For a straightforward first-play order, start with Fallout: New Vegas, then play Fallout 4. That follows the chronology Bethesda gives for these two games, but it is a preference—not a story prerequisite. Either can be your first Fallout. Choose Fallout 4 instead if settlement building, its action-RPG presentation, or its bundled Anniversary Edition content is what you want most.
Does the story require you to play one first?
No. The order recommended here is based on release chronology, not on a requirement to understand one game before starting the other. Bethesda’s official Fallout timeline places New Vegas after Fallout 3 and identifies Fallout 4 as a 2015 release. So, between these two, playing New Vegas first is a simple chronological choice; it does not mean Fallout 4 depends on it.

Why choose Fallout: New Vegas first?
Pick New Vegas if you like following a chronology-based order or if it is simply the game that interests you more. The timeline is a useful tie-breaker, not evidence that it is objectively better or that you need to finish it to follow Fallout 4.
Before buying, check the listing for your region and platform. Bethesda’s catalog lists the game, but the available evidence does not establish current physical stock, platform coverage, or which edition and add-ons are included. Don’t assume a particular bundle from the title alone.

Why choose Fallout 4 first?
Start with Fallout 4 if hands-on construction appeals to you. Bethesda’s timeline says crafting and constructing personal settlements were introduced in the game. The PlayStation page describes its setting as Boston and the wider Commonwealth, and its combat as playable from either first- or third-person perspective with V.A.T.S.
If bundled content matters, Bethesda says Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition includes the base game, six official add-ons, and more than 150 Creation Club items. Bethesda also announced a Switch 2 release with a February 24 launch date, or February 25 in Australia; check the launch information and local store listing for current regional availability.
