Fallout: New Vegas RTX Remix system requirements and GPU performance guide (2026)

Short answer: RTX Remix lists “Any RTX GPU” as its minimum gamer-GPU tier, but that is a launch requirement, not a guaranteed frame-rate target for Fallout: New Vegas. For a sensible starting point, use NVIDIA’s recommended RTX Remix platform: Windows 11, a Core i7-13700K or Ryzen 7 7700X, 32 GB of memory, a GeForce RTX 4070 with 12 GB of VRAM, and 10 GB of NVMe space. No reproducible New Vegas RTX Remix benchmark currently establishes fixed FPS figures for particular cards, so choose hardware by resolution, asset density and frame-time headroom rather than by an advertised average.

Official RTX Remix requirements, separated from the original game

Fallout: New Vegas was designed for much older PC hardware. Its original support requirements describe whether the unmodified game can start; they do not account for path tracing, replacement textures, modern lighting, neural reconstruction or the extra CPU work introduced by an RTX Remix runtime. Using the legacy requirement as a buying guide for the remastering project will understate what the workload can demand.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

NVIDIA’s RTX Remix Technical Requirements page, accessed in 2026, uses a broad minimum GPU statement and a much more specific recommended configuration. The recommendation is the useful planning baseline for a heavily modded New Vegas installation.

Item NVIDIA RTX Remix minimum wording NVIDIA recommended configuration What it means for New Vegas RTX Remix
Graphics card “Any RTX GPU” GeForce RTX 4070 The minimum identifies RTX hardware support, not a target resolution or fixed FPS. The 4070 is the named reference point for comfortable headroom.
VRAM Not stated as a universal minimum 12 GB Replacement textures, geometry and higher output resolutions can consume substantially more memory than the original game.
Processor Not stated in the cited minimum line Intel Core i7-13700K or AMD Ryzen 7 7700X CPU-side mod processing and the game’s simulation can limit frame time even when the GPU has capacity.
System memory Not stated in the cited minimum line 32 GB RAM Leaves room for the game, the Remix runtime, texture data and background applications.
Operating system Not stated in the cited minimum line Windows 11 Use the supported Windows environment before diagnosing a renderer problem as a GPU fault.
Storage Not stated in the cited minimum line 10 GB of NVMe SSD space This is NVIDIA’s stated Remix space allowance; replacement assets and mod archives can require additional room.

The quoted “Any RTX GPU” line should therefore be read as a compatibility floor. It does not say that every RTX card will sustain a particular refresh rate, that 4K will be practical, or that a project-specific build will behave identically to another Remix title.

What the Remix runtime is doing to the game

Why DirectX 8 and 9 support matters

RTX Remix is designed primarily for DirectX 8 and DirectX 9 games that use fixed-function rendering pipelines. New Vegas belongs to that legacy DirectX era, which is why a bridge and runtime can intercept the original draw calls and provide a modern rendering path. Compatibility is not automatic: unusual rendering techniques can still produce crashes, missing effects or unexpected geometry.

Raster content with a modern lighting path

The Fallout project description presents New Vegas running through RTX Remix while retaining the game’s original raster graphics. The runtime changes how those graphics are rendered; it does not turn every original asset into a physically authored, high-detail replacement. A scene with modest textures can be easy to render, while a scene filled with dense replacement assets, translucent effects and long visibility ranges can be much heavier.

Where the runtime files go

The RTX Remix runtime guide places the runtime files beside the game executable. The Remix in-game interface then exposes setup and performance controls. Keep the exact runtime and project build together: swapping DLLs or copying files from a different release can create failures that look like driver problems.

GPU tiers: what each class can and cannot tell you

The table below is a planning framework, not a benchmark. The available sources do not provide controlled New Vegas RTX Remix averages or 1% lows for these cards. Actual results depend on the project build, driver, scene, resolution, replacement assets, path-tracing quality and CPU workload.

GPU class Typical use in this project VRAM considerations Headroom expectation
Older RTX entry tier, such as an RTX 2060 Testing whether the runtime launches and evaluating reduced settings or lower output resolutions. Capacity varies by model; monitor allocation rather than assuming the recommended allowance. Limited. Heavy replacement packs, high ray-tracing quality or high refresh targets may require compromises.
RTX 3060 class A plausible minimum-class card for experimentation. An RTX 3060 can satisfy the “any RTX” wording on paper, but that wording is not a New Vegas performance guarantee. The 12 GB version has more asset headroom than an 8 GB card; neither has a published project-specific FPS result here. Moderate at conservative settings; leave room for scene-to-scene variation and shader compilation.
RTX 3070 class A step above the minimum for players willing to tune quality and resolution. Check the installed model’s capacity before enabling large texture packs. Better raster and ray-tracing throughput than entry RTX parts, but VRAM can still be the limiter in mod-heavy scenes.
GeForce RTX 4070, 12 GB NVIDIA’s recommended reference configuration and the most defensible baseline for a new build. Matches the stated 12 GB recommendation. Balanced starting point for high-quality experimentation; it still is not a guaranteed 4K or high-refresh result.
RTX 4080 or RTX 4090 class Useful when targeting higher resolutions, heavier replacement assets or more consistent frame times. Additional memory can reduce texture-streaming pressure, but it cannot correct a CPU bottleneck or a conflicting DLL. More GPU headroom, not immunity from project bugs, shader stutter or engine-side limits.

Can an RTX 3060 run Fallout: New Vegas RTX Remix?

It can be a reasonable card for trying the project because NVIDIA’s minimum statement is “Any RTX GPU.” That answer is about entering the supported hardware class, not about a guaranteed result. A 12 GB RTX 3060 gives texture allocation more breathing room than an 8 GB model, while the lower rendering throughput may still require a lower output resolution, reduced path-tracing quality or an upscaling mode.

Before buying specifically for New Vegas, verify the exact project release and test a representative interior and exterior save. A card that appears smooth in a small room can become inconsistent in a city cell with distant geometry, weather, transparencies and numerous replacement materials. Record GPU utilization, VRAM allocation and frame-time graphs rather than relying on the counter in one location.

How much VRAM does the mod use?

There is no single, published VRAM figure for Fallout: New Vegas RTX Remix. Usage changes with texture resolution, replacement-mesh density, render resolution, shadow and path-tracing settings, the number of loaded cells and the driver’s allocation policy. NVIDIA’s recommended configuration specifies 12 GB, which is the clearest capacity target available, not a measured peak for this project.

Signs that VRAM, rather than raw shader speed, is the limit

  • Frame time worsens when turning toward a texture-heavy area and recovers after looking away.
  • Textures appear late, surfaces fall back to lower detail or the application reports an out-of-memory error.
  • Lowering texture quality or output resolution helps more than lowering geometric or lighting settings.
  • System RAM or disk activity rises as the driver moves resources out of dedicated video memory.

Reduce texture resolution and the number of simultaneous replacement packs first. If the problem remains at modest settings, investigate a runtime or mod conflict instead of assuming that a larger GPU will solve it.

Resolution and quality planning

Resolution multiplies the number of pixels that the path-traced renderer must shade. Neural reconstruction or another upscaling mode can reduce the internal render cost, but its quality and performance depend on the exact Remix build and settings. Treat every mode as a setting to measure, not as a universal FPS multiplier.

Target What to prioritize Likely trade-offs Evidence status
1080p display Moderate path-tracing quality, sensible texture sizes and a stable frame-time target. You may become CPU-limited in simpler scenes; raising image quality can shift the bottleneck back to the GPU. No published New Vegas FPS table.
1440p display The RTX 4070/12 GB recommendation, careful asset selection and an upscaling mode if available in the project build. Higher pixel count exposes shader and VRAM pressure; dense scenes may need lower ray-tracing quality. No published New Vegas FPS table.
4K display More GPU and memory headroom, conservative replacement assets and a measured reconstruction mode. Native rendering can be substantially heavier; a high refresh-rate target is not established by the requirements page. No published New Vegas FPS table.

Path tracing and neural features

Path-tracing quality, ray reconstruction and other neural features can change both frame time and image character. Enable one change at a time, capture the same route and compare the frame-time graph. A visually cleaner mode is not automatically faster, and a higher nominal FPS can still feel uneven if shader compilation or CPU stalls dominate.

CPU, RAM and storage requirements

CPU overhead

The recommended Core i7-13700K and Ryzen 7 7700X are platform guidance for RTX Remix, not a Fallout-specific benchmark pairing. The original game’s simulation, draw-call submission, script-heavy areas and mod managers can consume CPU time independently of ray tracing. If GPU utilization is low while one or more CPU threads are saturated, lowering resolution will not fix the limit.

System memory

Use 32 GB as the practical target named by NVIDIA. Large texture archives, browser tabs, recording software and mod tools can all compete with the game. If Windows begins paging, close background applications and check committed memory before changing graphics settings.

NVMe space

NVIDIA lists 10 GB of NVMe space for its recommended RTX Remix configuration. Reserve additional capacity for the base game, backups, mod archives, shader caches and replacement assets. Installing on a nearly full drive can also make cache creation and updates unreliable.

Installation and compatibility checklist

  1. Install and update the supported Fallout: New Vegas build, then make a clean backup of the game directory and save files.
  2. Obtain the exact New Vegas RTX Remix project release and its matching runtime. Do not mix DLLs or configuration files from another build.
  3. Place the runtime files beside the game executable as described in the RTX Remix runtime guide.
  4. Launch once with the project’s documented bridge and verify that the Remix interface appears in game.
  5. Confirm that the original scene renders before adding replacement textures, meshes or post-processing packages.
  6. Add asset packs in small groups, restarting between changes so a crash can be attributed to one addition.
  7. Set a known output resolution and image-quality mode, then save a repeatable route for performance testing.

ENB, ReShade and other d3d9.dll tools

A current community release discussion reports incompatibility with other d3d9.dll renderers and tools, including ENB and ReShade. Treat that as a project-specific observation, not a guarantee for every future release. RTX Remix and another renderer may both need to intercept the same DirectX calls, so loading both can prevent startup or produce a black screen.

For a clean diagnosis, remove or rename the competing d3d9.dll and its associated files, launch the unmodified Remix setup, and add post-processing only if the project documentation explicitly supports it. Keep a record of every DLL in the executable directory; “fixes” copied from a different New Vegas mod list can silently replace the Remix bridge.

How to measure performance without misleading yourself

Because no controlled, reproducible Fallout: New Vegas RTX Remix benchmark table is established, your own test should identify the conditions that produced each result. An average FPS number without those conditions is not useful for comparing cards.

  1. Write down the GPU model and VRAM, CPU, system memory, Windows version, graphics driver and exact Remix/project build.
  2. Record output resolution, internal resolution or upscaling mode, path-tracing quality, ray-reconstruction setting, texture pack and other visual options.
  3. Use the same save and the same route through an exterior cell, an interior and a visually busy location.
  4. Allow shaders to compile and caches to settle before capturing a run; record whether traversal stutter occurred.
  5. Capture average frame rate together with frame-time consistency, GPU utilization, VRAM allocation and the busiest interval.
  6. Repeat after changing one setting. If two settings change together, you cannot tell which one affected the result.

Report the result as a measured run with its date and build, never as the universal performance of an RTX 3060, 4070, 4080 or 4090. Driver updates, runtime revisions and asset packs can invalidate an older comparison.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The game does not start

  • Confirm that the runtime files are beside the correct game executable.
  • Remove other d3d9.dll renderers, ENB, ReShade and injector files, then test the clean Remix installation.
  • Check that the project’s bridge, runtime and game build match.
  • Review the runtime log for a missing dependency or an unsupported rendering technique before changing GPU settings.

Black screen or missing surfaces

  • Disable newly added replacement assets and restore the last known-good configuration.
  • Test without post-processing injectors.
  • Lower path-tracing and material features to determine whether one rendering technique is triggering the issue.
  • Try the project’s documented compatibility settings; do not substitute settings from another Remix title.

Stutter after entering a new area

  • Distinguish shader compilation from sustained GPU overload by repeating the same route after the cache is populated.
  • Watch frame-time graphs and disk activity, not only average FPS.
  • Reduce texture-streaming pressure and close memory-heavy background applications.
  • If GPU utilization is low, investigate CPU-side mod load and script-heavy areas.

VRAM warnings or texture pop-in

  • Lower replacement-texture resolution or remove the largest asset pack.
  • Reduce output resolution or use the project’s supported reconstruction mode.
  • Restart after changing assets so old allocations are released.
  • Check whether the installed card has the capacity you assumed; model names do not guarantee identical VRAM.

A practical buying decision

If you already own an RTX card, start by testing the project rather than purchasing on the basis of an unverified FPS claim. An RTX 3060-class card can be a sensible experimental platform, especially in a 12 GB configuration, but expect to tune settings and resolution. For a new system intended to run a broad range of Remix projects with fewer compromises, NVIDIA’s named RTX 4070/12 GB recommendation is the clearest baseline. Move to a higher tier when your priority is 4K, very dense replacement assets or steadier frame times—not because the requirements page promises a specific frame rate.

Keep the original game requirements, RTX Remix requirements and project-specific compatibility notes separate. That distinction prevents the most common mistake: treating a legacy game that launches on old hardware as proof that a path-traced, asset-heavy runtime will perform well on it.
