exsec32.dll is a genuine Microsoft Outlook component, and an exsec32.dll error usually means that the Office installation is damaged, incomplete, or the wrong architecture. Repair Microsoft Office first instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
What exsec32.dll is
Microsoft Outlook security updates list exsec32.dll as an Outlook file, with separate x86 and x64 builds. Its internal or original name is digsig32, and Microsoft-signed metadata identifies Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Corporation.
It is an Office file, not a standard Windows component. It should normally be restored inside the relevant Office installation directory, not copied into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Microsoft documentation has listed the file with versions including these examples:

These are not universal specifications. Versions and sizes change with the Office release, update level, installation technology, and architecture.
Older Outlook releases, including Outlook 2007, 2010, and 2016, have shipped the file. Its presence depends on the Office edition and build, so another computer may have a different version or may not have the file at all.
Errors caused by exsec32.dll
You may see messages such as:
- “The required file EXSEC32.DLL cannot be found in your path. Please reinstall Microsoft Outlook.”
- “The required file ExSec32.dll cannot be found in your path.”
- “An error occurred loading …exsec32.dll. The file may not have been installed or it has been corrupted.”
- “The program cannot start because exsec32.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because exsec32.dll was not found.”
- “The file may not have been installed or it has been corrupted.”
A generic “not designed to run on Windows” message can also indicate corruption or an architecture mismatch, although that wording is not specific to this file.
Before repairing anything, note:
- Whether the affected program is classic Outlook or another Office executable
- Whether Office is still installed and activated
- Whether the problem began after an Office update, failed repair, antivirus action, cleanup, or migration
- Whether your Office installation is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether Windows Security quarantined the file
- Whether the error affects every Windows user or only one profile
Fix 1: Run Office Online Repair
This is the safest and most likely fix when Outlook itself reports the missing file. Office repair restores the suite as a matching set, including the correct Outlook files and architecture.

- Close Outlook and every other Office application.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 or your Microsoft Office product.
- Select the three dots beside it.
- Choose Modify.
- Select Online Repair.
- Select Repair and confirm.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Outlook and test the action that produced the error.
Windows 10
- Close all Office applications.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Apps & features.
- Select Microsoft 365 or the relevant Microsoft Office product.
- Select Modify.
- Choose Online Repair, then select Repair.
- Restart Windows and launch Outlook.
Quick Repair is a reasonable first attempt when you have a slow connection or need a shorter repair. Online Repair is the more complete option and is preferable when exsec32.dll is missing or corrupted.
The repair worked if Outlook opens without the DLL message and the original action, such as opening a message, works normally. If Online Repair fails, produces an error code, or the file disappears again, continue with the checks below rather than copying a DLL manually.
Fix 2: Confirm the Office architecture
A 32-bit Outlook installation must use the matching 32-bit Office files. A 64-bit Outlook installation must use the matching 64-bit files. A file with the right name but the wrong architecture or Office build may produce another loading error.
Check the installed Office bitness
If Outlook opens:
- Open Outlook.
- Select File > Office Account.
- Select About Outlook.
- Read the line containing 32-bit or 64-bit.
If Outlook does not open:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Find Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365.
- Check the product description and installation details shown there.
Do not install a 64-bit Office package over a 32-bit installation. Remove the existing Office installation through Settings > Apps, restart Windows, and reinstall the same licensed product using the correct architecture. On 64-bit Windows, both 32-bit and 64-bit Office can be used, but the Office files must remain internally consistent.

A mixed installation can occur after changing Office editions, restoring an old image, removing part of Office, or combining Click-to-Run and older MSI-based components. Online Repair is the correct first response because it repairs the installation as a whole.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may quarantine a damaged file or incorrectly identify an Office component. Do not restore an isolated DLL automatically.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
exsec32.dll, Outlook, or Microsoft Office. - Open the entry and review its location, detection name, and action.
- If the item came from the genuine Office installation, verify the Office installation through repair rather than restoring the isolated file.
- Run Online Repair again if necessary.
Only allow or restore a quarantined item when you are confident it came from the legitimate Office installation and its Microsoft signature is valid. Reinstalling or repairing Office is usually safer than restoring a single quarantined DLL.
If the file is outside the Office directory, unsigned, or signed by an unexpected publisher, do not restore it. Run a full Windows Security scan and investigate the installation.

Modern Microsoft 365, Office 2021, and Office 2024
- Save your work and close Office.
- Confirm that you can sign in with the Microsoft account or work or school account associated with the Office license.
- Uninstall Microsoft 365 or Office from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Sign in to Microsoft’s official Microsoft 365 or Office installation page.
- Download and run the installer.
- Keep the same Office bitness unless you have a specific reason to change it.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Open Outlook and test it.
If this is a work-managed computer, reinstall Office through your organization’s deployment source instead of using a personal installer.
Office 2010
Office 2010 is out of support and Microsoft no longer provides it as a normal download. A legitimate reinstall generally requires the original installation media and product key. Follow Microsoft’s Office 2010 installation guidance, then apply the architecture that matches the existing Outlook setup.
Do not replace unsupported Office 2010 files with a newer exsec32.dll. The version, dependencies, and surrounding Office files must match.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
exsec32.dll belongs to Office, so SFC and DISM are not direct Office DLL download or repair tools. Use them when Office repair or installation fails because Windows servicing may also be damaged.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the permission prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows. Run Office Online Repair again after these commands if the original repair failed.
Success means DISM or SFC completes without an unrepairable error, and Office repair or installation can complete normally. If SFC reports files it could not repair, review the result, restart Windows, and retry Office repair. These commands do not guarantee that they will restore exsec32.dll directly.
If repeatedly hunting through repair commands is becoming the problem, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies problems, while repair requires the full version. It is optional, and repairing or reinstalling the affected Office product remains the definitive fix for this Outlook file.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Fix 6: Check drivers only when the wider system is unstable
A driver is not the normal cause of a missing Office DLL. However, if Office failures began alongside display problems, crashes, storage errors, or other Windows instability, check Device Manager after repairing Office.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories with warning icons, especially Display adapters, Storage controllers, and System devices.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- Test Outlook again.
Do not remove or replace random drivers merely because Outlook reports exsec32.dll. If Device Manager shows no warning icons, return to Office repair and installation checks.
If manually identifying an outdated driver is slowing down broader troubleshooting, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver versions; its free scan shows what is outdated, while driver installation requires the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace repairing the Office installation that owns exsec32.dll.
Fix 7: Repair the Outlook profile after the DLL is restored
A damaged Outlook profile or PST/OST file usually does not cause a missing Office DLL, but both problems can occur together.
First confirm that Outlook starts after Office repair or reinstall. If it opens but cannot connect or display mail:
- Open Outlook.
- Select File > Account Settings > Account Settings.
- Open the Email tab.
- Select the account.
- Choose Repair, if available.
- Follow the prompts and restart Outlook.
For a profile problem:
- Close Outlook.
- Open Control Panel.
- Search for Mail.
- Select Mail (Microsoft Outlook).
- Choose Show Profiles.
- Select Add.
- Create a new profile.
- Set it as the profile to use.
- Start Outlook and test again.
Use Microsoft’s guidance for repairing an Outlook profile or repairing Outlook data files.

What not to do
Do not download exsec32.dll from a random DLL site
A standalone download can contain malware, the wrong Office version, the wrong architecture, or a modified file. Even a clean file with the correct name may not match the installed Office build or dependencies. It often leaves the damaged installation unchanged.
Use Office repair, the Microsoft installation source associated with your license, or your organization’s deployment source.
Do not copy it to System32 or SysWOW64
The error’s reference to a “path” does not mean Windows expects the file in a system directory. exsec32.dll is an Office-owned component and should remain with the matching Office files.
Do not run regsvr32 as a routine fix
regsvr32 applies to DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It does not replace a missing file, repair corrupted Office files, or correct a mismatched architecture. Running it against this file is not the normal solution.
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET for this error
There is no evidence that exsec32.dll is one of those redistributable components. Install those packages only when a separate, specific application error requires them.
Do not use Windows Features to add Outlook
The Turn Windows features on or off dialog manages Windows components, not the missing files of a Microsoft Office installation. It will not restore exsec32.dll.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the error keeps returning
If the file disappears after every repair, investigate the cause rather than replacing it repeatedly:
- Recheck Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history.
- Review any third-party antivirus quarantine or event log.
- Confirm that the Office installation directory has not been redirected, cleaned, or blocked by permissions.
- Check disk health if files are disappearing or installations fail.
- Review Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application for repeated Office or disk errors.
- Test Outlook under a new Windows user profile.
- If all users are affected, prioritize Office installation, security software, storage, and system integrity.
- If only one user is affected, repair the Outlook or Windows user profile after Office is confirmed healthy.
System Restore can be considered when the failure began immediately after a known update or installation, but it may roll back unrelated applications and settings.

FAQ
Is exsec32.dll a legitimate file?
Yes. Microsoft Outlook security update documentation lists exsec32.dll as an Outlook file, including x86 and x64 builds.
Does exsec32.dll belong to Windows?
No. It is associated with Microsoft Outlook and Office, not a normal Windows system component.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat does digsig32 mean?
digsig32 is the internal or original name associated with the file. Its unsupported expansion should not be treated as the official meaning of the name.
Should I register exsec32.dll?
No. regsvr32 is not the normal repair method for this missing or damaged Office component.
Can I copy the file from another computer?
No. The other computer may have a different Office edition, update level, architecture, signature, or dependency set. Repair the matching Office installation instead.
What if Outlook is not installed?
If an unrelated application requests exsec32.dll, first verify that the message is genuine and identify the requesting executable. Do not download the file to satisfy it. A program falsely requesting an Office DLL may itself be damaged, incorrectly installed, or untrusted.
What is the correct fix when Office repair fails?
Confirm the Office bitness, check antivirus quarantine, run DISM and SFC for broader Windows servicing problems, then uninstall and reinstall the same licensed Office product from Microsoft or your organization’s deployment source.
