The October 5, 2026 Gears of War: E-Day update focuses on stability and performance, online services, campaign progression and objectives, Horde Siege, Versus, and UI fixes. It was released ahead of global release; it is a separate update from the broader beta-feedback and Season 1 changes announced on September 30.
What changed in the October 5 update?
The publisher describes the update as bringing “various stability, performance, hardware compatibility, and reporting improvements across the game.” The patch notes list fixes across several modes and systems, rather than a new feature set. See the official Gears of War news page for the October 5 notes and any later updates.

Online services and multiplayer
- Versus Social matches could get stuck on the “Waiting for players” screen; the update addresses this issue.
- Xbox authentication could fail when the system clock was substantially wrong.
- The “Bilefrog-Kalona” split-screen sign-out issue after suspending and resuming the game was addressed.
- Online-session stability was improved when accessing session information.
Campaign progression and objectives
- Players joining an existing campaign should no longer receive War Journal progress or Forge rewards earned before they joined.
- Join-in-progress players should receive the expected Forge Discovery War Journal progress.
- Players could remain attached to turrets when a cinematic or gameplay moment started; this behavior was addressed.
- In Act 2, Chapter 2, the objective at Allfather’s Plaza could fail to update. The same chapter’s Black Raven Down side objective could spawn a Heavy Gear without a Vulcan. Both issues are listed as fixed.
- In Act 4, Chapter 1, entering during introductory dialogue could prevent side objectives from starting.
- In Act 4, Chapter 2, one cause of the Power Station defense objective failing to complete after visible enemies were defeated was addressed.
Horde Siege and Versus
- Horde Siege Blitz Secure objectives that could not be completed were addressed.
- During a Horde Siege Blitz mission at Plaza Ruins, the extraction helicopter could fail to appear; the patch addresses this issue.
- In Versus Demolition, a bomb could become stuck in a defusing state if a player was eliminated while beginning the defuse interaction. This issue was addressed.
UI and reporting
- Online Diagnostic text was adjusted.
- The update addresses one possible cause of repeated attempts to claim the same Challenge Mail reward.
How the October 5 patch differs from the September 30 update
The September 30 announcement, “Emergence Begins – Tomorrow,” covers changes made since the August multiplayer beta and Season 1 details. It is not an expanded list of October 5 patch fixes. The distinction matters when checking whether a particular balance change or launch issue is part of the patch.
| Announcement | Purpose and contents | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| October 5, 2026 patch notes | Specific stability, compatibility, service, campaign, Horde Siege, Versus, and UI issues; the publisher says the work was ahead of global release. | Use this list for the fixes detailed above. |
| September 30, 2026 “Emergence Begins – Tomorrow” | Changes since the August multiplayer beta, including weapon, movement and cover tuning, Horde Siege and Versus tuning, optimization, bug fixes, and quality-of-life settings. | These broader changes are separate from the October 5 patch. |
September 30 launch notes and Season 1 context
The September 30 announcement also has a launch-known-issues section. It says playing the entire game without reloading checkpoints or restarting may cause memory issues and recommends reloading a checkpoint if an encounter or objective blocks progress. Other listed notes concern the Benchmark-mode performance overlay, the game process potentially continuing after closing, campaign lobby progress behavior, and offline PC play not being available until October 6. These are statements from the September 30 announcement, not additional October 5 patch entries.
