EXODUS is scheduled to launch on April 7, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The sci-fi RPG was first announced at The Game Awards in 2023; its December 2025 Game Awards trailer was a later reveal, not the game’s debut. “The next Mass Effect” is a comparison, not an official label or a promise of a direct connection.

Was EXODUS revealed at The Game Awards?
Yes—but the game was first announced on December 7, 2023, at The Game Awards. Archetype presented it as a new sci-fi RPG and the start of a franchise. The December 11, 2025, Game Awards trailer was a subsequent trailer debut. Hasbro’s 2025 announcement described the then-current release window as early 2027; Archetype later set the specific April 7, 2027 date.

Hasbro announced an extended gameplay reveal on June 6, 2026, while the release window was still early 2027. Archetype’s August 25 release-date trailer then supplied the launch date. This sequence matters: describing the 2025 trailer as EXODUS’s first reveal confuses a new trailer with the original announcement.
What kind of game is EXODUS?
Archetype describes EXODUS as a story-driven, single-player, third-person sci-fi action-adventure RPG. It is set in a new universe 40,000 years in the future. Players take the role of the Traveler; 2026 materials identify the protagonist as Jun Aslan, a salvager turned Traveler. Archetype’s original announcement and the current FAQ outline the premise.
Time dilation drives the story
The central fictional premise is that interstellar travel can make a mission feel like days to the Traveler while decades pass back home. As a result, a decision made during an expedition may shape the society and relationships Jun returns to, including the lives of people who have lived through those intervening years. This is the game’s narrative device, not a claim about the specific mechanics of real-world space travel.
Jun’s crew includes human and Awakened-animal companions
The August 2026 release-date trailer spotlights Salt, described by Archetype as an Awakened octopus, and Emrys, a member of the Deva, a Celestial species associated with plural consciousness. The trailer announcement says Jun builds a crew of human and Awakened-animal companions. Earlier announcements describe companions as having their own stories, motivations, and combat roles.

What does the trailer show about gameplay?
These details are descriptions from Archetype and publisher Hasbro, not independently tested gameplay findings. The official site also cautions that in-development content is subject to change.
Choices, stealth, and combat
Hasbro’s December 2025 trailer announcement describes choices and competing agendas that affect Jun’s fate and echo across generations. It presents stealth and open confrontation as possible approaches, alongside weapons, abilities, companion bonds, and combat synergies.

Customization and progression
The June 2026 gameplay announcement says players can customize Jun’s appearance and choose a male or female Traveler. It describes two alignments—Paladin and Immortal—that affect how the world responds and how abilities progress. The Recycler weapon has multiple firing modes, while the Traveler’s Gauntlet can be upgraded with salvaged alien technology to grant abilities. That announcement also features companions and locations including Persepolis and Tsang.
Is EXODUS really “the next Mass Effect”?
It is reasonable to compare the announced ingredients: EXODUS is a third-person, single-player science-fiction RPG focused on choices, companions, and combat. Archetype’s developers include BioWare veterans. But the available official material does not establish that EXODUS is a Mass Effect sequel, shares its world, or will match its gameplay, quality, scope, or narrative structure. Archetype describes EXODUS in its own terms as a new sci-fi universe and franchise.
Recommended Free Tools
The clearest way to judge the comparison is to stick to what has been announced: a customizable Traveler, companion characters, choices with consequences across generations, and combat that can involve stealth or direct confrontation. Whether those systems deliver an experience comparable to Mass Effect remains unproven until the game is released and assessed.
