Do not download a replacement DLL into System32; repair or reinstall the Microsoft Visio installation that owns the file.
What this file actually does
facility.dll is associated with Microsoft Visio and is commonly identified as Visio Facilities DLL, developed by Microsoft Corporation. It is an application component used by Visio rather than a normal Windows system library.
Microsoft update manifests list Facility.dll in Visio packages for both 32-bit x86 and 64-bit x64 installations. For example, Microsoft documents the file in a Visio 2010 update and in Visio 2016 updates, with different file versions and sizes depending on the release and architecture. You can verify those entries in Microsoft’s Visio 2010 update manifest and Visio 2016 update manifest.
That distinction matters. A copy of facility.dll from Visio 2010 is not automatically suitable for Visio 2016, Microsoft 365, or another Office generation. Likewise, an x86 file cannot reliably replace the x64 file expected by a 64-bit installation.

You should not normally find this file in:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- A random game directory
- A general Windows DLL cache
Its correct location depends on the installed Visio edition and installation technology. Click-to-Run, MSI, Microsoft Store, volume-license, and subscription installations use different file layouts and repair paths.
Visio can also be installed separately from the main Microsoft 365 suite. Visio Plan 2 includes a desktop application, while Visio Plan 1 is web-only. Microsoft describes these choices on its Visio installation page.
Facility.dll errors and the likely cause
The exact wording depends on which program tried to load Visio and whether Windows found the file but failed to load one of its dependencies.

These are common reported variants rather than an official exhaustive Microsoft error list. In particular, “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that facility.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found it but failed to load a dependency required by that DLL.
Before repairing anything, ask what changed:
- Did the error begin after uninstalling Visio or another Office product?
- Did an Office update, repair, cleanup utility, or failed installation run?
- Did antivirus quarantine a file?
- Did you switch from 32-bit to 64-bit Office?
- Did you install a second Office or Visio generation?
- Does the error appear when Visio starts, or when another application uses Visio?
- Does Visio start with add-ins disabled?
The answer helps separate a damaged application from a broader Windows problem.
Fix 1: Repair Microsoft Visio
Repair is the safest first fix because it restores the complete set of Visio files and dependencies instead of forcing one DLL into an unknown directory.
Click-to-Run Visio or Office
- Save your work and close Visio and other Office applications.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find Microsoft Visio, or the Microsoft Office suite that contains Visio.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Modify.
- Approve the administrator prompt.
- Select Quick Repair.
- Choose Repair and wait for the process to finish.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Visio and reproduce the action that caused the error.
Quick Repair replaces damaged local Office files without requiring a full download. If facility.dll is still missing, repeat the process and select Online Repair instead. Online Repair downloads and rebuilds more of the Office or Visio installation, so it takes longer and may reset more configuration.

If Modify is unavailable: You may have an MSI installation, Microsoft Store installation, administrator-managed deployment, or a damaged product registration. Continue with the Control Panel method or identify the installation source before removing anything.
MSI-based Visio
- Press Windows, type
Control Panel, and open it. - Select Programs.
- Open Programs and Features.
- Select Microsoft Visio or the relevant Office product.
- Choose Change.
- Select Repair.
- Follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows and test Visio again.
Do not repair a different Office product just because it appears near Visio in the list. Select the product that actually installed Visio.
Fix 2: Check the Visio architecture and installation type
A 32-bit and 64-bit Office installation cannot be treated as interchangeable. The same filename can refer to different binaries built for different architectures.

- Open Visio if possible.
- Select File.
- Choose Account.
- Select About Visio.
- Read the architecture shown in the dialog, such as 32-bit or 64-bit.
If Visio will not open:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Inspect the Visio or Office entry.
- Look for details identifying Click-to-Run, Microsoft Store, or another deployment type.
- Check whether another Office generation is installed.
Visio 2010 and Visio 2016 update records demonstrate that Microsoft ships separate x86 and x64 builds. Later servicing updates also use different file versions for different releases. There is no single universal facility.dll version that is correct for every Visio edition.
Common mismatch situations include:
- Installing 32-bit Visio beside 64-bit Office components.
- Leaving an older MSI Office product installed while adding Click-to-Run Visio.
- Copying files from Visio 2010 into a Visio 2016 directory.
- Restoring a file from another computer with a different Office architecture.
- Removing one Office product while shared components are still registered.
The definitive repair is to use the same architecture and installation channel for the complete Office and Visio deployment. If the configuration is mixed, uninstall the conflicting product through the supported Microsoft process, restart, and reinstall Visio from Microsoft’s official installation instructions.
Fix 3: Update Visio, then repair again
A failed update can leave files from different servicing levels together. Updating and repairing the same installation lets Microsoft’s installer restore a consistent set.
- Open Visio.
- Select File.
- Choose Account.
- Select Update Options.
- Click Update Now.
- Wait for the update to finish.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Visio.
- If the error remains, run Quick Repair or Online Repair again.
Microsoft explains this process in its Office update guidance.
If Update Options is missing, updates may be controlled by an administrator, policy, or a volume-license deployment. Do not try to force an unrelated Office update package onto the installation. Contact the administrator or use the deployment method that originally installed Visio.
Fix 4: Check antivirus Protection History
If facility.dll disappeared immediately after a security scan, quarantine is a plausible cause. Do not restore it solely because the filename appears in an error message. First verify the path and the owning product.

- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Open the detection related to Visio.
- Inspect the original file path.
- Confirm that the path belongs to the installed Microsoft Visio or Office directory.
- Check the detection details and publisher information.
- Restore the file only if the file is verified as part of the genuine Visio installation and the detection is a false positive.
- Run Visio repair after restoring it.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined file makes it available to run again. Do not broadly disable antivirus protection or create an exclusion just to suppress the error. If the file was located in a temporary folder, an unfamiliar application directory, or a directory created by a DLL download, do not restore it.
Protection History retains events for only a limited period, so an older quarantine event may no longer be visible. If the record is gone, repair or reinstall Visio rather than trying to recover an unverified binary. Microsoft’s Protection History documentation explains the feature and its limitations.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when Windows is also damaged
facility.dll belongs to Visio, not to the Windows component store. Therefore, SFC is not the primary repair for this specific missing file.
Use Windows repair commands when you also see symptoms such as broken Windows features, repeated system-file errors, failed updates, damaged servicing, or Office repair behaving unexpectedly.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Run Visio repair again if the error remains.
Microsoft specifically recommends running DISM before SFC in its System File Checker guidance.

How to tell it worked: DISM completes successfully, SFC reports that it repaired files or found no integrity violations, and Windows features that were also failing begin working normally.
If it fails: Record the exact DISM or SFC message. A component-store error, pending update, insufficient permissions, or storage problem may need separate repair. Do not repeatedly run SFC as a substitute for reinstalling Visio.

Fix 6: Test Visio without add-ins
If Visio starts but crashes when opening a specific document or feature, the DLL may not be the only problem. An add-in, damaged profile, or integration may be triggering the load failure.

- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
visio /safe
- Press Enter.
- Open the affected file or repeat the failing action.
If Visio works in Safe Mode, disable add-ins:
- Open Visio normally.
- Select File > Options.
- Choose Add-ins.
- At the bottom, select COM Add-ins from the Manage menu.
- Click Go.
- Clear recently installed or suspicious add-ins.
- Restart Visio and test again.
Safe Mode does not restore a missing DLL. It only helps determine whether startup extensions or profile configuration are involved. Microsoft describes Office Safe Mode in its Office troubleshooting documentation.

Use a complete reinstall when Online Repair fails, the installation is visibly incomplete, or Office products have been mixed and cannot be repaired consistently.
Before uninstalling, confirm that you have:
- The Microsoft account or product key used for Visio
- Any required organization sign-in
- Your Visio documents backed up
- The correct 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- Information about whether Visio is standalone, subscription-based, MSI, or Click-to-Run
Then:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Uninstall Microsoft Visio or the Office product that owns it.
- Restart Windows.
- Sign in through Microsoft’s official Visio installation route.
- Download the installer for the same product and architecture.
- Install Visio.
- Apply available updates.
- Restart again.
- Test the application.
If Visio is managed by a company or school, do not remove it without approval. The administrator may need to redeploy the correct Office channel.
A clean reinstall replaces the complete program set. It is safer than copying facility.dll because the installer also restores manifests, dependencies, registry entries, servicing metadata, and the correct architecture.
Fix 8: Use System Restore after a known system change
If the error began immediately after a driver installation, application cleanup, Office change, or other system modification, System Restore may return Windows to an earlier working configuration.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select an appropriate restore point from before the error began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore.
- Let Windows restart and complete the process.
- Test Visio.
System Restore does not guarantee recovery, and it may not be available if protection was disabled or no suitable restore point exists. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore documentation.
Driver checks are only for a wider system problem
A display or chipset driver is not the normal owner of facility.dll. Do not install a driver merely because Visio reports this file. Driver troubleshooting is appropriate when the DLL error appeared alongside graphics corruption, device failures, crashes in several applications, or a recent hardware-driver change.
To check drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, System devices, and any category showing a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Choose Properties.
- Read the status on the General tab.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Use Roll Back Driver if the problem began immediately after an update, or Update Driver when a verified newer driver is available.
- Restart Windows.
Do not use Device Manager to search for facility.dll; it cannot repair a Visio application file.

Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 facility.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no evidence that facility.dll is a self-registering COM server. Running the command may produce another error, such as a missing entry point or architecture mismatch, without repairing Visio.

Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains what the command is designed to register. For this file, the installer should restore the correct registration and supporting files.
Why downloading facility.dll is unsafe
A standalone DLL download can introduce several problems:
- The file may contain malware or unwanted modifications.
- It may belong to another Visio generation.
- It may be x86 when your installation requires x64, or the reverse.
- It may have a different servicing level from the rest of Office.
- Windows may be missing a dependency even after the copy.
- The copy may be placed in the wrong directory.
- Future Visio updates may overwrite or reject it.
- It can hide the real cause, such as a damaged installation or quarantine event.
Never copy a downloaded facility.dll into System32, SysWOW64, or a Visio folder. Use Microsoft’s Visio installer, Office repair, Protection History, and Windows repair tools instead.

Is facility.dll a Windows file?
No. It is a Microsoft Visio application component. Microsoft’s Visio update manifests list the file, but there is no evidence that it belongs in the standard Windows system directories.

Yes. A third-party application or add-in can load a Visio component without visibly opening the main Visio window. Identify the program shown in the error before changing files.
Should I run SFC first?
Not normally. Start with Visio repair. Run DISM followed by SFC when Windows itself shows corruption or when Office repair fails unexpectedly.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
There is no established evidence that those redistributables are the normal fix for this particular Visio DLL. Install them only when separate diagnostic evidence identifies a missing dependency.
What if reinstalling Visio does not help?
Check for mixed x86/x64 or MSI and Click-to-Run installations, inspect antivirus history, test Safe Mode, run DISM and SFC for broader corruption, and consider System Restore. If the error persists, the exact calling application and file path are important evidence for Microsoft support.
