The update itself costs nothing, but Bethesda says console players must own Fallout 4 for the device they want to play on.
Is the Fallout 4 next-gen update free?
Yes. Bethesda released the update for free on April 25, 2024. On next-generation consoles, ownership is platform-specific: Bethesda Support says, “To download the update on a next-generation console, you must own Fallout 4 for that device.” The update is not a separate paid upgrade for an eligible owner, but owning the game on one platform does not establish eligibility to download it on another.

This applies to the update, not to every later edition or content option. Bethesda lists Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC. Its separately sold Anniversary Edition Upgrade adds six expansions and more than 150 Creation Club items for standard-edition owners; the Creations Bundle is another separate option for Game of the Year Edition owners who want Creation Club content. What changed on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S?
The update added native applications for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, along with two graphics modes. Bethesda describes the frame rates as targets and lists the following settings; they are not independent performance measurements.

These are Bethesda’s published targets, not a guarantee that every scene will hold the listed frame rate. The original details are in the April 25, 2024 patch notes.
Did PS4 and Xbox One get an update too?
Yes. The older-console update was free as well. Bethesda described stability improvements and fixes for login and quests on PS4 and Xbox One. These systems did not receive the native PS5 and Xbox Series X|S applications or the next-gen mode descriptions above. Bethesda’s April 11, 2024 announcement outlines the original platform changes.
What did the PC update add?
Bethesda announced widescreen and ultrawide support, plus stability, mod and bug fixes for PC players on Steam, the Microsoft Store and GOG. The patch notes also list Steam Deck Verified. GOG’s absence from the announcement’s initial availability is a historical detail from April 2024, not a statement of current availability.
What free content came with the update?
The update included nine free Creation Club items. Named additions included Enclave Remnants, the Makeshift Weapon Pack and Halloween Workshop, along with several items released previously. Bethesda’s patch notes list the update’s content and fixes.

Has Fallout 4 changed since the 2024 update?
Yes. Bethesda’s patch history includes later changes, so the April 2024 feature list is not the full account of the game’s current state. Two later updates affect Creations storage and modding:
Creations storage changes in May 2026
In notes dated May 27, 2026, Bethesda described these storage limits: Xbox One up to 15 GB; Xbox Series X|S growable up to 100 GB; PS5 approximately 15 GB; and PS4 approximately 16 GB. Bethesda cautions that PS4 download size and installed size can differ, that usage may appear larger than expected, and that the storage partition can limit how many large Creations fit at once. After this update, Xbox players’ installed Creations were cleared on first launch and had to be restored or downloaded again; PS5 Creations were preserved.

Other changes in August 2026
Bethesda’s August 18, 2026 notes raised the BA2 archive limit from 256 to 1024, added Creation Kit capabilities and included fixes such as one for a Steam Deck virtual-keyboard crash. The full entries are in Bethesda’s Fallout 4 patch notes.
