To find out whether a particular horror game will run on your PC, compare the game’s current system requirements with your computer’s operating system, processor, RAM, graphics card, graphics API or VRAM requirements, and available storage. On Windows, the DirectX Diagnostic Tool (DxDiag) can help you identify your hardware. Meeting minimum requirements is not a promise of smooth play or high frame rates.
Will this horror game run on my PC?
There is no universal hardware threshold for horror games. Requirements apply to a specific game, edition, platform, and version; updates may also change them. Check the current listing for the exact release you intend to buy rather than relying on requirements for another edition or platform.
How to check compatibility before buying

Find the exact game’s current requirements
On Steam, open the game’s Store page and scroll to “System Requirements.” Steam explains that requirements are listed on each game’s Store page in its performance guidance. If buying elsewhere, use that seller’s listing or the publisher’s current requirements; don’t assume a different store’s or release’s details apply.

Check the operating system first
Compare the listed Windows version and architecture, including any 64-bit requirement. For a macOS or Linux release, check the supported version for that platform. A computer can have a capable processor and graphics card and still be incompatible if its operating system is unsupported. Steam notes that some games require 64-bit Windows in its operating-system guidance.

Compare every listed hardware requirement
Check the processor model, RAM, graphics card model, any stated VRAM or graphics API requirement, and available storage. Also look for other listed conditions, such as networking or sound requirements. Publishers may include target settings or performance alongside hardware requirements. For example, a Square Enix PC Steam requirements page shows how one game can specify operating system, CPU, RAM, GPU, DirectX version, storage, and performance details. Those specifications describe that game only, not horror games generally.

Identify the components in your PC
On Windows, open the Run dialog, type
dxdiag, and wait for the DirectX Diagnostic Tool to gather information. Select “Save All Information…” to create a report. Capcom’s Windows troubleshooting steps explain that DxDiag can show the GPU model and VRAM. Use Windows system information or your PC or component manufacturer’s documentation to confirm exact model names when needed.Rank #2

Compare minimum and recommended requirements separately
Minimum specifications and recommended specifications are different reference points; don’t treat the minimum as a promise of high frame rates or strong performance. Steam’s performance guidance makes that distinction explicitly. If your PC meets minimum but falls short of recommended, lowering graphics settings may help, but it is not guaranteed to resolve every performance or compatibility problem. Capcom likewise advises that a system below recommended specifications may need lower settings in its troubleshooting guidance.
What to watch for with laptops and integrated graphics
Compare the actual graphics hardware model, not just the laptop’s product name. Steam notes that integrated graphics are generally less powerful than dedicated graphics and may deliver lower performance. Laptop-class and dual-GPU configurations can also have additional support or configuration considerations, as Capcom notes in its troubleshooting guidance. Don’t assume a mobile GPU performs like a desktop version with a similar name.

If your PC falls short of recommended requirements
First decide whether a possible reduction in graphics settings is an acceptable compromise. If a requirement is still unmet, identify which category is short before considering an upgrade: the relevant response depends on the specific game, component, and whether an upgrade is compatible with your PC. Steam notes that graphics-card and memory upgrades can affect gameplay, but that does not establish which upgrade—if any—is right for your system. Avoid choosing a new GPU, RAM kit, or computer without matching it to the actual shortfall.

Refund terms depend on the store and can change. Steam’s policy page, last updated April 23, 2024, describes a standard offer for games and software applications purchased on Steam when a request is made within 14 days of purchase and the game has been played for less than two hours; terms and exceptions apply. Valve says it cannot refund purchases made outside Steam, such as third-party keys. Check the current Steam refund policy before relying on it, and don’t assume another seller uses the same terms.
