In Fallout 4, you can find fusion cores at fixed locations, recover them from certain enemies and containers, or buy them from some ammunition merchants. For an early core, check the Museum of Freedom during “When Freedom Calls”; for multiple cores, ArcJet Systems, Robotics Disposal Ground, and the Castle tunnels are useful targets. Access can depend on locks, quest progress, enemies, and whether you own the relevant DLC.
What fusion cores do—and how quickly they drain
Fusion cores power power armor and serve as ammunition for Gatling laser weapons. The community-maintained Fallout Wiki’s mechanics reference estimates about 20 minutes of real-time use, or roughly 10 in-game hours, while jogging at default pace. These are estimates, not a fixed timer: sprinting, V.A.T.S., other AP actions, scoped breath holding, and jet packs use charge faster; walking uses less, and standing still drains none.

You can enter power armor without a core, but movement is limited to slow walking and AP-based actions are unavailable. The same community reference reports that the Repair bobblehead extends core lifespan by 10%, while the Nuclear Physicist perk can slow charge drain by up to 100%. For a Gatling laser, it reports 500 shots per core, potentially increased by perks and the bobblehead. Treat these as community-documented game mechanics rather than official documentation.

These counts and placements are documented by the Fallout Wiki’s location guide, a community-maintained reference rather than an official Bethesda location list. The Museum core is notable because its listed charge is lower than the usual 100% cited by that page.

More base-game locations
The Castle tunnels
The Castle tunnels contain three cores: one at a generator near the chemistry station and two obtained from Sarge. Reaching the tunnels is tied to the Castle area and its quest-state context, so this is not as direct an early detour as the Concord locations.
Other documented sites
The location guide also lists cores at Federal Ration Stockpile, Fort Hagen Command Center, Greenetech Genetics, Gunners Plaza, the Institute, Malden Center, Milton parking garage, and Four Leaf Fishpacking Plant, among many other sites. Counts, exact access conditions, and the full list are detailed in the guide; check its current entries if you are planning a specific route, since the page is mutable and covers both the base game and add-ons.

Power armor routes and additional finds
Armor sites can also lead you to cores. A Steam Community guide to power-armor locations gives examples near the National Guard Training Yard, Starlight Drive-In, and Atom Cats Garage, including a core with a suit in a shipping container behind the National Guard Armory. These are community route notes, not an official guaranteed-spawn list: some armor is leveled, owned, or tied to DLC.
Beyond fixed placements, selected ammo boxes and other containers may yield cores, sometimes in groups of four. Sentry bots can also provide recoverable cores. These are variable acquisition routes, and loot can depend on character level or game state.

Buying cores and DLC locations
Some ammunition merchants sell cores. The Fallout Wiki mechanics reference says Proctor Teagan and Rowdy stock at least one per restock; other ammo merchants may carry them depending on player level. Merchant stock and restocks make this a repeatable option under the described conditions, but availability can still depend on your game state.
Additional locations require add-ons. The location guide includes two cores in Acadia in Far Harbor and multiple sites in Nuka-World, as well as Automatron additions. These are not available in a base-game-only playthrough. Use the guide’s DLC labels to distinguish add-on content from locations you can reach without those expansions.

How to choose a route
- Need one core early: Check the Museum of Freedom during “When Freedom Calls,” provided you can open the novice-locked security door/terminal. Its listed core is at 50% charge.
- Want several in one destination: Robotics Disposal Ground and ArcJet Systems each list three and two cores respectively; weigh the route and encounter risks against what you need.
- Already progressing through the Castle: Search the tunnels for their three listed cores.
- Prefer not to explore for fixed placements: Check eligible merchants’ ammunition stock and restock, or search containers and sentry bots, understanding these routes can vary by level and game state.
- Have add-ons: Include Far Harbor, Nuka-World, or Automatron locations only if the corresponding content is installed and accessible.
For the broadest current route map, consult the community-maintained Fallout Wiki location page; its entries distinguish base-game and DLC sites. The Steam guide is useful for power-armor route examples but should be read with its leveled, owned-gear, and add-on caveats in mind.
