Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →microsoftaccounttokenprovider.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component involved in account authentication, not a game-specific DLL that should be downloaded into an installation folder. When Windows says it is missing or cannot load it, repair Windows through Windows Update, DISM, and SFC before considering application-level or recovery fixes.
What this file actually does
Microsoft documents MicrosoftAccountTokenProvider.dll as the DLL that implements IProofOfPossessionCookieInfoManager. That Windows interface retrieves proof-of-possession cookie information for a URI, supporting account authentication and Web Account Manager-related operations. See Microsoft’s IProofOfPossessionCookieInfoManager documentation.
The file normally belongs in a Windows system directory, particularly:
C:WindowsSystem32
Windows servicing documentation also identifies x64 and x86 copies in supported Windows files. A 32-bit DLL and a 64-bit DLL are not interchangeable, even when they have the same filename. The correct copy must match both the Windows architecture and the installed build.

That is why copying the file beside a game or application is usually the wrong repair. The program that displays the error may only be the first component to request an authentication service that is already damaged or missing in Windows.
Microsoft has not identified a standalone Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET redistributable that installs this DLL. Repairing those packages is therefore not the normal solution.
Causes matched to symptoms
| Symptom or situation | Most likely explanation | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| Error appears after Windows Update or an upgrade | Interrupted servicing or damaged component files | Install updates, restart, then run DISM and SFC |
| A Microsoft Store app fails to open | Damaged app package or Windows account component | Update, repair, reset, or reinstall the app |
| Defender reports the DLL | The file may have been quarantined, or detection may be incorrect | Check Protection history before restoring anything |
| “The specified module could not be found” | A dependency of the DLL may be missing, not necessarily the named file | Repair Windows and inspect Event Viewer |
| Error began after a cleaner or optimizer ran | Protected system files may have been removed | Undo the utility if possible, then use DISM and SFC |
| Only one older desktop program fails | The program may be exposing a Windows authentication problem | Repair the program, then repair Windows if needed |
| Error follows disk problems or crashes | Filesystem or component-store corruption | Back up data and investigate drive health |
Fix Windows Update and repair the component store
This is the safest first repair because the DLL is part of Windows servicing rather than a normal application runtime.
1. Install pending updates
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- On Windows 11, select Check for updates. On Windows 10, open Update & Security > Windows Update, then select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if the update screen does not insist on it.
- Check for updates again after restarting.
Try the program that produced the error. If the message remains, continue with DISM and SFC.
2. Run DISM, then SFC
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart the computer when SFC finishes.
The order matters. DISM repairs the Windows component source that SFC relies on. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies from that repaired source. Microsoft provides the procedure in its System File Checker guidance.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test the affected program. If it says it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, run DISM again after confirming that Windows Update works, then repeat SFC.
If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, Microsoft documents using a matching repair source:

Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention, while repairs require the full version; it is optional, and DISM/SFC remain the appropriate built-in path.
Check whether Defender quarantined the file
A missing file may have been removed by Microsoft Defender or another security product.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Privacy & security > Windows Security on Windows 11. On Windows 10, select Update & Security > Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for a detection involving
MicrosoftAccountTokenProvider.dll. - Open the entry and review its original path, detection name, and action.
Do not disable Defender simply to make the error disappear. If the file was quarantined, first confirm that the original location was a Windows system directory and that the file has a valid Microsoft digital signature. If the detection appears legitimate, leave it quarantined and repair Windows with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
If you determine that the detection is a false positive, follow Defender’s restoration and allowance controls carefully, then run Windows repair. Microsoft notes that Protection history keeps events for only a limited period, so investigate the entry promptly. Its Protection History documentation explains the available actions.

A file with the right name but no valid Microsoft signature should not be restored automatically. Scan the system and investigate malware or an unsafe cleanup utility instead.
Repair the affected Store app or program
The application that shows the message does not necessarily own the DLL. It may simply be the first application to call Windows account services. Still, repairing that application can fix damaged package files or account integration.
Microsoft Store apps
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update, then install updates and restart.
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library.
- Select Get updates.
- Restart and test the application again.
To repair a specific app in Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected app.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Test the app.
- If Repair does not help, return to the same page and select Reset.
Resetting can remove the app’s local data or sign-in state. Reinstall the app from Microsoft Store if Reset fails. Microsoft’s Store app troubleshooting guidance covers this sequence.

Traditional desktop programs
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Right-click the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change, if offered.
- Complete the installer and restart.
If the program has no repair option, uninstall it, restart, and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer. Do not place a downloaded DLL in the program folder. If reinstalling the program does not help, return to Windows Update, DISM, and SFC because the application may only be exposing the underlying system problem.
Understand the error wording
These messages point to related problems but do not prove that the named DLL alone is defective:
- “The program can’t start because MicrosoftAccountTokenProvider.dll is missing from your computer.” Windows or the application cannot find the expected component.
- “The code execution cannot proceed because MicrosoftAccountTokenProvider.dll was not found.” The requested file was not available through the normal Windows search path.
- “Error loading MicrosoftAccountTokenProvider.dll. The specified module could not be found.” This can mean a dependency required by the DLL is missing or damaged.
- “MicrosoftAccountTokenProvider.dll could not be loaded.” Windows found the file but could not initialize it successfully.
- “MicrosoftAccountTokenProvider.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.” The file may be corrupt, incompatible with the installed architecture or build, unsigned, or accompanied by a damaged dependency.
Look at the full message, the application name, and Event Viewer before assuming the filename identifies the root cause.
Check architecture, location, and signature
If you find a file manually, verify it instead of replacing it.
- Open File Explorer and browse to
C:WindowsSystem32. - Right-click
MicrosoftAccountTokenProvider.dll. - Select Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab.
- Review the signer details and signature status.
- On the Details tab, record the file version without treating an old version as the universal current version.
On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit system components may also be handled through Windows’ compatibility directories. Do not move files between System32 and other folders based on filename alone. Windows servicing knows which architecture and build belong on the machine.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
To investigate a dependency error:
- Open Start, type
Event Viewer, and open it. - Select Windows Logs > Application.
- Look around the time of the failure.
- Review entries naming the application, faulting module, or missing dependency.
This can distinguish a missing Windows file from a broader application or storage problem.
Why manual DLL downloads are unsafe
Do not download an isolated copy from a random DLL repository. It may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, belong to an incompatible Windows build, lack a valid Microsoft signature, or fail to include the dependency that caused the error.

A DLL copied beside an executable can also alter DLL search order and hide the real servicing problem. Copying a replacement into System32 is worse: it can create version, permissions, signature, and Windows Update servicing conflicts.
The safe sources are Windows Update, Microsoft’s built-in component repair, Windows recovery, and a matching Microsoft installation source. There is no identified official standalone redistributable specifically for this DLL.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Do not use regsvr32 as a generic repair
regsvr32 does not restore a missing file or repair the Windows component store. It is intended for DLLs that provide the registration entry points required by that command. Microsoft documents its scope and syntax in the regsvr32 command reference.
Do not register this DLL merely because an error mentions it. Use registration only if a specific Microsoft or application diagnostic explicitly requires it and identifies the correct file and architecture.
Drivers and Windows Features
Graphics-driver reinstallation is not a first-line fix for this account-related Windows component. Only investigate drivers if Device Manager or Event Viewer reports a separate driver problem.
- Right-click Start.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand the device category named by the diagnostic.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Review the General and Driver tabs.
- Use Update driver or uninstall the device only when the separate hardware evidence supports it.
- Restart and install the driver from the hardware manufacturer if necessary.
Manually checking dozens of driver versions can be slow. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers, while driver installation requires the full version; it is optional and not a substitute for Windows component repair.
Do not randomly enable or disable Windows Features. This DLL is not normally repaired by toggling an optional feature. If an application specifically reports a missing Windows feature, open Settings > Optional features or Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows features on or off, enable only the feature documented for that application, and restart.
Escalate when DISM and SFC fail

- Back up important files.
- Consider System Restore if the failure began after a recent update, cleanup operation, or system change.
- Open Start, search for Create a restore point, and open it.
- Select System Restore, choose an appropriate restore point, and review which programs and updates will be affected.
- Complete the restore and test Windows.
System Restore can revert system files, settings, updates, and applications, but it can also undo changes made after the selected restore point. Microsoft explains this in its System Restore guidance.
If no restore point works, use a matching in-place Windows repair installation. If that is unavailable, Reset this PC with the option to retain personal files is the next recovery path, after backing up data and recording application installers and license information.
Also investigate storage health if the error follows crashes, filesystem warnings, or repeated file corruption. SFC may replace the DLL while the underlying disk problem continues.
FAQ
Is microsoftaccounttokenprovider.dll legitimate?
Yes. Microsoft documentation identifies it as the implementing DLL for a Windows proof-of-possession cookie interface. A file with that name outside normal Windows locations or without a valid Microsoft signature deserves investigation.
Should I download the DLL?
No. Restore it through Windows Update, DISM, SFC, or Windows recovery. An isolated download can be malicious or incompatible.
Is it a game dependency?
Not normally. A game or launcher may trigger the error, but the DLL is a Windows account-related component rather than a typical game runtime.
Recommended Free Tools
Will Visual C++ Redistributable fix it?
There is no verified Microsoft redistributable that installs this file. Repair Windows first.
Should I run regsvr32 MicrosoftAccountTokenProvider.dll?
No, not as a general fix. Registration does not replace a missing file or repair Windows servicing.
Why does Windows say the specified module is missing when the DLL is visible?
The message can refer to a dependency required by the named DLL. Repair the component store and inspect Event Viewer rather than copying another file beside the application.
What if only one app still fails?
Repair, reset, or reinstall that app from its official source. If the error persists across multiple programs, treat it as a Windows servicing issue and repeat the system repair path.
