hpfiew73.dll Missing: Trace HP DeskJet Startup Failures

hpfiew73.dll errors usually point to damaged or incomplete HP DeskJet software, not a missing Windows component. If hpfiew73.dll is missing, not found, or cannot be loaded, identify the HP program requesting it before replacing anything.

Start with this diagnostic checklist

Before changing files, record:

  • Which program shows the error: HP Printer Assistant, an HP scanning utility, a startup item, or the application that sends a print job.
  • When it appears: during Windows sign-in, when opening HP software, or only when printing or scanning.
  • The requesting executable: note the program name in the error or Task Manager. The executable determines which HP package needs repair.
  • Your printer model: find the exact DeskJet model on the printer label, its control panel, or Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
  • How HP software was installed: HP’s installer, Windows setup, an original CD, Windows Update, or an unofficial download.
  • System architecture: open Settings > System > About and check System type. Do not assume that a 64-bit version of Windows should use a 64-bit copy of every HP file.

Public file catalogs describe hpfiew73.dll as the Matterhorn Image Enhancement Module, associated with HP DeskJet and Hewlett-Packard Company. Catalogs list a reported version of 0.3.6.1, an approximate size of 270,336 bytes, and often label it as 32-bit, but HP has not publicly verified the exact version, path, supported models, or architecture for this filename. Other catalogs conflict about its architecture.

That means the filename alone is not enough to identify the correct download. The safest repair is to restore the HP package that originally installed it.

Fix 1: Reinstall the exact HP printer software

This is the most likely solution for a missing or damaged hpfiew73.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HP printer software can be left incomplete after a Windows upgrade, a failed update, disk cleanup, antivirus quarantine, printer replacement, or an interrupted uninstall. Older HP utilities may also remain registered after the main driver has been removed.

Remove the old HP software

  1. Disconnect the printer from USB. If it is network-connected, temporarily turn it off or disconnect it from the network.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps > Apps & features in Windows 10.
  4. Search for entries beginning with HP, Hewlett-Packard, DeskJet, HP Printer Assistant, or the printer’s model name.
  5. Select the relevant entry, choose the three-dot menu, and click Uninstall.
  6. Follow the HP removal wizard. Remove the printer software and its associated components when the wizard offers that choice.
  7. Restart Windows.

If the HP software is not listed in Settings, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features and remove the HP printer package there.

After restarting:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Devices and Printers.
  3. Right-click the affected printer and choose Remove device.
  4. If Windows reports that the printer is in use, restart again and repeat the removal.
  5. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners and remove any remaining entry for that printer.

Do not delete hpfiew73.dll manually from a folder to prepare for reinstallation. The installer needs to determine which files, services, and dependencies belong together.

Install the correct package

  1. Go to HP’s official printer software and driver support area.
  2. Search for the exact DeskJet model, including any suffix or regional variation.
  3. Select the installed Windows version when HP asks for it.
  4. Prefer the newest model-specific full-feature software or HP setup package that HP provides.
  5. Run the downloaded installer.
  6. Reconnect or power on the printer only when the installer requests it.
  7. Complete printer detection and print a test page.

If HP provides only a basic or generic driver for the model, some older HP utilities may not be available. A generic Windows driver can restore printing while leaving legacy HP features unavailable. That is an indication of software support limits, not proof that hpfiew73.dll should be copied into a Windows folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to tell whether this worked

The repair is successful when:

  • The HP application opens without the DLL message.
  • Windows can print a test page.
  • Scanning works if your model supports it.
  • The same error does not return after restarting Windows.
  • The HP installer completes without reporting a missing module.

If the error returns immediately after a clean installation, continue with the quarantine and compatibility checks below rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

Fix 2: Check whether antivirus removed the file

Security software can quarantine an older HP component, especially after a definition update or a change to the installation directory.

Check Windows Security

  1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Click Protection history.
  4. Review entries from the time hpfiew73.dll disappeared.
  5. Expand any event involving an HP program or the folder where the HP software was installed.

Do not restore the file solely because its name contains “HP.” A DLL with familiar metadata can still be altered or placed in an unsafe directory.

Restore a quarantined file only when all of these conditions are satisfied:

  • 3 MONTHS OF INSTANT INK WITH HP+ ACTIVATION – Subscribe to Instant Ink delivery service to get ink delivered directly to your door before you run out. After 3 months, monthly fee applies unless cancelled.
  • The file came from a legitimate HP installation.
  • The quarantine event identifies the correct HP program.
  • The file was not downloaded separately.
  • A current security scan finds no broader infection.
  • Your security product confirms that the detection was a false positive.

The safer approach is usually to remove the damaged HP package and reinstall it from HP. If security software quarantines the file again, stop reinstalling and investigate the detection before adding an exclusion.

Fix 3: Identify stale HP startup software

Sometimes the printer still works, but an old HP utility runs at sign-in and requests hpfiew73.dll.

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for HP, DeskJet, printer assistant, imaging, or scanning entries.
  4. Select an obsolete entry and click Disable.
  5. Restart Windows.

If the error disappears but printing still works, the failing component may be an old startup helper rather than the current printer driver. Do not disable a current HP service permanently until you have confirmed which executable is requesting the DLL.

To investigate further:

  1. Open Task Manager and select Details.
  2. Right-click a likely HP process and select Open file location.
  3. Check the folder and executable name.
  4. Use that name when selecting the HP package to uninstall and reinstall.

Multiple HP packages can coexist after printer upgrades. Remove software for printers you no longer use, then reinstall only the package for the current model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Check compatibility and architecture

A 32-bit HP application can require a 32-bit DLL even when Windows is 64-bit. The DLL belongs in the application or driver directory selected by the HP installer, not automatically in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Check the Windows installation:

  1. Open Settings > System > About.
  2. Read System type.
  3. Note whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit.

Then check the HP application:

  1. Open Task Manager.
  2. Select Details.
  3. Right-click the relevant HP executable and choose Properties.
  4. Select the Details tab and record the product name and publisher.
  5. Use the exact product and printer model when obtaining the replacement package.

Do not treat public catalog labels as definitive proof of the file’s architecture. Catalogs disagree, and a catalog’s reported bitness does not establish that a particular copy is genuine or compatible.

“The specified module could not be found” can also mean that hpfiew73.dll exists but a dependency used by it is missing. In that situation, copying the visible DLL elsewhere will not solve the dependency failure. Reinstall the complete HP package so its related files are restored together.

Fix 5: Update the printer driver through Windows

Use Windows Update or Device Manager when the problem began after a driver change, or when HP does not offer a current package for the model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Rank #3

Use Windows Update

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Click Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Open Advanced options > Optional updates > Driver updates, if the section is present.
  6. Install a printer-related update that matches your model.
  7. Restart Windows and test printing.

Windows Update may provide a functional printer driver without restoring older HP-only utilities. If the error specifically names an HP application, reinstall that application from HP as well.

Use Device Manager

  1. Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Printers, Print queues, and, if present, Imaging devices.
  3. Right-click the affected printer.
  4. Select Update driver.
  5. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  6. Restart Windows after installation.

If the device has a warning icon:

  1. Right-click it and choose Uninstall device.
  2. Confirm the removal.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Reinstall the correct HP package.

Do not use Device Manager to force a driver intended for a different DeskJet model. Similar model names do not guarantee compatible imaging modules.

When manually hunting through Windows Update and several HP driver packages becomes repetitive, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for stale drivers and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation through the full version is optional. For this file, reinstalling the exact HP printer software remains the definitive fix when the HP application itself is missing the DLL.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when Windows corruption is suspected

hpfiew73.dll is associated with HP software, so System File Checker is not normally the primary repair. SFC repairs protected Windows files and is not a reliable way to restore a third-party DLL removed from an HP package.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use these commands when the failure began after a failed Windows upgrade, system corruption, repeated component errors, or other Windows-wide problems.

  1. Open Start and search for Command Prompt.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  3. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  4. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test the HP software again.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If either command reports that it could not complete, restart Windows, install pending updates, and run the commands again. If both complete successfully but the HP error remains, return to the clean HP reinstall rather than repeatedly running SFC.

If manually interpreting DISM and SFC output is slowing down the repair, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for Windows issues and show what it identifies; its free scan reports findings, while repair through the full version is optional. It is not required, and it does not replace reinstalling the HP program that owns hpfiew73.dll.

Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent change

System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a driver installation, HP update, Windows upgrade, or other software change and a suitable restore point exists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select Next.
  5. Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
  6. Click Scan for affected programs to review the changes.
  7. Select Next > Finish.
  8. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore normally reverts system files, registry settings, and installed programs without changing personal files. It may remove a later driver or HP package, so reinstall the correct HP software afterward if necessary.

What not to do

Do not download the DLL from a random website

A separately downloaded hpfiew73.dll may contain malware, the wrong version, the wrong architecture, or no matching dependencies. It can also hide the real problem, such as a damaged HP installation or a quarantined file.

Never copy an unverified DLL into:

  • C:WindowsSystem32
  • C:WindowsSysWOW64
  • Another HP program’s directory
  • A folder chosen only because an error message mentions it

Use the HP installer or a verified enterprise software image instead.

Do not use regsvr32 as a general repair

regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It does not download missing files, repair dependencies, or reinstall printer software. Many application and printer DLLs are not self-registering.

Running a command such as this against hpfiew73.dll is therefore generally inappropriate:

regsvr32 hpfiew73.dll

If an HP installer specifically instructs an administrator to register a component, follow that installer’s documented procedure and use the exact file path it provides. Otherwise, reinstall the package.

Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET at random

This file is identified as an HP printer component, not a Microsoft runtime. Installing unrelated redistributables may add maintenance and security exposure without restoring the missing HP module. Install a runtime only when the HP installer or a clearly identified dependency specifically requires it.

If reinstalling HP software still fails

Work through these checks:

  1. Confirm that the downloaded package matches the exact printer model and Windows version.
  2. Remove old HP packages and duplicate printer entries again.
  3. Restart before reinstalling.
  4. Temporarily disconnect the printer during removal so Windows does not reinstall an old driver automatically.
  5. Check Windows Security Protection history for a new quarantine event.
  6. Review the HP installer log if the setup wizard fails.
  7. Open Event Viewer by searching for it from Start, then check Windows Logs > Application for the failing executable.
  8. Test whether the error occurs in another Windows user account.
  9. Identify the exact program requesting hpfiew73.dll.
  10. If only an old utility fails while printing works, leave the obsolete utility removed and use the current HP or Windows printing workflow.

If HP no longer provides software for the model and only a generic Windows driver is available, printing may remain possible without the legacy HP application. The absence of the old utility is then a software compatibility limitation rather than a reason to install an unverified DLL.

Frequently asked questions

Is hpfiew73.dll a Windows system file?

No verified evidence identifies it as a Windows component. Public metadata associates it with older HP DeskJet software. It should not normally be restored to System32 or SysWOW64.

Which HP DeskJet model uses it?

The filename is associated with HP DeskJet software, but the exact supported printer models and installing package have not been officially documented publicly. Identify the installed model and the requesting executable before choosing a driver.

Is the file 32-bit?

Some catalogs report 32-bit and list version 0.3.6.1 with an approximate size of 270,336 bytes. Other catalogs report conflicting architecture information, so those details are not official verification of every copy.

Will SFC restore hpfiew73.dll?

Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows components. Reinstall the HP printer package to restore an HP application DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I reinstall Microsoft Visual C++?

Usually no. hpfiew73.dll is identified as an HP printer component, not a Microsoft runtime. Install runtimes only when the specific HP installer identifies one as required.

Why does Windows say the specified module could not be found when the file exists?

The DLL may have a missing dependency, or the application may be searching the wrong directory. Reinstall the complete HP package and avoid moving the file manually.

Is the current HP Print Support Application the same thing?

Not necessarily. HP’s newer Print Support Application is a newer architecture and should not be assumed to contain this legacy DLL. Use the software HP provides for the exact printer model.

When should I use Device Manager?

Use it to update or remove the printer device and its driver. It cannot reliably reconstruct an older HP application that depended on hpfiew73.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the safest final fix?

Identify the HP application that requests the file, remove obsolete HP printer software, restart Windows, and install the current model-specific package from HP. If that package does not support the old utility, use the available Windows driver or current HP workflow instead of downloading the DLL separately.
