measured forecast of physical-game demand. It is a warning about how the shift could be perceived by the players who continue to value collectible copies.

What to check when choosing a physical or digital copy
- Format and terms: A disc is tangible; a digital purchase is governed by the applicable store and account terms. Check the terms for your region rather than assuming the US language applies everywhere.
- Availability: Sony says games released or scheduled for disc before January 2028 are unaffected by its announced end to production for new titles. This does not establish how long any particular title will remain in retail stock.
- Game requirements: Check the specific game’s download, internet, update, and online-service requirements. The announced disc-production change does not answer whether a particular game can be installed or played offline.
- Transfer or resale: Do not infer unrestricted lending or resale rights from the fact that a game comes on a disc. The relevant game, platform rules, and local law may matter.
