The verified scores do show how several entries compare, but they mix platform-specific and all-platform results, and scores and review counts are missing for Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. The list below therefore reports the verified results without inventing a definitive franchise order.
What counts as a Fallout game in this ranking?
This comparison includes the named standalone games for which the available Metacritic evidence provides a critic score and review count: the original role-playing games, tactical and action spin-offs, and the later mainline entries. It does not include mobile releases, expansions, or separately listed online expansions such as Fallout 76: Wastelanders. Including those releases would require their own verified score evidence and a broader list scope.
Metascores aggregate critics’ reviews; they are not individual reviews or audience user scores. Because some Metacritic pages report results by platform, each entry below identifies the platform or scope attached to its score. Figures are the reported values retrieved for this comparison; no retrieval date is available in the cited score evidence.

Scores and counts are attributed to Metacritic: Fallout (Metacritic), Fallout 2 (Metacritic), Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel (Metacritic), Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel (Metacritic), Fallout 4 (Metacritic), and Fallout 76 (Metacritic). Metacritic classifies Fallout and Fallout 2 as Generally Favorable. The available score evidence does not establish consistent platform labels for those two records.

What the scores can—and cannot—rank
Within the reported figures
Among the entries with verified scores, the highest displayed score is Fallout at 89/100, followed by Fallout 4 at 87/100 and Fallout 2 at 86/100. That ordering describes the displayed numbers, not a platform-normalized verdict: Fallout 4 is reported across all platforms, while the exact platform scope for the original games is not stated in the available score records. The two Brotherhood of Steel scores also demonstrate why platform labels matter: its Xbox and PlayStation 2 results differ.
Missing entries prevent an all-games order
The available Metacritic material for Fallout 3 does not expose a score or critic count, and the surfaced Fallout: New Vegas excerpt likewise does not provide either figure. They cannot responsibly be placed above or below the scored games here. The Fallout 76 page reports additional platform results of 53 and 49, alongside the PC score of 52; this comparison uses only the explicitly identified PC result, not an unlabeled franchise-wide score.

Scores do not measure the same kind of game
Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel shifts from story-led role-playing toward squad-based tactical combat, while Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel is an action-oriented spin-off. Metascore order alone therefore cannot say which game best suits someone looking for a particular style of play. It measures aggregated critic reception, not whether a tactical, action, classic, or online Fallout is the right fit for a given player.

How to read Metacritic’s ranking fairly
- Compare critic Metascores only with critic Metascores; do not substitute user scores.
- Keep platform and score scope attached to each number. A platform-specific result is not automatically a series-wide score.
- Read review counts alongside scores. A score aggregates a particular set of critic reviews, and counts differ between entries.
- Treat close scores as close displayed results, not proof that one game is meaningfully better for every player.
- Keep spin-offs distinct from mainline RPGs when deciding what “best Fallout” means.
