“ext-ms-win-font-fontgroups-l1-1-0.dll” was not found
The ext-ms-win-font-fontgroups-l1-1-0.dll error usually appears when Windows cannot resolve an API-set contract required while an application or game starts. It is a Microsoft Windows contract name, not a normal game DLL and not a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET redistributable.
Do not download this filename from a random DLL website. API-set names are logical loader contracts, so the physical Windows component satisfying the contract can differ between Windows versions. Copying an old or mismatched file into System32, SysWOW64, or the game folder can create more loader problems and security risks.

Which fix applies to you
- Several programs fail with similar errors: repair Windows with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
- Only one game or application fails: repair or reinstall that application after repairing Windows.
- The error began after antivirus detection: check Windows Security Protection history.
- The problem started after an update, upgrade, or cleanup: complete Windows Update and consider Windows’ repair-reinstall option.
- Only an old 32-bit program fails: suspect application compatibility or an incomplete installation. Do not substitute a random 32-bit DLL for a 64-bit Windows component.
- The program starts but crashes during graphics or system changes: update Windows and the relevant drivers, but do not treat a graphics driver as the confirmed owner of this file.
What this filename actually is
Microsoft describes API sets as logical contract names used by the Windows loader. An application links against the contract, and Windows maps that contract to an implementation available on that particular system. Names beginning with ext- represent extended API contracts that may not exist on every Windows edition.
The contract is associated with Windows font-group functionality. On current Windows installations, related physical components can include fontgroupsoverride.dll and Windows.Globalization.Fontgroups.dll under C:WindowsSystem32, but the mapping is version-dependent. Neither should be treated as a universal drop-in replacement for ext-ms-win-font-fontgroups-l1-1-0.dll. See Microsoft’s Windows API sets documentation.

- 3. READY-TO-USE BOOTABLE USB Reusable installation and recovery media that helps eliminate the need to download large system files or create bootable media yourself. Insert the USB drive, open the computer’s boot menu and select the appropriate installation or recovery option.
- 4. HELP KEEP OLDER PCS USEFUL Refresh, reinstall or maintain a compatible older computer before deciding whether replacement is necessary. Suitable for home computers, office workstations, PC enthusiasts and technicians who regularly work with supported systems.
- 5. IMPORTANT COMPATIBILITY & LICENSE INFORMATION Supports compatible 64-bit computers with UEFI or Legacy BIOS USB booting. No Windows license, activation key or product key is included. Activation may require an existing digital license or a separately purchased valid product key. Back up important files before installation or repair.
This also explains why searching for the exact filename can be misleading. A missing contract message does not always mean that a file with that exact name should be copied back. It can indicate a damaged Windows component, a missing dependency, an incompatible application, or a loader failure elsewhere.
Fix 1: Update Windows, then repair its components
This is the safest first repair when more than one application is affected.
Install pending updates
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Try the affected application again.
An incomplete update or servicing operation can leave Windows components in an inconsistent state. Updating and restarting allows Windows to finish pending component work before you run the repair commands.
Run DISM and SFC
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Enter this command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
DISM repairs the Windows component store that supplies system files. SFC checks protected Windows resources against that repaired store. Microsoft documents both processes in its guides for repairing a Windows image and using System File Checker.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchA successful result means the application starts normally, or the error changes to identify a different missing dependency. SFC may report that it found and repaired corrupt files, but it does not promise to restore this exact contract filename on every Windows build.
If SFC says it could not repair some files, restart, run DISM again, and run SFC once more. If DISM cannot find the source files, use Microsoft’s Windows corruption repair guidance for a compatible installation or network repair source. The source must closely match your installed Windows version.
Repeating SFC and DISM manually can be tedious when you do not know which component changed or whether the repair completed cleanly. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows problems and identify repair targets; its free scan shows what it finds, while repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and repairing or reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when only that program is damaged.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If Windows repair completes and only one game or application still reports the error, the application installation may be incomplete or incompatible.
Use Windows’ built-in repair option
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Click Repair, if that option is available.
- Start the application again.
Repair normally preserves the application’s settings and user data. If there is no Repair button, or if repair changes nothing, use the application’s own launcher option:
- In a game launcher, look for Verify, Verify integrity, Scan and repair, or Repair installation.
- In a Microsoft Store application, open its Advanced options and use Repair or Reset as appropriate.
- For a conventional desktop program, uninstall it through Settings > Apps > Installed apps, restart, and install a fresh copy from the publisher’s official installer.
Do not assume that the application owns this Windows API contract simply because it is the program displaying the error. A damaged application can request a Windows contract incorrectly, but restoring the program and its supported dependencies is safer than copying a DLL beside its executable.
Check compatibility for an older program
- Right-click the application shortcut or executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run compatibility troubleshooter, or enable compatibility mode for a known older Windows version.
- Click Apply, then OK.
- Test the application.
Use compatibility mode only for genuinely old software. It does not repair Windows files, and it is not a reason to install an arbitrary DLL.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security before restoring anything
If the problem started immediately after an antivirus scan, Windows Security may have quarantined a file or blocked an application component.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the error began.
- Open a relevant entry to see its path, detection name, and action.
- Do not restore or allow the file unless its origin and digital signature are verified.
Microsoft warns that allowing a genuine threat can put the device at risk. Use Microsoft’s Protection history guidance before changing a quarantine decision.
If the file was inside the application’s installation directory, reinstall the application from its official source rather than restoring the quarantined copy. If it was under a Windows system directory, repair Windows first and investigate the detection carefully. Do not disable antivirus merely to obtain a replacement DLL.
Fix 4: Update Windows drivers only when the symptoms point there
There is no verified evidence that this API-set contract belongs to a particular graphics driver. Driver maintenance is therefore a secondary step, not the first answer to this error.
Check drivers when the application also shows display crashes, hardware initialization failures, or problems that began after a driver change.
Update through Windows Update
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Advanced options.
- Choose Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates, if available.
- Select the relevant update.
- Click Download and install.
- Restart Windows.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or another relevant category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
For a clean graphics-driver repair, download the current driver only from the GPU manufacturer’s official support page, select the clean-install option when offered, and restart. Do not install a driver package solely because its installer mentions a font or API component.
Finding the correct driver manually can mean checking hardware IDs, operating-system architecture, and several package branches. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for reported driver issues and show which versions need attention; its free scan identifies problems, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional and does not replace repairing the affected application.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
Do not run this as a routine fix:
regsvr32 ext-ms-win-font-fontgroups-l1-1-0.dll
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM DLLs. An API-set contract or ordinary Windows runtime component is not generally a COM in-process server, so registration does not restore loader mappings or repair the component store. The command commonly returns a registration or entry-point error.

System32, SysWOW64, and architecture checks
On 64-bit Windows:
C:WindowsSystem32contains 64-bit system binaries.C:WindowsSysWOW64contains 32-bit system binaries.
The directory names are confusing, but they are not interchangeable. Do not copy a historical 32-bit file into System32, move a 64-bit file into SysWOW64, or place either one in a game directory.
To check your Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > About.
- Check System type.
A historical Windows 8.1 inventory lists a small 32-bit API-set stub, but that old metadata is not a universal specification for Windows 10 or Windows 11. Modern Windows uses version-specific system components, and the exact contract-to-host mapping can change.
Fix 5: Reinstall the current Windows version
If DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows, and several applications are affected, use a broader Windows repair.
On Windows 11, where supported:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
- Restart when Windows finishes.
This reinstalls the same Windows version while preserving applications, personal files, and settings according to Microsoft’s current-version reinstall guidance.

For a problem that began after a recent system change, System Restore may be appropriate:
- Open Start.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs and confirm the restore.
System Restore can reverse recent driver, software, and system-setting changes without removing personal files. Use it only after saving current work and understanding which applications may be rolled back. Microsoft provides additional System Restore instructions.
A reset or clean reinstall is a last resort. Back up personal files first and confirm that application saves, licenses, and installers are available.
What to tell support
If the error remains, record:
- The complete error text.
- Whether it says missing, not found, could not be loaded, or entry point not found.
- Your Windows edition, version, and build.
- The exact application or game.
- Whether one program or several programs fail.
- Whether the file exists under
System32orSysWOW64. - What changed immediately before the error.
- The final DISM and SFC result.
- Any Windows Security Protection history entry.
“Module not found” can also mean that a dependency of the named module is missing. The filename alone does not identify a specific game, update, driver, malware family, or installer as the cause.

Is ext-ms-win-font-fontgroups-l1-1-0.dll part of Windows?
Yes. It is a Microsoft Windows API-set contract associated with font-group functionality. It is not necessarily a standalone physical DLL that must appear under that exact name on every Windows installation.
Is it a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET file?
There is no verified evidence supporting that classification. Repair Windows first, then repair the application that reports the error.
Should I download the DLL manually?
No. Random DLL downloads can contain malware, use the wrong Windows build, have the wrong architecture, or fail to repair the underlying component. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, and the official installer for the affected application.
Can I copy fontgroupsoverride.dll over it?
No. Related host components are version-dependent and are not universal replacements for the API-set contract.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Is there a 64-bit version?
Do not assume a universal answer. Historical listings identify a 32-bit Windows 8.1 stub, while current 64-bit Windows resolves contracts through version-specific system components.
Why does only one game fail?
The game may have an incomplete installation, an outdated compatibility layer, or a missing dependency. Repair or verify its files, then reinstall it from the official launcher if necessary.
Will regsvr32 fix the error?
Normally no. API-set contracts are not generally COM servers and do not need manual registration.
