Fallout: New Vegas DLC Order: What to Play Before the Final Mission

For a first playthrough, play the story expansions in this order: Dead Money → Honest Hearts → Old World Blues → Lonesome Road. Begin the DLC arc at about level 20 or higher, finish it before starting the final Hoover Dam operation, and keep a save from before the endgame. Honest Hearts is the one flexible exception: it is relatively self-contained and can be moved earlier, but Lonesome Road should normally remain last.

The recommended Fallout: New Vegas DLC order

The release-order sequence gives the connected expansion storyline its clearest buildup while keeping the final Courier/Ulysses thread until the end:

Order DLC Why it belongs here Quest signal listed in the official Ultimate Edition manual
1 Dead Money Introduces the Sierra Madre storyline, themes and characters that later expansions reference. “Sierra Madre Grand Opening!”
2 Honest Hearts Provides a comparatively self-contained journey and a gentler transition before the more reference-heavy expansions. “Happy Trails Expedition”
3 Old World Blues Its setting and dialogue land better after Dead Money has established more context for the wider DLC arc. “Midnight Science-Fiction Feature!”
4 Lonesome Road Serves as the final major DLC and the culmination of the Courier/Ulysses storyline. “The Reunion”

This is a recommendation for a first run, not a mandatory sequence. The expansions can be entered in different orders, but changing the order changes how many references, character connections and revelations have their intended context.

Why release order works best on a first playthrough

These four campaigns are not one continuous quest, yet they form a loose narrative arc. Dead Money establishes ideas and personalities that echo elsewhere. Honest Hearts can stand on its own, which is why it is the safest expansion to move if you have a particular role-playing reason to visit it early. Old World Blues rewards players who remember earlier DLC material, so placing it after Dead Money avoids making those references feel unearned. Lonesome Road is designed as a final journey rather than an introduction.

#1 Best Overall
Fallout: New Vegas - Xbox 360 Ultimate Edition
  • Beyond the Wasteland: The world of New Vegas is more expansive than ever. Each new distinct area presents a fresh set of branching-quests, remarkable personalities and more chances to play the Savior or the Pariah to the natives of New Vegas.
  • Dead Money: Lured into a trap masquerading as the Sierra Madre Casino, you are thrown into a high stakes game where you'll have to work with three other lost souls if you want to survive.
  • Honest Hearts: An expedition into Utah's Zion National Park goes horribly wrong and you become embroiled in a war between tribes and put into a conflict between a New Canaanite missionary and the mysterious Burning Man.
  • Old World Blues: Transported to the Big MT research crater, you are enlisted by the Think Tank to save them from their own science experiments that have gone horribly out of control.
  • Lonesome Road: Ulysses, the original Courier Six, contacts you and promises to answer why he refused to deliver the Platinum Chip at the start of Fallout: New Vegas, but only if you make one last journey into the treacherous canyons of the Divide.

Bethesda’s description captures that intended position: “Make one last journey into the hurricane-swept canyons of the Divide to find answers.” Treat that wording as a structural clue. Lonesome Road is the road toward the end of the DLC arc, not the place to begin it.

1. Dead Money: start the connected DLC arc here

What this placement accomplishes

Dead Money is the best opening chapter when you want the expansions to feel like a deliberate sequence. Its Sierra Madre setting, cast and themes establish references that later stories build on. Starting here also means you encounter the earliest major DLC material before Old World Blues and Lonesome Road assume you have broader context.

When to enter

The practical starting point for the DLC arc is around level 20 or higher. That guideline comes from PC Gamer and is not a universal requirement: your build, difficulty setting, equipment choices and experience with the game can make the campaign easier or harder. A carefully specialized character may manage it earlier, while a new player on a higher difficulty may prefer additional levels.

What to prepare

  • Make a manual save immediately before activating the DLC signal so you can return to the Mojave if you decide the timing is wrong.
  • Finish urgent Mojave errands first if you do not want them waiting while you are away from the main map.
  • Bring a character build you understand rather than relying on a last-minute respec or unfamiliar weapon style; the campaign tests different skills than a typical Mojave detour.

The purpose of the save is control, not fear. You can commit to the story while retaining an uncomplicated route back to your main campaign.

2. Honest Hearts: the flexible second stop

Why it usually follows Dead Money

Honest Hearts is comparatively self-contained, so it does not need the same amount of prior DLC context. Placing it second preserves release order and gives your character a change of setting before Old World Blues, while avoiding the risk of encountering later references too early.

When moving it earlier makes sense

You can play Honest Hearts before Dead Money if you want an earlier, more self-contained expedition or if its themes fit your role-playing plan. That change causes less narrative damage than moving Old World Blues or Lonesome Road ahead of their intended positions. The official manual identifies its entry signal as “Happy Trails Expedition,” which lets you recognize the correct start when it appears in your quest log.

How to decide

  • Choose second if this is your first run and you want the cleanest release-order progression.
  • Choose it first only when you specifically want its independent story before committing to the Sierra Madre arc.
  • Do not use it as a reason to delay the entire DLC plan; it is the flexible component, not a replacement for the later expansions.

3. Old World Blues: play after Dead Money

Why context matters

Old World Blues is the third stop in the recommended path because its dialogue and setting contain references that are more rewarding once Dead Money has supplied additional context. Playing it immediately after Honest Hearts preserves the release-order rhythm and places it before the final Lonesome Road journey.

Finding the start

The official manual lists “Midnight Science-Fiction Feature!” as the starting signal. When that signal appears, verify that you are ready to remain focused on the expansion for a while rather than triggering it in the middle of a time-sensitive Mojave objective.

Practical sequencing tip

Keep a separate save before entering. This gives you a clean branch for the base-game storyline and another branch for completing the remaining DLC in sequence. It is especially useful if you want to experiment with dialogue or skill checks without permanently changing your primary character’s progression.

4. Lonesome Road: reserve it for last

Why it is the finale

Lonesome Road is the final major story DLC and the natural last road before Fallout: New Vegas reaches its main-game ending. Its central Courier/Ulysses thread functions as a culmination, so playing it earlier can expose information and framing that later content assumes you have not yet resolved.

The start signal and official description

The Ultimate Edition manual calls its entry signal “The Reunion.” Bethesda’s product description presents the expansion as one last journey into the Divide, reinforcing its role as a finale rather than an optional prologue.

How close to the main ending?

Play Lonesome Road after the other three expansions but before you launch the final Hoover Dam operation. You can complete other Mojave quests afterward, so there is no need to trigger the endgame immediately when Lonesome Road ends. The important distinction is between finishing the DLC arc and committing to the battle that closes the main campaign.

Level, difficulty and character preparation

Level 20 or higher is a practical starting point for the DLC arc, not a gate enforced by the game. The right level depends on several variables:

  • Build: A character with strong combat skills may have an easier time than a broadly distributed build at the same level.
  • Difficulty: Higher settings increase the margin for error; lower settings can make an earlier start comfortable.
  • Player familiarity: Players who know New Vegas systems, enemy behavior and resource management can start sooner than newcomers.
  • Order: Taking Dead Money first means you meet its demands before later DLC rewards and equipment have accumulated.

Before each expansion, repair or replace essential gear, carry healing and ammunition appropriate to your build, and spend uncommitted skill points only after checking which kind of challenge you want to handle. Do not assume that a level number alone guarantees an easy run.

When to stop the main quest for DLC

The safest timing

Complete all four expansions before beginning the final Hoover Dam operation. The battle is the main campaign’s closing commitment, so entering it first can leave you without a normal opportunity to continue your character’s exploration in the same way afterward.

Use a pre-endgame save

  1. Finish your desired Mojave side quests and companions’ storylines.
  2. Create a manual save before accepting or launching the final Hoover Dam operation.
  3. From that save, complete the DLC sequence: Dead Money, Honest Hearts, Old World Blues and Lonesome Road.
  4. Return to the pre-endgame save when you are ready to complete the main story.

This approach preserves a completion-state file while keeping a separate version of the Courier available for exploration, alternate choices and DLC replays.

Can you play the DLC after beating Hoover Dam?

For planning purposes, treat the answer as no. The final Hoover Dam operation leads directly into the game’s ending, so it is not a reliable point from which to resume ordinary Mojave exploration and begin every expansion afterward. If you have already reached that point, load a save from before the operation. If no such save exists, you may need to start a new playthrough or use an earlier backup to experience the DLC in sequence.

Alternative orders and their trade-offs

Approach Narrative continuity Difficulty progression Spoiler risk When to choose it
Dead Money → Honest Hearts → Old World Blues → Lonesome Road Strongest overall buildup. Balanced practical progression for a first run. Lowest risk of premature DLC revelations. Recommended for a first playthrough.
Honest Hearts → Dead Money → Old World Blues → Lonesome Road Mostly preserved; the self-contained expansion moves earlier. Can provide an earlier detour before the Sierra Madre campaign. Still keeps the major finale last. Useful when you specifically want Honest Hearts first.
Any order ending with Lonesome Road Preserves the final Courier/Ulysses chapter. May feel uneven depending on which expansion you enter at a lower level. Higher chance that references arrive before their context. Suitable for repeat runs or role-playing experiments.
Lonesome Road before the other expansions Weakest buildup. Can be demanding without the intended progression. Highest risk of seeing culmination material early. Only if you deliberately prioritize that story over continuity.

Do you need the Ultimate Edition?

No single edition is required to follow the order, but the Ultimate Edition is the simplest one-purchase route when you want the complete expansion set. Bethesda’s 2025 anniversary announcement states that it includes the base game plus Dead Money, Honest Hearts, Old World Blues and Lonesome Road.

If you own the base game already, you can instead obtain the expansions through separate licenses where your platform offers them. Availability, pricing and platform packaging vary by region and storefront, so verify the current listing before buying. The key content check is that all four story DLC names appear in the package; owning only one or two will not provide the complete sequence.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Starting too early because the signal appears

A radio or quest signal is an invitation, not proof that your character is ready. Use the level-20 guideline as a practical baseline and make a manual save before entering.

Putting Lonesome Road in the middle

Doing so can reveal the DLC arc’s culminating material before the earlier expansions have established their context. Keep it for the final DLC slot on a first run.

Assuming Honest Hearts must be first

Its self-contained design makes an early visit viable, but the release-order recommendation still places it second. Move it only for a deliberate role-playing or pacing reason.

Launching Hoover Dam without a backup

Create the pre-endgame save before committing. Without it, returning to the DLC sequence may require an older save or a new character.

Buying an incomplete bundle

Check for all four story expansions by name. The base game alone, or a package containing only selected add-ons, cannot deliver the complete recommended arc.
