“The program can’t start because exceptionhandler32.dll is missing from your computer.” The exceptionhandler32.dll error usually means that an installed application can no longer find one of its private 32-bit files.
Which fix applies to you
Choose the situation that matches what you see:
- The error names an application you still use: repair or reinstall that application from its official installer or launcher.
- The error appears at every startup, but you no longer use the application: uninstall the old program, then remove its orphaned startup entry or scheduled task.
- The file disappeared after antivirus detected it: inspect quarantine and Protection history before restoring anything.
- The application reports that the DLL is “not designed to run on Windows”: repair the application, verify its architecture, and check for a missing dependency.
- The error says “the specified module could not be found”: the named DLL may exist while one of its dependent files is missing.
- Several Windows applications are failing: run Windows Update, DISM, and System File Checker. These tools do not normally reconstruct a third-party application DLL.
- The error began after installing software or a driver: consider System Restore after identifying what will be removed.
Do not begin by downloading exceptionhandler32.dll from a random DLL website or copying it into a Windows folder.

What is exceptionhandler32.dll
exceptionhandler32.dll is not a Windows system DLL, Microsoft runtime, standard driver, DirectX component, or .NET file. Public file records associate it with an “ExceptionHandler” module from simplitec GmbH and identify it as a 32-bit third-party application component. It normally belongs in the folder of the program that installed it, rather than in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. See the file metadata and observed paths.

These associations come from public file and installation inventories, not from a current vendor specification for every release. Different parent applications may contain different historical builds. Replacing the file by matching only its name or reported size is unsafe.
Fix 1: Identify and repair the application
The most reliable solution is to repair or reinstall the program that originally installed the DLL. Windows applications generally search their own installation directory first, so restoring the parent program puts the file and its related dependencies together.
Find the caller
- Read the complete error dialog. Record the application name and any executable name shown in the title bar or message.
- If the dialog does not identify the program, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps and look for simplitec, simpliclean, MAGIX, KMPFaster, F-Secure Booster, an optimizer, or an unfamiliar utility.
- Right-click a likely entry and choose Open file location.
- Check whether the executable is inside a product folder under Program Files or Program Files (x86).
If a copy of exceptionhandler32.dll still exists, right-click it, select Properties, and inspect General, Details, and Digital Signatures. A plausible copy should be beside its parent application, not in a temporary folder, Downloads, or an unrelated Windows directory.
Repair or uninstall it
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps → Installed apps.
- Search for the application identified in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair, then start the application again.
If there is no Repair option, select Uninstall and reinstall the application from its publisher, the original launcher, or the official installer. For a game, use its launcher’s Verify integrity, Verify files, or Repair command where available.
On older Windows versions:
- Press Win+R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the parent application.
- Choose Repair or Uninstall, if offered.
If you no longer need the application, uninstall it instead of trying to preserve the DLL. Restart Windows and check whether the startup message has stopped.
For simplitec software, use the official simplitec download page when that product is still required. The current installer cannot be assumed to contain the exact historical build used by every older application, so the original product installer may be necessary.
Fix 2: Remove an orphaned startup reference
A missing DLL message at every boot often means that the application was partially removed but Windows still launches one of its helpers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck Startup apps
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Find the entry associated with the error.
- Right-click it and choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Disabling the entry stops the launch attempt but does not remove the old program. If the error disappears and you do not need the software, uninstall it through Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
Check Task Scheduler
- Press Win+R.
- Type
taskschd.msc. - Press Enter.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks whose names match the old application or publisher.
- Open a suspicious task and inspect the Actions tab.
- Confirm that its action points to a missing executable or a path containing
exceptionhandler32.dll. - If the parent program has already been uninstalled, right-click the task and select Delete.
Do not delete a task merely because its name is unfamiliar. Confirm its action and publisher first.

You can also inspect Event Viewer by pressing Win+R, entering eventvwr.msc, and checking Windows Logs → Application for the executable that attempted to load the DLL.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine safely
Security software may have removed the file. That does not prove the file was safe, and it does not justify disabling antivirus protection.
For Microsoft Defender:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Open the detection that corresponds to the application or DLL.
- Review its path, detection name, and action.
- Confirm that the file came from the legitimate parent application.
- Restore or allow it only when the installer and application are trusted and your security software indicates that the detection was a false positive.
Microsoft documents these actions in its Protection history guidance.
After a verified restore, repair or reinstall the parent application. Do not simply restore an isolated DLL and continue using a damaged installation. Run a full security scan if the file was located in a temporary directory, a user profile folder, Downloads, or an unrelated system directory.
Fix 4: Repair dependencies and confirm 32-bit compatibility
A 32-bit program needs 32-bit dependencies even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Installing only an x64 runtime will not satisfy a 32-bit application.
Some inventories for associated products include files such as msvcp120.dll, msvcr120.dll, mfc120u.dll, and an x86 Visual C++ installer. This suggests that particular releases may use the Visual C++ 2013 x86 runtime, but it does not prove that every exceptionhandler32.dll error requires that package.
If the error names one of those dependent files:
- Open Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
- Download the x86 package required by the parent application.
- Run the installer.
- Choose Repair if it is already installed.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the original application.
Keep older Visual C++ versions installed when older software requires them. Do not remove a legacy x86 runtime simply because a newer x64 package is present.
If the message only names exceptionhandler32.dll, do not install Visual C++ automatically. Repairing the owning application remains the correct first step.
Fix 5: Do not copy the DLL or use regsvr32 blindly
Do not copy exceptionhandler32.dll into System32, SysWOW64, or the Windows directory. Windows uses an ordered DLL search process, and Microsoft explains that the application directory is an important part of that process in its DLL search order documentation. A global copy can create version conflicts or load an untrusted file into another program.

regsvr32 is also not a general DLL repair command. Registration is intended for DLLs that expose registration functions, commonly COM or ActiveX components. A private application runtime may not provide DllRegisterServer.
Recommended Free Tools
Only use registration if the application’s official documentation explicitly requires it. In that specific case, open Command Prompt as administrator, change to the application directory, and run the vendor-provided command, for example:
regsvr32 "C:PathToexceptionhandler32.dll"
If Windows reports that the entry point is missing, registration is not supported by that DLL. Reinstall the parent application instead.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components
Use Windows repair commands when you suspect broader Windows corruption, not as a substitute for reinstalling the third-party application.
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the original program. If it reports no integrity violations but the DLL error remains, return to repairing or removing the parent application.

Fix 7: Update Windows, the application, or its drivers
Install pending Windows updates and update the affected application from its official source. If the error began after a graphics, chipset, storage, or other driver change, open Device Manager:
- Press Win+X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the device.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a recently updated device, open Properties → Driver and select Roll Back Driver when the option is available. Do not replace the DLL to compensate for a driver mismatch.
Finding the correct driver manually can mean checking hardware identifiers, Windows versions, and vendor packages. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify stale drivers; the full version performs the driver installation, but updating a driver is not the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to a specific application.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
A replacement downloaded by filename can have the wrong architecture, an incompatible build, missing dependencies, or malicious modifications. Historical public records report different builds and file details, so one copy cannot be treated as universal. A downloaded DLL also leaves the original application damaged and may not fix the startup reference that caused the error.
Use the parent application’s official installer, its original game launcher, Microsoft’s official runtime downloads, or Windows repair tools. Never disable antivirus merely to force an unknown DLL into a system folder.

FAQ
Is exceptionhandler32.dll part of Windows?
No. It is a third-party 32-bit application component associated in public records with simplitec GmbH. It normally stays inside the folder of the program that installed it.
Why does it appear after uninstalling a program?
The application may have been only partly removed. A startup entry, scheduled task, service, or registry reference can continue launching a helper whose DLL is gone.
What does “specified module could not be found” mean?
It can mean that exceptionhandler32.dll is missing, but it can also mean that a dependency required by that DLL is missing. Repair the parent application and inspect the complete error message before installing a runtime.
What does “not designed to run on Windows” mean?
The file may be corrupted, incompatible with the application, the wrong architecture, or unable to load a required dependency. Reinstall the parent program rather than substituting a file selected by name.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I install Visual C++?
Only if the application requires it or the error identifies a missing Visual C++ dependency. If required, use the matching Microsoft x86 runtime for the 32-bit application.
Should I run regsvr32 exceptionhandler32.dll?
Usually no. This file is treated as a private application component, not automatically as a COM server. Registration will not repair a missing or damaged application installation.
What if every repair fails?
Identify the calling executable through Task Manager, Task Scheduler, Event Viewer, or the application’s installation log. Then reinstall that parent program from an official source or remove the obsolete startup reference if the program is no longer wanted.
