facompress.dll Load Errors: Rebuild the Right App Safely

facompress.dll is a 32-bit application DLL associated with the FreeArc compression engine, not a Windows system file. The safest fix is to identify the program that needs it, then verify, repair, or reinstall that program instead of downloading the DLL into a Windows folder.

What this file actually does

FreeArc is a compression engine used by archive utilities, portable packages, self-extracting installers, and some game installers. facompress.dll provides compression functionality for software built around that engine. Some builds also use the related facompress_mt.dll file for multithreaded compression.

The file normally stays beside the executable that loads it. It is a private application component, not a shared Windows library. Windows does not normally install it in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Public file records commonly identify it as a PE32, or 32-bit, DLL. The supplied metadata describes a 32-bit file with version 0.0.0.0 and a size of about 0.38 MB, but different FreeArc-based applications can ship different builds. The filename alone cannot identify the owning program.

Possible owners include:

  • FreeArc and FreeArc-based archive tools
  • Portable applications bundled with compression files
  • Self-extracting installers
  • Game installers using FreeArc compression
  • Third-party repackaging or decompression toolchains

A database may associate a copy with a particular game, but that does not prove that every installation of that game uses the file. Always identify the executable and its folder before replacing anything.

Causes and symptoms

Symptom or change Likely cause Best response
The error appears when launching one application The application directory is incomplete Verify, repair, or reinstall that application
The error appears during a game installation The installer’s temporary files are incomplete or damaged Restart the installer from the beginning using legitimate installation media
The file disappeared after a security alert Antivirus quarantine or deletion Check Protection History and validate the source
“The specified module could not be found” remains after restoring the file A dependency of facompress.dll is missing Reinstall the application and its documented prerequisites
“Not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error” Corruption, wrong architecture, or a mismatched build Restore the matching files from the owning application
The problem began after copying only an executable Companion files were left behind Restore the complete application directory
Many unrelated programs fail Broader Windows corruption or malware is possible Scan Windows, then run DISM and SFC

Fix 1: Identify the program that owns the DLL

Do this before downloading or copying any file.

  1. Read the error window carefully. Note the application name and executable name.
  2. Right-click the application shortcut and select Properties.
  3. On the Shortcut tab, read the Target path and Start in folder.
  4. Open that folder in File Explorer.
  5. Search the folder and its subfolders for facompress.dll.
  6. If the error appears during installation, identify the installer executable instead. The DLL may belong to a temporary extraction directory and may never be part of the final installed game or application.

You can also use Task Manager:

  1. Start the affected program until the error appears.
  2. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  3. Open Details.
  4. Right-click the relevant process and choose Open file location, if available.
  5. Record the folder containing the executable.

If you cannot determine the parent program, record the full error text and the executable path. A filename by itself is not enough to select a safe replacement.

Fix 2: Verify or repair the application

File verification is the most likely solution because facompress.dll belongs to the application that installed it.

Microsoft Store or supported Windows apps

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the affected application.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Choose Advanced options.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Start the application again.

If the error remains, return to the same screen and select Reset. Reset can remove application data and settings, so use it only after Repair fails.

Games and launcher-managed software

Open the game launcher and look for a command named Verify, Verify integrity, Repair, or similar. The location varies by launcher, but it is usually available from the game’s menu or properties page.

After verification completes, launch the program again. If the launcher reports that files cannot be repaired, uninstall only the affected application and reinstall it from the publisher, store, or original legitimate media.

  • Combo headphone/microphone jack - Noble Wedge Lock slot - HDMI; 2 USB 3.1 Gen 1
  • Windows 11 Pro

Standalone applications and installers

  1. Close the application.
  2. Uninstall it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Download or obtain the installer from the application publisher, store, or legitimate original media.
  5. Install it into a normal application folder.
  6. Start it again without copying DLLs from another computer.

A clean reinstall restores facompress.dll, related compression files, configuration files, and the correct architecture together.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software may remove a damaged or suspicious copy. The same filename can also be used by malicious software, so do not restore it solely because the error mentions it.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Find the detection involving facompress.dll.
  5. Expand the entry and inspect the full file path.
  6. Confirm that the path belongs to the expected application or installer.
  7. Scan the complete installer and application folder.
  8. Restore the file only when the source is trusted and the detection is a false positive.
  9. If the source is uncertain, leave the file quarantined and reinstall from an official source.

If the file is removed again immediately after reinstalling, stop launching the program and investigate the antivirus detection. A familiar filename is not proof that the file is safe.

Fix 4: Restore the complete matching file set

Do not copy only the executable or combine files from different FreeArc-based applications. The program may require matching versions of:

  • facompress.dll
  • facompress_mt.dll
  • arc.ini
  • unarc components
  • Other compression libraries supplied by the same installer

Restore the complete application directory from a verified backup or reinstall the owning program. Never copy a random DLL into both System32 and `SysWOW64. That can create version conflicts and obscure which application is actually broken.

Fix 5: Check architecture and dependencies

The commonly catalogued facompress.dll is 32-bit. A 32-bit application can load a 32-bit DLL on 64-bit Windows through WoW64. A 64-bit application cannot load a 32-bit DLL.

  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.

To check the application architecture, inspect the publisher’s system requirements or documentation. Do not assume that a 64-bit Windows installation requires a 64-bit copy of every application DLL.

“The specified module could not be found” can also mean that Windows found facompress.dll but could not load one of its dependencies. Reinstall the application’s documented prerequisites first.

facompress.dll is not verified as part of the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. However, a particular old application may depend on a C or C++ runtime. If the publisher specifies one, use Microsoft’s official package and match the application architecture. Microsoft provides vc_redist.x86.exe and vc_redist.x64.exe; installing both may be appropriate when you support both 32-bit and 64-bit applications, but it does not replace reinstalling the owning program.

Do not install a runtime merely because a DLL website recommends it.

Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 for this file

regsvr32 is normally used for self-registering ActiveX or COM libraries. facompress.dll is a compression library, not normally a self-registering component.

Running a command such as:

regsvr32 facompress.dll

does not install the DLL or repair an application that cannot find it. It may produce an entry-point error or make no useful change. Use the application’s installer or repair process instead.

Fix 7: Repair Windows components when other programs are affected

DISM and System File Checker repair protected Windows components. They generally do not recreate an application-owned FreeArc DLL, so use them after repairing the parent program or when several unrelated applications show corruption.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test the affected application again.

If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the application after restarting. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, repeat the process after DISM completes successfully. If only this one application still fails, reinstall that application rather than repeating Windows repair commands indefinitely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When manually repeating DISM and SFC leaves you unsure which component changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system problems; its free scan shows what it identifies, while repair requires the full version. Reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when facompress.dll belongs to that application.

Fix 8: Update or reinstall relevant drivers only when symptoms are broader

A graphics, storage, or chipset driver is not the normal cause of a missing facompress.dll, but driver corruption can accompany wider application crashes or failed installations.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the device category related to the broader failure.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if prompted.

For a broken device, return to the device in Device Manager, select Properties, open the Driver tab, and choose Uninstall Device only when you have a current driver from the hardware manufacturer. Restart Windows and install the correct driver.

When identifying stale drivers manually means checking many hardware vendors and matching versions, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show driver findings; the free scan identifies reported issues, while installation through the full version is optional. A driver update will not replace the matching application files when the failure is limited to one FreeArc-based program.

Fix 9: Use System Restore only after a system-wide change

Use System Restore when the problem began after a driver installation, Windows update, application change, or other system-wide event.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select Next.
  5. Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
  6. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  7. Review the changes.
  8. Select Next, then Finish.
  9. Restart Windows and test the application.

System Restore is not a substitute for reinstalling the program that owns facompress.dll. It also does not guarantee recovery of a deleted application file.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe

An isolated download may have the right filename but the wrong hash, architecture, build, or malicious modification. It may also fail because the real problem is a missing dependency or incomplete installer.

Do not:

  • Download facompress.dll from an unverified DLL index
  • Copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
  • Mix it with files from another FreeArc release
  • Restore it from quarantine without checking its path and detection
  • Copy a temporary installer DLL into Windows
  • Use regsvr32 as a general DLL repair command

Use the application publisher, the relevant store or launcher, legitimate installation media, and official Microsoft support pages for Windows repair and runtime packages.

FAQ

Is facompress.dll a Windows file?

No. It is an application-owned compression DLL associated with FreeArc-based software.

Is it part of Visual C++?

No verified Microsoft source identifies facompress.dll as a Visual C++ Redistributable component. A particular application may still require a C or C++ runtime as a separate dependency.

Should I put it in System32?

No. It normally belongs beside the executable that loads it.

Can I use a 32-bit DLL on 64-bit Windows?

A 32-bit application can use a 32-bit DLL on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit application cannot load a 32-bit DLL. Restore the build supplied with the application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the error say the module is missing when the file exists?

Windows may be reporting a missing dependency of facompress.dll, not the DLL itself. Reinstall the application and its documented prerequisites.

What if the error appears only during setup?

Restart the installer from the beginning using trusted, legitimate installation media. The file may belong only to the installer’s temporary extraction set.

What information should I collect if nothing works?

Record the full error text, executable path, Windows version, application version, installation source, antivirus detection name, and whether facompress.dll exists beside the executable. This distinguishes a missing file from a dependency, quarantine, architecture, or damaged-installer problem.
