“Failed to verify username” means Minecraft could not validate your account with its authentication service. It usually clears after completely restarting the game and launcher, then signing out and back in. If that does not work, check status.mojang.com before changing settings. A service outage cannot be repaired on your computer.

The same message can also come from an account without Java Edition entitlement, a VPN or firewall interfering with authentication, or a server-side proxy and authentication configuration. The steps below separate player problems from server-owner problems so you can test the least destructive possibility first.

What the error actually means
Minecraft Java Edition performs an online account check when you join a server configured with online-mode=true, which is the normal setting. The server asks the authentication system to confirm that the session belongs to a valid purchased profile. “Failed to verify username” appears when that confirmation does not complete or does not match the profile the server expects.
This is an authentication failure, not a message saying that your username is banned, already taken, or invalid as a name. A player can see it even when the name displayed in the launcher is correct. The failure may be caused by an expired local login token, an outage, network filtering, account entitlement, or a server configuration problem.

There is no single official troubleshooting page that assigns one cause to this exact wording. The practical sequence below reflects the causes and remedies repeatedly reported by community troubleshooting guides, with uncertain cases identified rather than treated as proven.
Five-minute triage for a player
Use these checks in order. They begin with reversible actions and avoid changing server security or deleting files.

Close the game window, quit the launcher from its menu, and confirm it is no longer running before opening it again. A launcher left open for a long time can retain an invalid session token.
- Sign out and sign back in. In the launcher, use the account menu to sign out of the Microsoft account, close and reopen the launcher, and authenticate again. This is especially important after switching Microsoft accounts or changing a Microsoft password.
- Check service status. Visit status.mojang.com. If Mojang or Microsoft authentication is experiencing an outage, wait for service recovery instead of repeatedly changing local settings.
- Confirm Java Edition ownership. The server’s online-mode check expects an account with a purchased Java Edition profile. An unofficial or non-premium launcher cannot satisfy that check on a normal online-mode server.
- Test the connection. Restart the router or try a different connection, such as a phone hotspot. Temporarily disconnect a VPN or proxy while testing.
- Bring software up to date. Install available launcher updates and use a supported Java installation. One community guide specifically recommends obtaining Java from Oracle’s official site rather than an untrusted third-party download.
- Test security software carefully. If an antivirus or firewall is blocking the authentication request, briefly disable it only long enough to test, then turn protection back on. If the test identifies the cause, create a Minecraft or launcher exception instead of leaving protection disabled.
If these checks work for other servers but not one particular server, stop changing your computer and tell that server’s administrators which steps you have already completed. The fault may be in the server’s authentication path.
Use the symptom to locate the likely cause

Why Minecraft reaches this error
Stale or invalid login session
This is the most common explanation reported by troubleshooting guides. Launchers keep a session token so you do not have to authenticate for every connection. Leaving the launcher open for a long time, changing Microsoft accounts, or changing the account password can leave the launcher holding a token that the authentication service no longer accepts. The server then receives no valid proof for the displayed username.
A normal game restart may not be enough if the launcher itself remains signed in. That is why a complete launcher exit followed by an explicit sign-out and sign-in is more effective than simply disconnecting from the server.
Authentication-service outage
Minecraft servers in online mode depend on external authentication services. If those services are unavailable or returning errors, a healthy player and a correctly configured server can still produce “Failed to verify username.” The outage is outside the player’s control; local reinstalls and account changes cannot make a remote service respond.

No purchased Java Edition profile
An online-mode server verifies an account against a purchased profile. Unofficial, cracked, or non-premium launchers do not provide the entitlement that the server is checking. The server is doing what its security setting requires, so changing a username or repeatedly refreshing the launcher will not make an unentitled account pass.
Use the official account and launcher associated with the Java Edition purchase. If an account was migrated or several Microsoft accounts exist, verify that the launcher is signed into the account that owns the game rather than merely an account that can sign into Microsoft services.
VPN, proxy, firewall, or unstable connection
The launcher and server need a working path to the authentication and session services. A VPN or proxy can route the request through an address that is blocked, misconfigured, or temporarily unable to reach the service. A firewall or antivirus product can also stop the launcher’s outbound request. Packet loss or an unstable connection may interrupt the check before it completes.
Changing to another connection is a valuable diagnostic because it separates an account problem from a local network path. If a phone hotspot works while the home connection does not, investigate the router, DNS, VPN, proxy, or security policy on the original network.
Proxy or forwarding misconfiguration on a server
Networks using Velocity or BungeeCord put the proxy in the authentication path. The proxy authenticates the player and forwards identity information to a backend server. If the proxy was recently changed, if forwarding settings do not agree, or if the backend is being contacted in a way the proxy does not support, a player can receive a verification error even with a valid account.
This is a server-owner issue, not something a player can repair by reinstalling Java. The owner must trace the connection from the public address through the proxy to the backend and check any recent configuration change.
Player fixes in detail
1. Refresh the launcher session without deleting game data
Close the game, quit the launcher, and reopen it. If the message returns, use the launcher’s account menu to sign out, close the launcher again, then sign in with the Microsoft account that owns Java Edition. Do not delete the .minecraft directory as a first step: that can remove worlds, screenshots, resource packs, and settings without addressing an authentication token.

After signing in, start the intended Java Edition installation and join once. If the account menu shows a different Microsoft account than expected, remove the ambiguity before testing again; two accounts can have different game entitlements even when they use the same computer.
2. Check for an outage before making configuration changes
Open status.mojang.com and look for an incident affecting authentication or session services. Ask another player whether they are seeing the same message, but do not treat a single successful connection as proof that every region or service component is healthy.
When an outage is confirmed, leave your launcher and server settings unchanged and retry after recovery. Repeated sign-outs during an outage can create additional confusion without improving the service response.
3. Verify the account and launcher
Online-mode servers expect an account with a purchased Java Edition profile. Check the account selected in the launcher and make sure it is the account that owns the game. If you are using an unofficial launcher, switch to the official launcher and a legitimate purchased account; an online-mode server is not required to accept an account it cannot verify.

Those servers can use different authentication settings, while the public server’s online-mode check still requires a verifiable profile.
4. Remove network variables one at a time
Disconnect any VPN and proxy, then try again. If the connection is unstable, restart the router and wait for it to reconnect fully. A second connection is a stronger test than restarting the same equipment because it changes the route and often the public IP address.
Do not change several network settings simultaneously if you need to identify the cause. First test with the VPN disconnected. If that fails, test another connection. Only then investigate router filtering, DNS behavior, or a managed network’s firewall policy.

5. Update the launcher and Java runtime
Install updates offered by the launcher and make sure the Java runtime used by the selected installation is supported. A launcher update can repair authentication integration, while an incompatible runtime can prevent the client from completing normal startup or network operations.
When installing Java, use a reputable official distribution source. A community guide recommends Oracle’s official site instead of third-party download sites; avoid installers that bundle unrelated software or modify browser settings.
6. Test antivirus and firewall rules safely
Security software can block the launcher even when ordinary web browsing works. Temporarily disable the relevant firewall or antivirus protection only as a controlled test, launch Minecraft once, and immediately restore protection. If the error disappears during the test, add a narrowly scoped exception for the launcher or Minecraft components and remove the temporary blanket disablement.
If disabling protection changes nothing, turn it back on and pursue the account, outage, or server-side explanations. Leaving security software off is not an acceptable permanent fix.

Start by measuring the scope
Ask whether one player or every player is affected. If at least some players can join, the server is reaching authentication successfully for those accounts; focus on the affected player’s session, entitlement, or network. If everyone fails, inspect the server’s outbound path and any authentication or proxy changes before asking every player to reinstall the game.
Record the first time the problem appeared, the server address players used, and whether the failure began after a restart, host move, firewall change, or proxy update. Those details distinguish a broad service incident from a local configuration regression.
Keep online mode enabled on public standalone servers
Do not set online-mode=false merely to suppress the message. Online mode is the check that matches a joining account to a purchased profile. Disabling it allows accounts that the authentication service cannot verify, including unpaid accounts, to join. It also changes the security assumptions of plugins and player identity handling.

For a public standalone server, restore the normal online-mode setting and solve the authentication path instead. A private test environment may have a different purpose, but it should not be presented as a secure public server when verification is disabled.

Inspect outbound connectivity
The server must be able to reach the authentication and session services. Check host firewall rules, cloud egress policies, DNS resolution, and any recent network change. A server that cannot make outbound verification requests can reject every player even though players can reach the game port.
Compare server logs from a successful and failed attempt if available. Look for a change that coincides with the first failure rather than editing unrelated settings. If the external service is down, revert temporary experiments and wait for recovery.
Audit Velocity or BungeeCord proxy settings
In a proxied network, the public listener, proxy authentication, player-information forwarding, and backend expectations must agree. Review the proxy configuration after upgrades or migrations and confirm that players are entering through the intended proxy rather than connecting directly to a backend that expects forwarded identity data.
A backend that is accidentally exposed or configured with incompatible forwarding can produce verification errors that look like player failures. Test through the normal public address, then test the backend only through the documented administrative path; do not expose a backend publicly as a workaround.
Treat hosts-file edits as an advanced last resort
Some community guides mention editing the operating system’s hosts file. This changes name resolution locally and can send authentication traffic to the wrong address if done incorrectly. Because an erroneous entry can affect more than Minecraft and persist after the original problem is gone, do not add or remove entries unless you know exactly which hostname and address are involved and can restore the previous file.
For most incidents, status verification, outbound-connectivity checks, and proxy review are safer and more informative than hosts-file changes.

What not to do
- Do not assume the username is banned or taken; this message reports failed account verification.
- Do not keep retrying while a confirmed authentication outage is active.
- Do not delete worlds or the entire Minecraft directory before refreshing the launcher account.
- Do not leave antivirus, firewall, or online-mode protections disabled after a test.
- Do not blame a player for a proxy failure when every account is being rejected.
- Do not use an unofficial launcher and expect an online-mode server to verify an account without a purchased Java Edition profile.
When to escalate
Contact the server owner when other players can join but you cannot after a fresh launcher sign-in and a second network test, or when the problem occurs only on that server. Include your Minecraft Java Edition version, the launcher account type, the exact server address, the approximate time of the failure, whether a VPN was enabled, and whether another server works. Do not send your Microsoft password or session token.
Server owners should escalate to their hosting or network administrator when all players fail, outbound connectivity is blocked, or a proxy change introduced the problem. Preserve relevant logs and the previous configuration so a rollback is possible while the authentication service status is checked.
