The April 2024 warning that Fallout 4 runtime 1.10.980 had broken F4SE is historical, not a description of the current release. The F4SE project page currently lists build 0.7.9 for runtime 1.11.240. Before updating a modded game, match F4SE and every required native-code plugin to your exact installed runtime and storefront, and preserve the files and load-order information you may need to recover.
Is F4SE broken right now?
There is no basis for treating the April 2024 emergency as current. At the time of the project-page snapshot on October 11, 2026, F4SE lists build 0.7.9 for Fallout 4 runtime 1.11.240. The same page lists build 0.7.2 for runtime 1.10.984 and build 0.6.23 for runtime 1.10.163. These are runtime-specific pairings, not interchangeable choices.

Check the F4SE project page against the version installed on your PC. The project says it supports the latest Fallout version available on Steam and GOG, but those storefront versions are not necessarily the same. It also says it cannot support the Windows Store release because its locked-down application environment does not expose the APIs script extenders require.
Why “Anniversary Edition” does not identify a compatible build
“Anniversary Edition” is not enough to determine compatibility: the exact runtime number and storefront matter. Bethesda announced Fallout 4 Anniversary Edition on October 23, 2025. Its patch, runtime 1.11.137, released November 10, 2025, and F4SE build 0.7.4 was released to support that patch. The project page now lists a later runtime, 1.11.240, with build 0.7.9. The warning that prompted the “Anniversary Edition all over again” comparison came after the April 25, 2024 update to runtime 1.10.980. In the April 2024 PSA, F4SE author Ian Patterson said the update had broken F4SE and the native-code modding scene, and that he could not yet give a release timeline. That statement describes the situation at the time, not today’s compatibility status. Read the original PSA.
What to verify before updating Fallout 4
- Record your installed runtime and storefront. Use the runtime number shown by your game or mod setup, and note whether you use Steam or GOG. Do not infer the runtime from an edition name.
- Match F4SE to that runtime. Check the project’s version listing and follow its installation guidance. If the game has updated but no matching F4SE build is listed, wait rather than assuming an older build will work.
- Check dependent mods individually. A compatible F4SE release does not guarantee that every native-code plugin or other mod in your setup supports the new runtime. Check each mod’s own page for its supported version before changing the game.
- Choose based on what you need. Updating may be important for a new official patch or Creations changes; staying on a working runtime may better preserve a mod setup whose dependencies have not caught up. There is no single best choice for every player.
Back up the files and setup you may need to restore
Before changing versions, make a copy of Fallout4.exe at minimum; preserving the full game folder in a separate location offers a broader recovery option. Also save relevant mod-manager profile and load-order information. The Steam community guide to F4SE describes copying the executable and assembling an earlier game version in a separate “Fallout Backup” folder. Treat its rollback instructions as community guidance rather than a guarantee that every depot command will work for every setup.

The guide also links to Fallout 4 Auto-Backup, a community tool rather than an official Bethesda product. A separate drive is one possible place to keep a copy; an external SSD is optional, not a requirement.

A Bethesda patch notice reported in August 2026 advised players who had not logged into their save recently to do so, or to manually save their load order before updating. Bethesda said a saved load order would let players redownload their Creations list after the update. This helps with Creations recovery; it does not preserve Fallout4.exe, the full PC installation, or a mod-manager profile. GamesRadar’s report quotes Bethesda’s guidance.

Can you stop Steam from updating a modded game?
The Steam community guide recommends setting updates to occur when the game is launched and launching through F4SE to reduce the chance of an unexpected update disrupting a modded setup. This is risk reduction, not a guarantee that Steam will never patch the game. Keep a separate backup and check current storefront behavior rather than relying on one setting as your only protection. - Confirm the installed Fallout 4 runtime number and storefront.
- Use the F4SE build listed for that exact runtime.
- Verify support for each required plugin and mod before updating.
- Keep a copy of Fallout4.exe or, preferably, the game folder, plus relevant mod-manager profile and load-order information.
- Save the in-game Creations load order separately if you use Creations.
