Xbox made the game available to all players from January 29 through February 1, 2026, and kept it unlocked through February 5. No Game Pass membership was required for that promotion. The offer does not grant a permanent copy, and the dates do not establish that Fallout 76 is free now.
What the Xbox Fallout 76 offer included
Xbox Marketing Manager Kyle Ocean announced the event as part of Free Play Days. The all-player trial ran January 29–February 1, 2026, with Fallout 76 remaining unlocked until February 5. Xbox said a Game Pass membership was not needed. The announcement is available on Xbox Wire.

This was a time-limited chance to play, not a permanent license. Xbox described Fallout 76 as a game players could purchase after the event; the announcement did not say that trial participation added the game to an account to keep.
Can you get Fallout 76 free right now?
Not through the January 2026 Xbox event: it ended February 5, 2026. A previous Xbox free-play window ran December 16–23, 2025, and also expired. Bethesda’s anniversary free-play week ran October 23–30, 2023, on Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation. None of these dated promotions confirms an active offer on October 8, 2026.

Bethesda Support directs players to download Fallout 76 from the chosen platform’s store while a free-play event is active. Its event guidance is at Bethesda Support. For a new offer, check the relevant platform’s official store or event announcement for dates, eligibility, and any subscription requirement before attempting to install.
How Xbox told players to join the January event
These were Xbox’s instructions for the now-expired promotion; they will not unlock the game outside an active event.

- On the web: Find Fallout 76 on Xbox.com, sign in, and proceed to the Microsoft Store installation option.
- On Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S: Open the Xbox Store, go to the Subscriptions tab, and find the Free Play Days collection. Select Fallout 76 while the event is live.
Xbox noted that post-event purchase discounts and availability could vary by game and region. Its January announcement did not establish a discount available to every player.

Bethesda’s general support guidance describes platform-specific steps for active free-play events. These are not proof that a trial is currently running, and the exact requirements of a dated promotion take precedence over generic instructions.

- Xbox: Bethesda’s general page says to ensure an Xbox Game Pass membership, sign in on the Microsoft Fallout 76 page, and select “Install on my devices.” That guidance may not match every promotion: Xbox explicitly said its January 2026 all-player event required no Game Pass membership.
- PlayStation: Bethesda’s general page says an active PlayStation Plus membership is required; choose “Free Trial,” then “Add to Library,” when that option is available.
Bethesda says saved data carries over if you buy the full game after a free trial week. That makes a trial a way to try the game before purchasing, but it does not turn the trial into a permanent free copy.
