Expeditions: A MudRunner Game is worth considering if you want methodical off-road exploration more than fast races or a constant stream of new sights. Its demanding terrain, vehicle physics, and scouting tools earned generally favorable critic reviews, while mission friction and a clumsy map drew criticism. User ratings are notably more divided, so the slow, technical pace is likely to be the deciding factor.
What do reviews say about Expeditions: A MudRunner Game?
Critics were generally positive, but player ratings were substantially less enthusiastic in the Metacritic snapshot consulted in 2026. The site listed a 77/100 Metascore from 22 critic reviews and a 5.4/10 user score from 88 ratings. Its critic distribution was 15 positive, seven mixed, and none negative; its user distribution was 40% positive, 20% mixed, and 40% negative. These are changing page totals, not permanent ratings. Metacritic’s review page shows the current aggregate.
The favorable reviews tend to value the same things the game is built around: careful driving, difficult terrain, and the satisfaction of scouting a route before committing to it. Critics also liked its scenery, physics, and identity as a more exploration-focused counterpart to SnowRunner. Shacknews characterized it as an “interesting iteration,” while noting that some additions feel light. Metacritic collects review excerpts.
The reservations are about the experience around that driving. Reviewers pointed to mission gates, an unfriendly map screen, features that felt underdeveloped, and a core loop that can become repetitive. Those complaints help explain why a favorable critic average does not mean the game will suit every off-road fan.

What kind of game is Expeditions?
It is a scientific off-road adventure, not a conventional racing game. You take vehicles into research missions, scout difficult routes, and use equipment to locate objectives and navigate terrain. Saber Interactive describes settings in Arizona and the Carpathians, including deserts, forests, and mountains. The developer says the physics build on the SnowRunner engine, with changes for this game’s exploration-focused play. Focus Entertainment’s official game page outlines the premise and environments.
Tools give expeditions a different rhythm from simply driving toward a waypoint. Depending on the task, you can use reconnaissance or camera drones, scanners, metal detectors, anchors, and echo sounders. You can also manage a camp, build base structures, and recruit experts. The result is a loop of preparation, scouting, and careful traversal, with discoveries and research objectives shaping where you go. Saber Interactive’s FAQ describes the mechanics and equipment.
How does Expeditions compare with SnowRunner?
The shared foundation is technical off-road driving: terrain matters, progress can be slow, and choosing a viable route is part of the challenge. The emphasis is different. SnowRunner is associated with hauling and task loops; Expeditions centers on scouting, research, and exploration. Saber says the physics derive from the same engine, but that alone does not establish a platform-by-platform performance comparison.
| Consideration | Expeditions | SnowRunner |
|---|---|---|
| Main emphasis | Research missions, reconnaissance, and exploration | Hauling and familiar task loops |
| Best fit if you enjoy | Planning routes, using scouting tools, and slow technical traversal | Vehicle-based hauling and completing delivery-style tasks |
| Likely friction | Mission gating, map usability, and possible repetition | Not assessed by the cited sources for this comparison |
| Technical performance by platform | Not established by the cited sources | Not established by the cited sources |
Choose Expeditions if discovering a route and managing a difficult journey sounds more appealing than hauling. If you mainly want the familiar task loop, its exploration focus may feel like a detour rather than an upgrade.

Is Expeditions worth it for you?
It is a stronger fit for patient players who enjoy making progress slowly and deliberately. The challenge comes from reading terrain, deciding when to scout, and choosing how to equip a vehicle for a mission—not from racing opponents. If that process is satisfying, the favorable reviews point to a distinctive off-road experience. If you prefer quick missions, frictionless navigation, or constant changes of pace, the interface and repetition complaints deserve weight in your decision.
