Bethesda’s April 2024 Fallout 4 next-generation update changed the game runtime and initially broke F4SE and associated plugins. F4SE later added support for the new runtime, so the original break is not a blanket failure today: check that your installed game build, F4SE version, platform, and each native-code plugin are compatible.
What happened to F4SE?
F4SE, or Fallout 4 Script Extender, is a community modding resource that expands Fallout 4’s scripting capabilities. Its authors describe it as working without modifying the game’s executable files on disk. Many mods use F4SE, and some also depend on separate native-code plugins.

Bethesda announced the free next-generation update for April 25, 2024. On release, the game moved to runtime 1.10.980. Nexus Mods community manager Pickysaurus reported that the change would break F4SE and associated plugins. The F4SE version history later recorded support for runtime 1.10.980 in version 0.7.0.
The update changed the runtime, including compiler behavior and how functions were inlined. F4SE contributor Ianpatt, quoted in Pickysaurus’s April 25, 2024 Nexus Mods forum post, said, “It’s going to be a while. The change is of the scope of Skyrim Anniversary Edition/1.6+. The compiler was changed, inlining drastically changed existing functions, etc.” This describes the challenge at that time, not proof that F4SE remains incompatible.

Does F4SE work with the latest Fallout 4 update?
The F4SE documentation reviewed for this article lists version 0.7.9 for Fallout 4 runtime 1.11.240. Compatibility is runtime-specific: compare the runtime shown for your installed game with the runtime supported by the F4SE release you plan to use. Recheck the F4SE release information before installing, since game and tool versions can change.
An F4SE release supporting your runtime does not mean every F4SE-dependent mod is compatible. According to F4SE’s documentation, creators of native-code plugins must update those plugins for runtimes 1.10.980 and later 1.11. Check each required plugin’s own release notes and requirements.

How to check your Fallout 4 mod compatibility
- Check your game runtime. Identify the Fallout 4 version installed on your system; do not rely only on the phrase “next-gen update.”
- Match F4SE to that runtime. Consult the F4SE readme and release history for a version that explicitly supports your build.
- Check your platform. The F4SE readme lists Steam and GOG support and excludes Microsoft Store/Game Pass and Epic. Confirm the current documentation for your edition before proceeding.
- Check every native-code plugin. Verify that each plugin required by your mod list supports both your runtime and F4SE version.
- Follow the mod authors’ instructions. If a required plugin has no compatible release, avoid assuming the mod will work just because F4SE launches.
Older runtime or newer runtime: what should you choose?
Neither choice is universally best. The right option depends on the exact game build and whether the mods and plugins you need support it. The available research does not provide a comprehensive current compatibility list or a tested recommendation between these options.

What the update does—and does not—tell us
Bethesda’s April 2024 announcement described console performance and quality modes, stability improvements, increased resolutions, PC widescreen support, Creation Kit fixes, and quest updates. Bethesda’s later patch notes include further updates, including a May 27, 2026 Creation Storage Expansion Update. Those general game updates do not establish that every F4SE plugin or mod works.

The research for this article did not establish a count of affected mods or verify every mod’s current status. Treat compatibility as a check for your specific runtime and mod list, rather than assuming all mods broke or that all issues have been fixed.
